‘The Talk’ Wins First Daytime Emmy Award: ‘It Was Our Time’

2 May 2016 6:41 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Mario Lopez, Larry King, Kevin Frazier, Nancy O’Dell and other stars and creators of daytime television packed the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites for the 43rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

The room was full of applause as CBS’s “The Talk” won its first Daytime Emmy in six years, beating the prevailing champion, Ellen DeGeneres, and others in the daytime yak pack.

Cast members of “The Talk” told Variety that they were shocked when the winner was announced. “I don’t know if it was something that happened this season that made it a standout, but we’ve been on for six seasons now and it was our time,” said Julie Chen, co-host of “The Talk.” “In daytime TV, viewing habits shift and it takes a while to become a household name and I think we have accomplished that.”

CBS was a big winner last night, nabbing the outstanding »

New details from the female 'Ghostbusters' reboot; don't worry men, the original still exists

29 April 2016 11:38 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Director Paul Feig, writer Katie Dippold, and the cast of the new Ghostbusters have a lot to say about your weird critiques of the film. New set visits reveal they focused on friendship and being funny. From being unhappy that Feig cast funny women as Ghostbusters in the first place, to saying nasty things about a charity event, and being pissed off about how the male character of the film is portrayed, some Ghostbusters "fans" are being pretty ridiculous. But don't worry, the folks involved in Ghostbusters know exactly what they're doing and are really happy about it. From a set visit IGN.com reports: “Everyone thinks that when we said ‘female Ghostbusters’ it was going to be a ‘chick flick’ version of Ghostbusters. It’s so crazy, people are like ‘Oh, they’re going to trip in their high heels!’ Like, what do you think we’re trying to do here? »

‘Entertainment Tonight’ Adds Rick Joyce as Co-Executive Producer

12 April 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Rick Joyce has joined “Entertainment Tonight” as co-executive producer, Variety has learned exclusively. He will work alongside “Et” executive producer Brad Bessey.

The new post marks a return to the entertainment news show for Joyce, who worked on “Entertainment Tonight” for a decade with positions including news director and managing editor.

Most recently, Joyce has been the exec producer of “The List,” a lifestyle news magazine that airs on 15 Scripps stations in major markets. Serving as the Ep for four years, he developed and launched the series in 2012. In 2006, he developed and launched the digital platform CelebTV.com as exec producer for parent company Intersport in Chicago.

Rick Joyce was one of the first people I called when I became executive producer of ‘Et.’ We have a shorthand, a shared history and I respect him as a leader and an innovator.  Bringing Rick on board as co-executive producer is an »

Food Network Star Returns For 12th Season With Comeback Kitchen – Meet The Contestants

1 April 2016 12:39 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Food Network Star has managed a place in the upper tier of reality competition programs, but it is somewhat unique insofar as it doesn’t really seem to have any legitimate record when it comes to meeting its alleged goal. It certainly rocketed out of the gates, and has had some notable winners, but after 11 seasons, and several shifts in format (like who chooses the winner), Food Network Star certainly draws its own audience, but it doesn’t exactly find stars… or at least, Stars.

Quick, name the last three winners and the shows they were given on the network. Good luck.

Quite honestly, the main flaw seems to be in letting people progress deeper and deeper into the competition without any idea what their show is going to be. Sure, they’re cooking, and they are, for the most part, doing pretty well with their screen challenges, but then »

PaleyFest Kicks Off with ‘Empire’ & Cast Clears Up Rumors of Trai Byers Leaving Show

11 March 2016 9:54 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Empire” is the number one show on broadcast television, but the hip-hop hit declined in ratings during its second season, after breaking records in its debut season, hitting an all-time overnight high of nearly 18 million viewers. Many fans and critics attributed the lower numbers to some outlandish storylines, such as digging up a dead body. When the drama returns with the back-half of its second season on March 30, co-creator Lee Daniels promises “Empire” goes back to its roots.

“What happened is that it was growing pains,” Daniels said Friday night at PaleyFest, held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, admitting that the show went a bit to the “left.” He added, “I think it would have happened to any show, and though we still remained number one, we were learning … I think it’s just a process. It’s trial and error. At the end of the day, well, we came back. »

‘Mean’ Joe Greene Reunites With Kid From Classic Super Bowl Ad, Brings Tears of Pure Coca-Cola to Your Eyes

29 January 2016 6:59 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

If you're like most Americans, the Venn diagram of sports, ads, foods you were forbidden to eat as a child, and your deepest emotions are pretty much just one circle. If that sounds familiar, then CBS has a real treat for you, both in the "food" sense and in the "tearing up at a commercial" sense! Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier reunited former Pittsburgh Steeler "Mean" Joe Greene with Tommy Okon, the little boy from Coke's classic 1980 Super Bowl spot, to have a casual chat and also invoke a sense of penetrating nostalgia in anyone who has ever dreamed of meeting or even having a hero. The segment is part of CBS's Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials 2016 special airing February 2. If they have the puppy and that horse from that Budweiser ad, then be prepared to sob like the child you once were into your name-brand snacks. »
