The Music Behind The Pictures

15 May 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Based on the novel by Anthony McCarten (who also penned the film adaptation), Death of a Superhero follows Donald (played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster), a teen who is losing his battle with cancer, during the final weeks of his life. Donald is encouraged by his doctor (Andy Serkis) to find solace in art, and his drawings, which contain angry and graphic images of violence and death, help the audience to understand the inner workings of his mind. These are uncharted waters for director Ian Fitzgibbon, who decided to enlist the services of visual effects magician Alessandro Cioffi and Trixter, a German animation company, to make his vision come alive. They are able to create a rough and wild artistic style for Donald that would undoubtedly be the work of a teenager with a vibrant imagination and raw talent. While highly stylized drawings serve as the visual centerpieces of Death Of »

In Theaters: 'The Avengers' Is 'A Little Bit Of Heaven'; Have It 'My Way' At 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel'

Well, people, it’s here. Each year, starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the early weeks of summer, we find ourselves knee-deep in a period marked by the release of monstrously large popcorn flicks, movies that show off stars and special effects while raking in the dough. That’s right: it’s the season of the terminal illness drama-comedy. Oh, wait – just kidding. It’s Summer Blockbuster Season! And we’re off to a great start with Marvel’s superhero team up this weekend. Buckle up.

Let’s just get right to it. “The Avengers,” from writer-director Joss Whedon, unites almost every superhero under the Marvel banner in a fight against time and evil, in this weekend’s biggest movie (by far). Whedon, only several weeks out of receiving critical acclaim for his penning of “The Cabin in the Woods,” has created another masterpiece here. Witty, technically brilliant, plausible (grain of salt, »

Tribeca 2012 Review: Death Of A Superhero

29 April 2012 5:13 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

With Death Of A Superhero, all the elements are there for a great movie. In fact, all the elements are there for several great movies and that may be the problem. Donald is an angsty high-schooler with terminal cancer who acts out his frustrations by drawing comic book art. This artwork tells the story of a superhero being tortured by a man with a Freddy Krueger / hypodermic needle type hand. He also sometimes sees his characters in the real world, which is when the audience is treated to brief animated segments. Donald starts seeing a shrink after he gets in trouble with the police for graffiti. Over the course of the film he also falls for the new girl at school, deals with family issues and has friends concerned with the fact that he may die a virgin. If that last one seems a little out of place, it’s because it sort of is. »

Tribeca 2012: ‘Death of a Superhero’ earnest, charming and well-acted

Death of a Superhero

Written by Anthony McCarten

Directed by Ian Fitzgibbon

Ireland/Germany, 2011

Why is it when we see the word “death” in a movie’s title, we still hold our collective breath, cross our fingers, and hope for a happy ending, knowing upfront the story will most likely deny us that possibility?  There’s a temptation in this case to keep an emotional distance to ameliorate any inevitable heartbreak the title forecasts, and that reservation resembles in a way the same conflict experienced by the protagonist in Death of a Superhero.

Fifteen year-old Donald (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) has stopped living before he even dies. How can he find something to love about life when he knows his days are numbered, and that number is dismally low?  So he starts to exhibit risky behavior, playing chicken with oncoming trains and tempting fate on the ledge of a highway overpass.  Fearing »

The Baytown Disco Trailer

18 April 2012 2:38 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The first trailer for Barry Battles's The Baytown Disco has debuted. A release date hasn't been set yet, but you can take a look at the first footage from this comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria.

The Baytown Disco Trailer

The rousing rebel spirit of a family of Southern thugs takes off at breakneck speed in The Baytown Disco - a wickedly playful, high-velocity action-comedy in which three infamously ruthless Alabama brothers find themselves on the wrong side of crooked cops, relentless Feds, mad mobsters, road pirates, tomahawk-wielding bikers, tricky femme fatales and an unforgettable cast of characters as colorful as they are lethal when they finally try to do a single good deed.

Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton and Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria headline this wildly explosive, yet ultimately moving, tale of honor breaking out among thieves with madcap results. It all starts when »

New Trailer: The Baytown Disco

18 April 2012 2:02 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

I own up to not knowing enough about this upcoming comedy The Baytown Disco. The movie is a Southern-set affair featuring the likes of: Billy Bob Thornton, Eva Longoria, Clayne Crawford, Michael Rapaport, Daniel Cudmore, Travis Fimmel, Andre Braugher and Paul Wesley. Directed by by Barry Battles (what a name), the film is described as a ‘whip-ass Southern Extravaganza, and revolves around ‘a trio of ruthless outlaw brothers who fall into helping a damsel in distress.’

I’ve posted the full synopsis below, but what is interesting is this brand new trailer, posted by Deadline, which is our first look at the flick. It’s probably not too safe for work. There is currently no release date set for the UK.

Here’s the trailer, followed by that full synopsis:

First Trailer for The Baytown Disco Starring Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria

17 April 2012 10:31 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The first trailer has jumped online for Billy Bob Thornton-starrer, The Baytown Disco.  A self-professed "Southern-fried whip-ass extravaganza," The Baytown Disco features a trio of ruthless outlaw brothers who fall into helping a damsel in distress (Eva Longoria).  She hires them to help return her godson (Thomas Brodie Sangster), who has been kidnapped by her nefarious ex-husband, Rob (Thornton).  While I wasn't exactly sold on the synopsis and images alone, the new trailer hits all the right banjo strings (and the femme fatales certainly do not hurt).  Directed by Barry Battles, The Baytown Disco also stars Clayne Crawford, Michael Rapaport, Daniel Cudmore, Travis Fimmel, Andre Braugher and Paul Wesley. Hit the jump for the trailer and official synopsis, and to watch the original short that inspired the feature-length film. Check out the trailer and the synopsis that follows (as well as some of the lovely femme fatales: Serinda Swan, »

Ian Fitzgibbon Tackles the Death of a Superhero

16 April 2012 1:29 PM, PDT | MovieMaker.com | See recent Movie Maker news »

In Irish director Ian Fitzgibbon's Death of a Superhero, teenager Donald's creativity, active imagination and innate talent combine to make him a highly talented comic book artist. His future would be bright were it not for one thing: Donald, 15, is dying of leukemia. With a cast that includes Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Donald, a non-mocap Andy Serkis as his unconventional psychologist and Michael McElhatton and Sharon Horganas his struggling-to-cope parents, Fitzgibbon has managed to direct a film about a teen with cancer that manages to be inspiring but not melodramatic, sad and poignant but not unrelentingly grim. With his film coming out on VOD tomorrow courtesy of Tribeca Films, Fitzgibbon took the time to chat with MovieMaker about what initially drew him to the script and how he crafted his own approach to the material. »

Previewing Tribeca 2012

16 April 2012 7:59 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

This year's Tribeca Film Festival (site) opens on Wednesday with the world premiere of The Five-Year Engagement, which, like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, is directed by Nicholas Stoller, produced by Judd Apatow and stars Jason Segel, and closes on April 28 with Joss Whedon's The Avengers. In the New York Times, Stephen Holden notes that the new programming team (Frédéric Boyer, former artistic director of the Directors' Fortnight, Sundance vet Geoffrey Gilmore and Genna Terranova) have slimmed the lineup down to 90 features from 150 just two years ago: "As a result Tribeca is no longer a catchall basin for middling stray films seeking a showcase." What's more, "for the first time [the] world narrative and world documentary competitions have official opening-night films":

The opening narrative feature, Eytan Fox's Yossi, is the sequel to his gay love story, Yossi and Jagger, for which the Israeli actor Ohad Knoller won a best actor »

Movies to See Before the World Ends: Love Actually

The Mayans, the wise race of ancients who created hot cocoa, set December 21st, 2012 as the end date of their Calendar, which the intelligent and logical amongst us know signifies the day the world will end, presumably at 12:21:12am, Mountain Time. Watch: Andy Serkis & Thomas Brodie Sangster Battle Cancer Through Art in 'Death Of A Superhero'

22 March 2012 8:18 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A devil's bargain to ponder: more mo-cap-free, starring roles for Andy Serkis, but all of them in maudlin teen cancer dramas that make “50/50” seem like the underrated romp it isn't? Okay, okay, the recently released trailer for Ian Fitzgibbon-directed “Death of a Superhero” actually looks halfway interesting, but still it's a quandary to be considered.

Quite a lot of buzz has already coalesced for the film, with some positive reviews after its September Tiff premiere, and now the trailer has arrived, thanks to Movieline. Tribeca Films promptly acquired the film, which is adapted from the novel of the same name by author Anthony McCarten. 'Superhero' stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster (endearing or obnoxious as the red-headed youngster in "Love Actually"), all grown up as Donald, an Irish teen stricken with leukemia, who turns to his passion for comic books and drawing as an escape. Death Of A Superhero - Official U.S. Trailer

21 March 2012 3:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Here's the first U.S. trailer to a coming of age cancer drama called Death of a Superhero. The film stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love, Actually) as Donald, an aspiring comic book artist who is diagnosed with leukemia. The movie also Andy Serkis in a non-cgi role as Donald's therapist. Then, of course, there's the love interest in the movie, played by Aisling Loftus, who gives Donald a reason to live. The movie looks like a solid feel-good movie. Being a huge fan of art, I think it's cool that the movie incorporates the art into the story of the film with animation.

Here's the Synopsis:

Donald is a teenager with extraordinary artistic talents. His future as a graphic novel artist should be bright. As his life is consumed by fantastic daydreams, Donald soon discovers that a very real enemy is trying to kill him. With an unorthodox psychologist teaching Donald »

‘Death of a Superhero’ Trailer Featuring Andy Serkis

20 March 2012 3:02 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Yesterday it was announced that Tribeca will simultaneously premiere some films on VOD as well as during their festival. One of those features is Death of a Superhero, from director Ian Fitzgibbon, who last helmed the fun crime comedy Perrier’s Bounty with Cillain Murphy and Jim Broadbent.

We reviewed his latest, which stars Andy Serkis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, at Tiff and loved it, calling the drama a “touching story of heartbreak.” Movieline now has our first trailer below and shows a movie I personally can’t wait to check out. Many films dealing with death, especially of a child, can prove to be cloying and melodramatic, but this seems to insert a great whimsical touch. Check it out below.

Death of a Superhero will play at Tribeca 2012 and hit VOD on April 17th and limited theaters on May 4th.
