ABC Announces Fall Schedule – Get A Peek At What’s Coming

22 May 2012 12:59 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Terry O'Quinn as Gavin Doran in "666 Park Avenue" (ABC/Andrew Eccles)

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.

Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.

It’s tricky to get a solid feel »

10 Most Promising New Fall Shows

18 May 2012 10:19 AM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

Every May, the major networks come to New York City with footage from the shows they've ordered for fall and a U-haul filled with booze as they try and tempt advertisers to buy airtime on their channel. This not only allows ad sales folk to rub elbows with the stars but also serves as the first time anyone gets to see snippets from all the new fall pilots!

Related - Is Your Favorite Show Returning Next Fall?

And I did the legwork this year, hitting up every network presentation to find out which warrant a spot on your DVR and which should be avoided like the plague.

What follows are the 10 Most Promising Network Pilots (while TNT, USA and MTV each have shows that deserve spots on this list, we're keeping things to the big 5). And while previous years have revealed prevailing thematic trends, the only consistent thing this week was that most of the networks saved the »

ABC upfronts: a network in search of hit shows and a much-needed identity

16 May 2012 8:27 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Near the bottom of the network heap, ABC's new lineup is heavy on big stars but seems light on groundbreakingly good scripts

ABC was the third of the big four networks to present its roster of new shows to advertisers this week. Here's our guide to the potential hits and misses.

What ABC needs

ABC is good at creating buzz around its shows, which often makes it seem that the network is doing better than it is. In fact, ABC was easily beaten into third place in the ratings last year, and if you count the Super Bowl ratings (which I always think is a little unfair as it skews things) then it finished fourth behind NBC.

On the surface there's no clear reason for this – ABC had one of last year's most talked-about new shows, Revenge, and the season's only real breakout hit, Once Upon A Time. It has America's biggest comedy, »

'Last Resort': Scott Speedman and Andre Braugher go nuclear in ABC's new drama

15 May 2012 4:52 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Last Resort" doesn't exactly seem on-brand for ABC, but the trailer for the new series sure has us intrigued.

Andre Braugher ("Men of a Certain Age") stars as the captain of a nuclear submarine who receives possibly sketchy orders to launch a strike on Pakistan. When he refuses and another U.S. warship fires on the sub, he and his executive officer (Scott Speedman, "Felicity" and "Underworld") decide to go rogue and set up camp on a sparsely populated tropical island, which suddenly becomes the world's newest nuclear-armed nation.

The trailer is tense and features some good action, but ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee also touted its "big-tent" qualities to reporters on Tuesday (May 15), saying it tested well with women and men. As for us, we're curious to see how much of a gray area Braugher's character lives in. He comes off as very principled at the beginning of the teaser, »

Last Resort: First Look at ABC's New Exotic Island Drama

From executive producer Shawn Ryan ("The Shield," "The Unit," "The Chicago Code") comes Last Resort, ABC's new drama centered around a group of naval officers who have gone Awol.

We open Last Resort 500 feet beneath the ocean's surface, where the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado is patrolling the waters.  One day, a message comes over a special radio channel, one that is only designed to be used if their homeland has been wiped out.  Their orders: fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan.

But Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) isn’t eager to start a war and he demands confirmation of the orders.  In response to his “insubordination”, the White House relieves him of duty.  His replacement, Xo Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman), finds himself facing the same decision. Like his captain, Kendal also refuses to fire without confirmation.  The Colorado is then targeted, »

Last Resort is coming to ABC.

The drama will air on Thursday nights at 8 and already has the TV world talking, considering its creator (Shawn Ryan) and its cast (led by Andre Braugher).

Last Resort Trailer

The drama centers on the submarine Colorado and the orders its crew is given on the premiere: fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan. When both the captain (Braugher) and the Xo (Scott Speedman) refuse to do so, the submarine itself is fired on.

The crew is considered enemies of the U.S. and proceeds to create its own sovereign nation.

High concept? Yes. Intriguing? Definitely, especially with a cast that also includes Autumn Reeser, Dichen Lachman, Daniel Lissing and more. Click through photos from the upcoming premiere now:

ABC Picks Up 5 New Dramas & 4 New Sitcoms

11 May 2012 8:00 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

ABC went on a bit of a pilot pick-up spree today for the 2012-2013 TV season, ordering five new dramas and four new comedies to series.

The five dramas are "Last Resort," "666 Park Avenue," "Nashville," "Zero Hour" and "Red Widow" (formerly "Penoza") -- and that's not counting "Mistresses" starring Alyssa Milano, which was already ordered to series.

On the comedy front, there's "Family Tools," "The Neighbors," "Malibu Country" and "How to Live With Your Parents For the Rest of Your Life" (which we can't even begin to abbreviate, but hope they'll rename so we don't have to).

Here's the scoop on the dramas:

"Last Resort" is an action-adventure drama from "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan. Shot in Hawaii, which subs for the South Pacific, it revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine that disobeys orders and becomes a target for everyone from Nato to the mob. Andre Braugher, »

Renewals, Pickups and Cancellations Roundup for ABC, NBC, CW and AMC

11 May 2012 7:09 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Dozens of shows learned their fate this week so we’re going to run down the latest as they came in on Friday evening. The headline news included series such as Nikita, Happy Endings, Parks & Rec, Body of Proof, and yes, even Whitney being renewed while NBC’s Awake and Harry’s Law were not.

Make note of how many 13-episode seasons were ordered. The thinking may be that the networks are learning that the cable model does work better, because it 1) allows more shows to be added to the lineup and 2) keeps the interest going through the fall instead of trying to carry the momentum through the holiday breaks. That doesn’t give fans many episodes to be excited about, but in the case of Community, any word of renewal, regardless of number was good news.

Networks could also be thinking the strategy behind 13-episode seasons could be to »

Upfront roundup: ABC realizes if it wants to take the weekend off, it had better renew and cancel some stuff

Just when you thought upfronts news was over for the week, ABC goes and orders a bunch of new series—nine!—then cancels almost as many. The network’s moves are expected to essentially finalize the product it will have for the 2012-13 season, though there’s an outside chance it will pick up another comedy or two. Among the series picked up is the Shawn Ryan-produced sci-fi military drama Last Resort about the crew of a nuclear submarine that declares itself an autonomous nuclear nation after refusing to fire its nuclear missiles. ABC Picks Up 666 Park, How to Live with Your Parents..., Last Resort

ABC has added to their pickup list from earlier, this time bringing on two additional dramas and an additional comedy for the upcoming season.

666 Park Avenue takes place at The Drake, an apartment building whose tenants don't know that their home is enveloped by the supernatural. Every tenant has made a deal with the Devil and that's not quite the environment that the new managers, played by Rachael Taylor and Dave Annabale, had in mind when they took the job. 666 Park Avenue stars Vanessa Williams, Terry O'Quinn, Robert Buckley, and Mercedes Masohn, among others.

From Shawn Ryan, Last Resort takes a look at a submarine crew that disregards orders to fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan. As a result, they themselves are hit, eventually sunk, and fighting for their lives. However, the crew manages to gather themselves and relocate »

We were obviously on board from the beginning, but after that trailer, Batman is fighting "The Avengers" for a spot at the forefront of our minds, and we didn't think that was actually possible. "Prometheus" writer Damon Lindelof, who always takes to Twitter for his hilarious commentary, had plenty to say about the video.

"I'm thrilled to see that Tom Hardy's elocution lessons have paid off. #TheRainInSpainFallsMainlyOnTheBane," he wrote, alluding to how audiences can now understand Hardy's lines. He also imagined lines that would exist if he wrote the script, "I've buried enough Waynes. And has my Wayne Tree grown yet? In about two months, the networks will start revealing their programming lineups for the 2012-13 season. But Zap2it would like to give you a head start about which ones have caught our eyes. Plus, there are so many pilots and actors filling up roles being announced that we would also like to hopefully simplify things for you.

The (enormous) caveat is, of course, that we haven't seen these pilots because most of them haven't finished (or even started) filming yet. But here are the pilots from ABC that we think look promising.
