What do “The Voice,” “American Ninja Warrior,” “MasterChef Junior” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” have in common besides being in the reality competition race for an Emmy?

They rely heavily on the collaboration of artisans and craftspeople: Lighting designers working with choreographers, costume designers working with hair and makeup artists, and executive producers making sure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

“This show is really collaborative,” says Casey Patterson, who executive produces “Lip Sync Battle” with Jay Peterson. “The minute someone is booked and confirmed, we gather the department heads — Jeanie Cheek, our wardrobe stylist; our set designer Keith Raywood; and our art directors Anthony Bishop and Natacha Aubier-Hatch; and our choreographer Danielle Flora — and get on the phone with the talent. We brainstorm ideas, then everyone is off and running in their own worlds, sometimes with just hours to pull it off.”

Hidden Figures,” “La La Land,” and “Passengers” won the top feature film awards at Saturday’s Art Directors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

Hidden Figures” won the prize for best period film, while “La La Land” and “Passengers” took home the contemporary and fantasy film trophies.

Among the top TV winners, “Westworld” won for Period or Fantasy series, “Mr. Robot” nabbed the contemporary award and “The Night of” won for TV movie or limited series. Other winners included “SNL,” “Mozart in the Jungle,” and “Beyonce: Lemonade,” which was honored in the awards or event special category.

Hosted by Patton Oswald, the ceremony also honored director Brad Bird with the Cinema Imagery Award. Lifetime honors went to production designer Rene Lagler, scenic artist Albert Obregon, set designer Cate Bangs and senior illustrator Joseph Musso.

Art Directors Guild Awards 2017: ‘La La Land’ and ‘Hidden Figures’ Lead Winners

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.

'Jackie', 'Beyoncé: Lemonade' among Art Directors Guild nominees

The Guild announced on Thursday nominations for the 21st Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards across a multitude of categories covering features, TV, commercials and music videos.

Among the film nominees were Café Society, Manchester By The Sea, Hell Or High Water and Arrival.

TV nominees encompass Game Of Thrones, The Night of and Silicon Valley, while Beyonce’s Lemonade visual extravaganza is a heavy-hitter in the music videos section.

The awards show is set for February 11 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland.

The Art Directors Guild has nominated Doug Chiang and Neil Lamont of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” for an excellence in production design award in the fantasy film category. Also nominated in the category are “Arrival,” “Doctor Strange,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and “Passengers.”

The winners will be announced at the guild’s 21st annual awards show, which will take place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood on Feb. 11.

Voting in the period film category resulted an in a tie, meaning that there are six films nominated rather than five. Those movies are “Cafe Society,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hail, Caesar!,” “Hidden Figures” and “Jackie.”
