Judge Dredd Year One offers prequel ahead of Pete Travis reboot starring Karl Urban

24 August 2012 10:01 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Exploring the early years of comic book heroes is proving popular in Hollywood.

Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class and TV hit Smallville are among the success stories, while Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and the upcoming series Arrow are also exploiting the trend.

Latest to join the crowd, but this time in printed form, is Judge Dredd. In anticipation of the upcoming Dredd movie, a new digital book aims to offer an essential introduction to the character and shed new light on his origins.

Matthew Smith, editor-in-chief of 2000 Ad - the comic in whose pages the character was introduced - takes us back to the futuristic lawman's first year on the beat in his new e-novella Judge Dredd Year One: City Fathers.

2000 Ad launches Dredd collection to celebrate Judge Dredd 2012 film reboot

11 August 2012 4:04 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Among the most famous British comic book characters, lawman of the future Judge Dredd is coming to cinemas worldwide next month.

Never mind Sylvester Stallone's 1995 effort, latest adaptation Dredd is a gritty new take directed by Pete Travis and starring Karl Urban.

And to accompany that event, 2000 Ad - in whose comic book pages the Judge was introduced - has teamed up with publishers Abaddon for a trio of tales from the mean streets of Mega-City One.

The 704-page omnibus edition, also titled Dredd, is out now at comic book stores, bookshops and online retailers including Amazon. A full description is included below.

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Man of Steel teaser trailers

29 July 2012 6:06 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing team share their thoughts on the Man of Steel teaser trailers...

Christopher Nolan's (Memento, Inception) beloved Batman trilogy is finally finished. For many fans of the director, and the character of the Caped Crusader, the end is hard to take. Our reviewers here at Flickering Myth are proclaiming The Dark Knight trilogy as their favourite of all time. Presumably however, the money men at various Hollywood studios have been thinking about filling the void left vacant by the departure of Nolan's vision for a few years already. The huge box office figures demand similar comic book adaptations.

One hero ripe for redevelopment is Superman. His last cinematic outing, 2006's Superman Returns, failed to make a significant impression with fans or the general public. Helmed by X-Men director Bryan Singer, the film did not really attempt anything new and the end product was mediocre, familiar and forgettable. »

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the first trailer for Jack Reacher

19 July 2012 1:58 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing team trade opinions on the first trailer for Jack Reacher...

Although 2011 ended on a high for Tom Cruise with the release of the blockbuster action sequel Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, so far this year hasn't been too kind to the Hollywood star. Aside from his marital troubles, Cruise's most recent offering Rock of Ages met with a decidedly mixed response from critics and failed to recoup its $75m production budget at the global box office. However, Cruise will be hoping to put that behind him and replicate the holiday cheer afforded to Ghost Protocol as he returns to cinemas this December for the lead in Jack Reacher, an adaptation of the Lee Child novel One Shot from writer-director Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun).

Earlier this month, the first trailer for Jack Reacher was released, prompting a discussion within the Flickering Myth writing team about Cruise's latest role. »

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the trailer for Dredd

6 July 2012 3:13 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing team trade opinions on the first trailer for Dredd...

In 1995 Sylvester Stallone starred as judge, jury and executioner in Judge Dredd. Whilst the film has its fans, they are mostly drowned out by the critics. The movie has a dire 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is slammed for weaknesses in almost every department. It is remembered as a slice of mindless action, which for some went too far, glorifying violence and doing little else. Veteran critic Roger Ebert neatly summarised Judge Dredd as "a Blade Runner for audiences with Attention Deficit Disorder".

Fans of the comic book that inspired Stallone's futuristic action flick presumably hoped that someone would come along to create a film worthy of the source material. In late June we showed you the trailer for Dredd, directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point). But what did our writing team make of the sneak peek of this new, »

You gotta give Jolie credit for not being afraid of the physicality of her roles. Here, we’ve got pictures from the set of Maleficent where she is filming stunts, strapped into a harness and wirework dangling from a large crane. Check out these shots below:

Horny Angelina Jolie is Maleficent for Disney

19 June 2012 10:55 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Boomtron.com

Angelina Jolie’s name was recently being thrown around in the same sentence as Fifty Shades of Grey but for now let’s focus on something that the Hollywood star is definitely involved in (though Sin City is always worth taking about).  This image of Jolie as Maleficent, the classic Disney villain most notably from Sleeping Beauty is, I think, just on point. Disney isn’t rolling out Maleficent  until 2014 but I have to say that I kind of Love this tease – looks like something you could see in some del Toro frame.

Disney announced today that production has officially started on the live-action film Maleficent (an origin story of the villain from Sleeping Beauty), and have included our first look at Angelina Jolie in costume as the title character.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about this film.  Disney's live action films as of late have been...lacking.  Yet with each one I hope they get it right.  So I'm approaching this film cautiously, and hoping that it turns out for the best.  That being said, I know there are many fans who have been anxiously awaiting this film getting started, so this is sure to be a treat for them.  Below is the first image of Jolie in the titular role, and she sure looks the part.
