Just when the found footage genre was starting to blossom into a new tidal wave trend of movie-making on the back of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity’s success, one of the biggest names looking to dip their toe into it has run back shivering to the relative security of a beach hut. And before that metaphor gets stretched even further beyond breaking point, we should point out that the big name in question is Roland Emmerich, who has shut down pre-production on his planned low-budget alien invasion movie The Zone.Back on Halloween, we reported that Emmerich had announced he was doing a Jj Abrams and getting into the low-fi, amateur footage genre with the film, which would use relative newcomers Peter Mackenzie and Brandon Scott and others to blend improvisation with Guillaume Tunzini’s script to create something fresh for a price tag of around $5 million. »

Roland Emmerich (2012) is in pre-production on The Zone, a found-footage film revolving around an alien invasion, set to be improv-based and cast with relative unknowns.
Sony, who will distribute the film as a negative pick-up, have confirmed a $5M budget, which is considerately less that what Emmerich’s films usually cost.
The Zone comes from a screenplay penned by Guillaume Tunzini. No other details are known, other than the casting of two leads, one playing the central journalist, while the other will portray the cameraman.
The Zone is expected to film in mid-November.

Tentpole sci-fi director Roland Emmerich plans to return to the alien invasion turf he made his mark in with “Independence Day” with a film that will only cost him $5 million. That’s his lowest budget since “Stargate.”
The project is titled “The Zone” and it’s awash in secrecy. “Zone” will tout a style similar to “Paranormal Activity” and “Cloverfield.” Much of the film will be improvised with a cast of unknowns. French scribe-helmer Guillaume Tunzini wrote the script.
The only hints about the film per the Hollywood Reporter is its casting call sheet: “Two leads were just cast, one playing a haggard journalist in his 40s or 50s, the other a black man in his early to mid 20’s, the cameraman.”
Production is to begin in November and Sony will distribute the film. »

"Independence Day," "2012" and "The Day After Tomorrow" director Roland Emmerich is set to churn out another film in the sci-fi disaster genre with "The Zone" says the trades.
Shoot in the 'found footage' pseudo-documentary style ala "Cloverfield" and "Paranormal Activity", the story revolves around an alien invasion and will utilise a cast with relative unknowns improvising much of their performances.
The two lead characters will be a haggard middle-aged TV journalist and his young 20-something cameraman. Unlike Emmerich's previous mega-budget films, 'Zone' will be shot for just $5 million.
Guillaume Tunzini penned the script and Loucas George is a producer. Shooting kicks off in November and Sony Pictures is expected (but not confirmed) to distribute. »

Everyone’s favorite director (by everyone I mean like two people) Roland Emmerich is jumping back into the alien invasion genre. Heat Vision reported yesterday that the man behind 2012 and other massive and expensive epics is hard at work on a movie called The Zone. This movie, with a budget of 5 million dollars (the lowest Emmerich has had in quite some time), is going to be a found footage movie in the vein of Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project. The Zone was written by French scribe Guillaume Tunzini (the French film FrogZ) and from what the sources say, two people have already been cast but no one is naming names quite yet.
I was 9 when Independence Day came out and although it admittedly hasn’t aged that well (story-wise anyway, the effects are still awesome), it’s one of those movies I will keep in my heart until the day I die. »

Independence Day writer/director Roland Emmerich's getting in on the alien invasion action one more time with his project, The Zone, according to The Hollywood Reporter. THR says Emmerich's keeping much of the story a secret, however he will be using the 'found footage' approach to the film. He's also hiring on a basically unknown cast who will be doing lots of improvisation. And unlike with his normal action films, Emmerich will be working off of a relatively small budget ($5 million-ish).
French producer/writer/director Guillaume Tunzini wrote the script. THR says Emmerich's aiming for a mid-November start of shooting.
Emmerich recently finished filming Anonymous, a political thriller centering around the man who supposedly really wrote the plays credited to William Shakespeare. Anonymous is expected to hit theaters in September 2011.

He's currently planning to shoot the new film in the style of the recently popular "found footage" genre. This is the same style used for films such as The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity.
The film comes from screenwriter Guillaume Tunzini, and it will deal with a large-scale alien invasion and will be produced on a small budget of under $5 million dollars, which will be the smallest budget the director has worked with. This might be good for him. The film will also star an unknown cast, and will feature largely improvised scenes.

Emmerich is returning to the alien invasion genre with a top secret project titled The Zone. Known for his over-the-top action set pieces, Emmerich reportedly hasn’t worked with a budget of less than $100 million since Stargate. That was 1994 — seven films ago.
