Marvel Set Game Of Thrones’ Alan Taylor To Direct Thor 2

27 December 2011 5:00 AM, PST | | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The first of our superhero films from Marvel this year, Thor was an impressive box office and critical success when it came out in April this year, taking just shy of $450m. from its $150m. budget.

Pretty much ever since it found such success in cinemas, there’s been talk of a sequel, and it officially came out in the summer that the original’s director, Kenneth Branagh, was opting out of returning for the sequel, in what seemed to be a completely friendly parting.

Since then, there was first talk of Brian Kirk, best known for his work on Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, coming on board the project, but then in October, Patty Jenkins officially signed on for the director’s job instead.

Earlier this month, though, word came that Jenkins and Marvel had parted ways based on creative differences, and the search has been back on »

TV Fanatic Staff Round Table: The Worst Show of 2011

26 December 2011 8:44 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Over the last couple weeks, TV Fanatic staff members have been debating the Best of 2011, from villains to comedies to couples.

But not every program was a winner this year. Some were quickly canceled. Others delivered a disappointing season after years of quality. Others remain on the air... for some inexplicable reason. Below, we debate the following question and then pose it to readers:

What Was The Worst Show Of 2011?

Matt Richenthal: Due to expectations, it has to be season six of Dexter. It's not like anyone expected anything from The Playboy Club or How To Be a Gentlemen. But Dexter had been one of my favorite shows for years... until out-of-touch writers delivered two of the most desperate storylines I've ever witnessed: an imaginary character, and Deb actually falling in love with her brother. Icky, unnecessary, depressing.

Jim Garner: Camelot on Starz. Just because you're on cable does not »

TV Fanatic Staff Round Table: Breakout Star of 2011

15 December 2011 10:25 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

It's Breaking Bad vs. The Vampire Diaries vs. Game of Thrones vs. Revenge vs. many other shows in our latest edition of the TV Fanatic Staff Round Table.

With 2012 drawing to a close, your favorite Tvf critics are gathering to debate various topic from the year that was. First, it was the Best New Show of 2011. Now, we're asking our writers, and then our readers, to answer this question:

Who Was The Breakout Star Of 2011?

Matt Richenthal: Giancarlo Esposito. I had never heard of this actor before he first appeared on Breaking Bad as businessman/drug lord Gustavo Fring. And after watching his chilling work on season four, I'll never forget him.

Steve Marsi: Joseph Morgan. A relative unknown before being cast as The Vampire Diaries' Klaus, he was given the arduous task of playing a character billed as the most evil, powerful bloodsucker in the history of time. »

2 Broke Girls Midseason Report Card: C

14 December 2011 2:02 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Before you unwrap any presents, are you ready to unwrap another Midseason Report Card?

With every show either on hiatus or about to take a very long break for the holidays, our staff has been taking this opportunity to evaluate where a handful of programs stand around their seasonable halfway point.

Among other shows, we've covered Supernatural; Private Practice and Fringe. Now, chief 2 Broke Girls critic Kris Hemki take on this popular new CBS sitcom...

Best Character: Max. I’m a huge fan of Kat Dennings’ heart, wrapped in a hard shell of snark. Max also gives us a wonderful backstory to root for, and a love story that really made her vulnerable and lit up the few episodes in which they were highlighted. Max can swagger Brooklyn all she wants, but she’s relatable. At the end of the day, I can’t help but wish her much success. »

TV Fanatic Round Table: Best New Show of 2011

13 December 2011 12:27 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

From the brilliance of Breaking Bad to the cuteness of Zooey Deschanel, from the nudity on True Blood to the tears we're still shedding over Friday Night Lights... it's been quite a 12 months in television.

Over the next couple weeks, members of the TV Fanatic staff will gather for a handful of Round Table discussions, all based on a single, year-end question and all concluding with a poll that asks readers for their opinions. Ready to debate? Let's start with...

What Was The Best New Show Of 2011?

Matt: Homeland. This may be the easiest Round Table question I've ever answered. 2011 Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama, thy name is Claire Danes.

Jim: 2 Broke Girls. Max and Carolyn are the Felix and Oscar of the 21st century. What a great pairing of actresses. I adore both Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs.

Eric: Game of Thrones. I couldn't even imagine »

2 Broke Girls Review: A Ring and a Ding

13 December 2011 12:46 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

In "And the Pop-Up Sale," the 2 Broke Girls tried to raise money for a new oven by selling off one of Caroline's expensive ring. The episode executed the personal storyline well, but it failed to deliver laughs again. Let's go over the good and the bad, shall we?

The Good. They've got the girls down pat. Their characters, the way they interact and play off each other, it's all done very well. My favorite part of the episode was Max's icy attitude towards Caroline after Caroline abandoned her, and then their eventual reconciliation. First, it gave Max another note to play: that of the hurt and betrayed friend. I could feel her heartbreak, her insecurity, all covered up with a hard shell.

Max hasn't had a lot of good things come her way in her life, and the show has done a good job of setting that up. Caroline's sacrifice, »

2 Broke Girls 1.12 "And the Pop-Up Sale" Review

2 Broke Girls pops out its latest "And the Pop-Up Sale" from its freshman season, which sees Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) looking to sell off some of Caroline's old jewelry in order to afford a new oven for their apartment.  "And the Pop-Up Sale" offers up an improvement from last week, even if it isn't going the extra mile just yet.

For 2 Broke Girls last effort “And the Reality Check,” I laid some harsh criticisms on the nature of the series and the audience it writes for as well, not counting myself among those who would relate to its particular brand of humor.  I don’t know that I’ll ever relate to the trials of 2 Broke Girls living in the big city, even as 1 broke boy, but nor would I expect the writers of the show to sit in their »

2 Broke Girls 1.11 "And the Reality Check" Review

2 Broke Girls checks out its latest "And the Reality Check" from its freshman season, which sees Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) turning to Max's employer Peaches to find a home for their horse Chestnut amidst The Real Housewives of Tribeca.  It's a difficult-to-access plot for certain, one that might leave even casual viewers re-evaluating their view on the series.

I asked myself why I watch 2 Broke Girls during the view of “And the Reality Check” tonight (other than the fat stacks of cash and corporate jet on retainer of course), feeling like there isn’t anything for me to enjoy.  Perhaps holed up in my ivory tower of a New York City apartment for some decades now, I’ve grown out of touch with the fads pop culture likes to parody.  I’ve not watched a single episode of any reality… »

Flood Disaster Led To Acting Success For Dennings

3 December 2011 6:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A flood nightmare put actress Kat Dennings on the path to Hollywood after her art school dreams were destroyed by a leaking water pipe.

The Thor star was considering becoming a professional artist when the incident left her reconsidering her options.

She tells Bust magazine, "I knit, I paint, I draw, I was gonna go to art school for classical illustration. I was getting a portfolio together. Every piece of art I'd ever made was on the floor where I was living. I go away for a while, come back, and a pipe had burst or something. It was flooded. Everything got destroyed - every single piece of art I had ever done (so) I didn't go to art school. I took it as a sign."

And now Dennings is one of Hollywood's top young actresses and the star of new U.S. TV hit 2 Broke Girls. »

Kat Dennings Addresses Those Comments About Her '2 Broke Girls' Uniform

"2 Broke Girls" is a certified hit for CBS, but does Kat Dennings know that a few extra fans are tuning in because of her figure-hugging waitress uniform?

"Eww! Why are they looking? That's sick," she said when Access Hollywood asked about some fans online who've suggested her uniform was geared toward highlighting her assets.

"Everybody must dress to highlight their shape," she continued. "In my case, I have a figure that needs a waist. When you have an hourglass shape, you must highlight your waist, ladies. When you do that, it highlights everything else. I can't help ...

Max and Caroline get in the holiday spirit. But first, Caroline has to convince Max of the reason for the season. Namely, they need money to buy a new mixer after Caroline broke their own one in an always-put-a-towel-over-the-bowl mishap. Turns out “this is a hard time of year for people who have feelings,” and Max ends up helping Caroline make it through the season instead. Also, always sip the energy drinks, yo.

2 Broke Girls 1.10 "And The Very Christmas Thanksgiving" Review

2 Broke Girls 1.10 "And The Very Christmas Thanksgiving" Review

2 Broke Girls gobbles up its latest effort "And the Very Christmas Thanksgiving" from its freshman season, which sees Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) taking second jobs as hired holiday help in a department store to make some extra cash for supplies.  There's a few cute moments to be sure, but if someone leaves this episode in your stocking you might be left wondering where you went wrong this year.

If it feels like the holidays come earlier and earlier each year, it’s because they do, and 2 Broke Girls treats us to what is ostensibly a Christmas episode before Thanksgiving has even occurred with very appropriately titled* “And The Very Christmas Thanksgiving.”  Granted the episode focuses more on Black Friday and the rush of holiday spending/jobs created in its wake, but having never participated in a Black Friday sale »

Happy 50th Birthday, Meg Ryan

19 November 2011 7:18 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

She rose to fame just before Julia Roberts who rose to fame just before Sandra Bullock. Together the three of them inarguably ruled the Romantic Comedy genre for a full decade back when, and this is an important note, the genre was producing regular classics. (Look at any modern RomCom Queen's filmography and try to find films half as good; the qualitative dropoff is more like a horror movie!)

Cut to 2011 and the other two members of America's Sweetheart Trinity: 1990s Division are still headliners and now Oscar Winners. So what happened to Meg Ryan and why did goodwill not follow her or rescue her as it did her royal sisters in big screen love and laughter? For a good long while people wondered when her Erin Brockovich would arrive. Eventually they stopped wondering but why couldn't she even stumble onto her own The Blind Side

It isn't a simple matter of talent. »

Ok, it can’t just be me imagining things – this show is getting progressively funnier, right? Hell, I think I got in a pretty descent ab workout from last night’s episode from all the genuine guffaws. Max and Johnny’s non-relationship relationship makes it to first base, despite him still having that beautiful, black, British girlfriend. And then they get hired by said girlfriend to cater Johnny’s art show. And then the frosting really hits the fan, so to speak. And I haven’t even gotten started on the subtext. And cleavage adjustments. And waking up in bed together. »

2 Broke Girls Review: Lip Locked

15 November 2011 1:29 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

2 Broke Girls must know that I'm a sucker for romance because "And The Really Petty Cash" delivered it in spades. And not just any kind of romance, angst-filled romance.

The Good. What I like about this show is that it's gone from average to good, and then to really good in a span of nine episodes. Tonight seemed to prove that the writers have finally discovered the exact combination of ingredients to deliver the perfect cupcake. This cupcake had a lot of Max and Caroline banter, a heavy dose of Johnny and of stolen kisses, a dash of good supporting character moments and was topped with lots of angst. Delicious, delicious angst.

In real life, we may crave happiness and stability, but our most poignant memories are often the angst-filled ones. When a show delivers that kind of tension in the right way, and especially when it's romance-related, it's like »
