New Release: Shameless: Season One DVD/Blu-ray

7 October 2011 4:07 PM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Release Date: Dec. 27, 2011

Price: DVD $39.98, Blu-ray $49.99

Studio: Warner Home Video

It's all in the family for William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum (r.) in Shameless: The Complete First Season.

Premium cable channel Showtime’s critically acclaimed television comedy-drama series Shameless: The Complete First Season has some seriously respectable lineage—it’s executive produced by John Wells, who’s projects include such TV smashes as ER and The West Wing.

Shameless stars William H. Macy (The Lincoln Lawyer) as the South side of Chicago’s Frank Gallagher, a proud, working-class patriarch to a motley brood of six smart, spirited and independent kids who, in all honesty, would probably be better off without him. In Frank’s booze-addled view, parenting just eats into his hard-earned, bar-crawling and carousing time — so he leaves it up to eldest daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera) to hold down the fort. »

Blu-Ray Review: Something Borrowed Is A Cliched, Unfunny, Morally Dubious Mess

29 August 2011 6:45 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

It’s no small irony that they’d call this film Something Borrowed given how liberally it magpies from almost every rom-com we have seen over the past years, and you could perhaps forgive its brazenness if it wasn’t for the fact that the film does nothing with the established tropes and cliches of the genre other than trot them out like some badly thought-out attempt at comfort through familiarity. Strictly speaking, it would probably have been easier to create something entirely original, because the commitment to plagiarism seems monstrously committed – as if it would take a lot of work to copy this much without trying to hide the fact even slightly.

The film was marketed squarely at lovers of chick-lit – an unfair generalisation, since some of them are actually far more intelligent than association with this film would suggest – and is something of a modern riff on A »

Interview: Engaging Colin Egglesfield of ‘Something Borrowed’

9 May 2011 1:55 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Colin Egglesfield is in an enviable position. In his major film debut, “Something Borrowed,” he is engaged to Kate Hudson, and also shows his affection for Ginnifer Goodwin. He is torn between two lovers, but handles both with natural charm.

Egglesfield has carved out a career through hard work and perseverance. After going through the pre-med program at the University of Iowa, he turned to modeling to earn money for medical school, and ended up doing it full time. He morphed from that career to acting, where he built a resume of TV and movie roles until landing on “All My Children” in 2005, playing the son of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci), Dr. Josh Madden.

Something Borrowed Steals Two Hours of Your Life

9 May 2011 6:42 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

I love romantic comedies. I have a good laugh, and the boy and the girl get together in the end. Usually I want the boy and the girl to get together in the end. However, Something Borrowed kind of ruined that, and left me with a romantic comedy that was not at all romantic.

Something Borrowed did have funny moments. Sadly, John Krasinski’s character Ethan was the only one bringing the laughs, and he moved to England at some point during the course of the movie. Ethan was also the only character I cared about and wanted good things for, because he was the least selfish in the entire movie.

The movie was so disappointing that I found other ways to keep myself entertained while watching the movie. One way was noticing that Geoff Pierson was in the movie as Dex’s dad. I have loved Geoff Pierson since Unhappily Ever After, »

Film Review: ‘Something Borrowed’ is Something Bad

6 May 2011 3:20 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Wedding movies, the wedding industrial complex, weddings as women’s literature, where does it end? (divorce) It’s that time of year, and the wedding film makes its ritualistic appearance, here represented by the morally bankrupt “Something Borrowed.”

Rating: 2.0/5.0

This upper middle class fantasy involves peachy-keen, newly minted thirtysomethings experiencing the wedding bell blues. They love each other, over and over again, but have no trouble sneaking behind each other’s backs for a little hey-hey. The most disingenuous character turns out to be a hero, and the most heroic ends up struggling with his vague sexual orientation in London. What is a family values culture to do?

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) walks into her 30th birthday surprise party, which is shorthand for a this-is-your-life movie set up. Her best friend Darcy (that name should be stricken from the women’s literature oeuvre), portrayed by Kate Hudson, lauds her with »

Movie Review: Something Borrowed (2011)

Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin in Something Borrowed

Photo: Warner Bros. Something Borrowed centers on a love triangle conjured in Hell. Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Dex (Colin Egglesfield) have had a crush on one another for years now, but you'd never know it considering Dex is engaged to Rachel's lifelong best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson). However, feelings can't be held in check forever as this film kicks off with Dex and Rachel climbing in bed together, offering up a night of sex that could fill a feature length romantic comedy. Oh joy!

Your first instinct may be to say, "Well damn, Rachel and Dex are terrible people to do that to Darcy." But wait, you haven't met Darcy yet. You see, Darcy is a self-centered and egotistical shrew of a woman you wouldn't want to spend more than ten minutes with. It is this negative aspect that gives the audience pause. »
