You may think the chilling future prophesied in the Terminator films and offshoots is purely fantasy – after all, Skynet didn’t manage to come online and destroy us all in 1997 – but not so fast. Kevin Warwick, a professor of cybernetics at Reading University, sees a future where cyborgs are the norm and non upgraded humans are kept in places like zoos. Even better? He’s working to make it a reality. Maybe Judgment Day wiping out most of humanity was the better outcome after all… Warwick has spent the past few decades studying how technology can be combined with biology to make both humans and machines better. Caught up as we might be in all the hoopla over the Cannes lineup, we shouldn't overlook several other festivals and events either already underway or opening today.

The Films of Bette Gordon is a five-program series on at New York's Anthology Film Archives through Sunday. "The series includes two of Gordon's landmark works, Variety (1984 [image above]) and The United States of America (1975)," notes Amy Taubin for Artforum. "The latter was co-directed by James Benning, Gordon's boyfriend at the time. It plays on Program 1, preceded by two other Gordon/Benning collaborations, Michigan Avenue (1973) and i-94 (1974), and followed by three of Gordon's solo turns, Still Life (1972), An Erotic Film (1975), and An Algorithm (1977). All six films are being shown in new prints, courtesy of Anthology's preservations program.
