Box Office: 'Transcendence' flops as 'Captain America' stays at No. 1 on Friday

20 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Holdovers "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Rio 2" ruled the box office on Friday, while the new Johnny Depp sci-fi film "Transcendence" experienced a system crash -- trailing behind fellow newcomer "Heaven is For Real."  Marvel's "Captain America" continued its reign as box office champ, commanding another $9.5 million. Its domestic total stands at a heroic $184 million. It should earn in excess of $25 million for the weekend, placing it past the $200 million goal, and leaving the 2011 original in the dust.  Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford and Samuel L. Jackson star. The animated sequel "Rio 2" flew to $9.2 million for No. 2, rising its domestic haul to a hearty $62 million. It will likely earn around $23 million through Sunday.  Proving that the recent success of "God's Not Dead" was no fluke, the release of the faith-based "Heaven Is For Real" -- coinciding with Easter weekend -- was blessed with a suprisingly huge $7.8 million in Friday. »

Johnny Depp Flops Again, ‘Captain America’ Sequel Rises Past its Predecessor

21 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” eked out a small lead over Fox’s “Rio 2” at the Friday box office. The superhero pic looks to win the weekend in this year’s second three-peat (after “The Lego Movie”).

The “Captain America” sequel earned $9.6 million, just over the animated movie’s $9.2 million, which should keep growing as kids hit theaters over the Easter weekend.

Warner Bros.’ new entry “Transcendence” was no match for the epic battle of the sequels, the second tightest race of the year following last weekend’s close showdown. The Johnny Depp-starrer came in at a disappointing fourth place with $4.8 million, making it the actor’s fourth flop in a row. Another newcomer, Sony’s “Heaven Is for Real” exceeded expectations by rising to $7.9 million.

With a cume of $184.5 million, “The Winter Soldier” overlapped its predecessor, “The First Avenger,” which hauled in $176.7 million domestically in its lifetime. »

For the weekend, Rio 2 should wind up with at least $23 million. After putting up strong mid-week numbers, Heaven is for Real continued to attract large crowds on Good Friday. The faith-based true story added $7.9 million, which brings its three-day total to nearly $15 million. »

Spider-Man Producer Says Avengers Crossover is a Last Resort

19 April 2014 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

It has long been a pipe dream for fans to see Spider-Man swing by the likes of Captain America and Iron Man in a future "Avengers" film, but the likelihood of such a thing happening is small while various studios hold the screen rights to Marvel's characters. Even though a brief Easter egg almost happened in Marvel's The Avengers , longtime Spider-Man producer Avi Arad says that a full-fledged crossover between the two franchises will only happen when they've run out of ideas. "I think I'm probably a little bit of the militant here,"  A rad said in an interview with IGN . "I think it will take a moment in which we've run out of ideas. There's so much to tell »

How to Play... a superhero: Tips from Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman

19 April 2014 1:00 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Bow down, mere mortals. Superheroes are among us once more. Captain America is already on screens battling the Winter Soldier. Spider-Man will soon be back to amaze us. Then two generations of X-Men unite in Days Of Future Past, while we'll be meeting the Guardians Of The Galaxy later this summer. And that's not to mention new outings in 2015 for the Avengers and Batman and Superman (together in the same movie!) in 2016.

It's astounding to think that, only two decades ago, all we had in terms of superhero blockbusters was a Batman franchise about to descend into Joel Schumacher-inspired camp. Today, the possibilities for Hollywood actors wanting to don cape and spandex are endless – but how best to approach the gig of playing a hero who is even more super than most A-listers already assume they are?

Johnny Depp’s ‘Transcendence’ Laying an Egg at the Box Office

18 April 2014 6:32 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Despite the star power of Johnny Depp, “Transcendence” will likely play fourth fiddle in the box office this Easter weekend.

The race looks to be a repeat of last weekend’s sequel showdown between Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and Fox’s “Rio 2,” which are each tracking for $25 million-plus.

Rio 2” looks to benefit from the holiday timeframe as the number of children on spring break doubled this weekend from 10% to 20%. The 3D comedy could win this weekend by a beak, as it stands to earn an estimated $27 million-plus — roughly $2 million more than “Captain America.”

“Winter Soldier” has grossed almost $510 million worldwide ($175 million domestically), while “Rio 2” has tallied $177.2 million ($53 million domestically) through Thursday.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “Transcendence” is headed for a soft $16 million-plus launch. The sci-fi thriller, which reportedly cost $100 million to produce, may suffer from lackluster word of mouth and poor reviews (pic currently has 19% Rotten Tomatoes meter). “Transcendence” could, »

Social Media Buzz: Science and Religion Collide as ‘Transcendence’ Takes on ‘Heaven Is For Real’

Does digital data offer indicators that can be used to monitor marketing effectiveness and predict box office success even before awareness turns into intent? We analyzed this weekend’s new movies across Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Google (the methodology behind the numbers is below) over the seven days leading up to their release, when marketing campaigns should be at their peak.

Transcendence

The digital campaign for “Transcendence,” starring Johnny Depp, has tied into the movie’s plot with a viral campaign from extremist group “Rift” and ads appealing to sci-fi and technology fans.

Transcendence” has appealed to older demographics through partnerships with established tech firms like Ibm and through takeovers on technology websites like The Verge and news sites like the Huffington Post, attempting to sell fans on the intelligent, sci-fi plot. To reach younger males, “Transcendence” has been featured heavily on video games site IGN in an attempt to »

Bandito Brothers Facility Boasts Wide-Open Spaces

18 April 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Just north of La Cienega and Jefferson Boulevards — where passengers disembarking from an elevated L.A. Metro line descend into a seeming no-man’s land of factories, warehouses and nondescript showrooms — Bandito Brothers’ production campus is hidden away on a 1.5-acre parcel.

The driveway that leads to the entrance appears at first glance like an alley where you’d hate your car to stall after dark. But pass the electric gate and it’s like stumbling onto an oasis.

The company’s main building, a 20,000-square-foot structure that resembles an airplane hangar, is so wide-open that stepping inside feels soothing, like a breath of fresh air. When Bandito Brothers first spotted the property, a one-time trailer factory in the ’50s before being taken over by a furniture-importing business, it resembled an abandoned junkyard. But according to company co-founder/CEO Mike “Mouse” McCoy, its potential was fully evident. “My wife (Carmella »

Travers on 'Transcendence': 'Biggest Disappointment of the Year'

18 April 2014 9:30 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Peter Travers has sky-high expectations on At The Movies this week: The film is Transcendence, which stars Johnny Depp, marks the directorial debut of Wally Pfister (the brilliant cinematographer behind Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy) and boasts a script that's long been on the Hollywood blacklist. It's the perfect recipe for a thrilling, provocative sci-fi flick about the dangers computers and technology — but as Travers reluctantly admits, Transcendence is anything but transcendent.

Under The Skin – The Review

18 April 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

So this weekend we’ve seen Jude Law take a walk on the wild side in the title role of Dom Hemingway. Now, we also get a new film starring a stateside screen beauty, Scarlett Johansson as she takes a walk on the weird side. Very weird. She stars in almost every minute of  Under The Skin from director Jonathon Glazer who gave us the enormously entertaining Sexy Beast (Ben Kingley’s character might have been “mates” with Dom!). But Skin is no look at the cockney criminal class. This film is based on a 2000 science fiction novel from Michel Faber. Now we’re used to seeing Ms. J dashing about in CG backdrops in big budget blockbusters like Michael Bay’s The Island  and over at Marvel Studios as the sublime Shield agent the Black Widow in, so far, three epics. But this film’s not in the same »

Forecast: 'Transcendence' to Trail 'Rio,' 'Captain America' Over Easter... >

17 April 2014 5:04 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Friday Am Update: Transcendence earned an estimated $850,000 from Thursday night shows. Among recent releases, that's around half of Noah's $1.6 million start, and around a quarter of 300: Rise of An Empire's $3.6 million. That's an especially disappointing number considering how many people are off from work or school for Good Friday. For the weekend, Transcendence may fall short of $20 million.Forecast: Four new movies hit theaters over Easter weekend, though the fight for first place will likely be a rematch between holdovers Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2.This is because the weekend's highest-profile release, Transcendence, is limping in to theaters with little buzz and horrible reviews. The movie is enough of a curiosity that it won't be a complete disaster, but there is a chance it winds up below $20 million. That would put it close to Heaven is for Real, which got a strong start on Wednesday. Meanwhile, »
