Star Wars Episode 7: Why Andrew Adamson Should Direct

19 November 2012 1:03 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Steven Spielberg. Brad Bird. J.J. Abrams. The list of names for who fans want to see take on the Star Wars universe is getting shorter and shorter, as directors who are being volleyed for the directing position by fanbases are now becoming quite vocal in shutting those dreams down. Still, there are resounding cries for directors like Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Rango), and Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) and those names have yet made statements. But one name that I never see on anyone’s list is that of Andrew Adamson. In fact, you may not even recognize the name alone. But he’s the wonderful fella that put Shrek and Narnia on the map, in their most successful installments.

He shared his directorial position with Vicky Jenson for the first Shrek, »

Synopsis:

Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.

The Madagascar series hasn't been one of the better animated franchises. Sure, the first two movies have made more than enough money, but neither of them were particularly great movies. Now comes the third installment, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, and I'll be damned if I didn't have a good time watching this one.

What separates this one from the first two is that the »

This week's new films

19 October 2012 4:07 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Beasts Of The Southern Wild (12A)

(Benh Zeitlin, 2012, Us) Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry. 93 mins

That rarest of things: a genuine, unclassifiable original that seems to have come out of nowhere. It's set in a nowhere time and place, a sort of post-Katrina New Orleans-meets-Kevin Costner's Waterworld, where our six-year-old narrator observes her father's illness and her bayou community's plight with dreamy detachment. It's a film that takes great risks – bare-bones story, non-professional actors, prehistoric creatures, jerky camerawork – but it all pays off beautifully.

Ginger & Rosa (12A)

(Sally Potter, 2012, UK/Den/Can/Cro) Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Alessandro Nivola. 90 mins

Two 1960s girlfriends come of age in very different ways in this outstanding drama, shadowed by anxieties over the nuclear family and the nuclear threat. Beautifully shot and powerfully acted, it sits neatly between Fish Tank and An Education.

Frankenweenie (PG)

(Tim Burton, 2012, Us) Charlie Tahan, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder. »

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted Review

Directors: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, Conrad Vernon

Cast: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Frances McDormand

Running Time: 93 mins

Certificate: PG

Synopsis: Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) attempt to fight their way back home to the New York from Africa.

As is standard for sequels, much loved characters are placed in different locations and studio chiefs pray the culture clash formula equals box office gold, as Madagascar 3 is sure to do.

Like most Dreamworks movies, the pace is frenetic from start to finish. The gags and action sequences come thick and fast, for most parts they do hit the mark. The action starts off when the foursome travel to Monaco hot on the heels of the penguins to try and hitch a flight back to the Big Apple. »

Dr Seuss’ books helped bring up many children and are loved by hundreds of thousands of people, all over the world. So it makes sense to transform them from page to screen, right? Stanley Lambchop, our main character, goes to sleep one night, expecting to wake up the next day as normal. However, during the night a bulletin board falls on top of him and he’s squished flat. Box Office: Madagascar 3 Movie Beats Prometheus

10 June 2012 7:56 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Madagascar 3 movie: Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

Weekend box office: The Prometheus movie monsters have been beaten by Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted‘s cuddly talking animals. And if studio estimates are accurate, Prometheus was — surprisingly — more than $10m behind Madagascar 3.

Assisted by outstanding business at 298 (costlier) IMAX locations (18% of the film’s box-office total) and 3D surcharges, Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus took in $50m (including $3.56m from Thursday midnight screenings) at 3,396 North American locations, versus Madagascar 3‘s 3D-assisted $60.35m at 4,258 venues. Those box-office estimates are found at Box Office Mojo.

Prometheus‘ weekend gross is the twelfth highest ever for an R-rated movie. That is, if you pretend something called inflation doesn’t exist. It’s also worth noting that 54% of Prometheus‘ box-office take came from 3D houses vs. 45% of the Madagascar 3 gross.

In Theaters: 'Safety Not Guaranteed' For 'Prometheus;' 'Madagascar 3' May Be The Weekend's 'Dark Horse'

8 June 2012 1:20 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Hello, and happy Friday! There is quite a presence of quieter subject matter this week, including an unassuming musician and Edward Cullen playing a human version of his lothario self. But of course, no shortage of big screen adventures in 3D either. And, amidst the hailstorm of big-budget summer flicks, I’ve been wondering the following: is Hollywood working toward an ultra version of the big-budget summer flick? Combining the hugest ideas into the über-Blockbuster, if you will. For example, what would happen if a bunch of animals and Snow White were shot into space with a team of androids, began to wreak mass pandemonium on the galaxy, and had to be put down by the ultimate intergalactic crimefighting team of the Men in Black and the Avengers? Well, maybe that’s the subject of the fourth installment of the “Madagascar” franchise. Or the plot to the "Snow White and the Huntsman »

Review: 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' Is Surprisingly Satisfying And Frantically Fun (If Wildly Uneven)

8 June 2012 10:20 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The "Madagascar" franchise, with its skeletal, if somewhat clever plot mechanics (animals from the Central Park zoo are mistakenly shipped to exotic lands – first Madagascar, then Africa proper – all the while longing for their urban environments), and characters almost exclusively defined by outdated ethnic stereotypes (mostly tired New Yorkers-as-neurotic-Jews-or-loud-African-Americans stuff), is arguably the least ambitious or satisfying of DreamWorks Animation’s admittedly low-wattage carousel of animated tent poles (which now include “Shrek” and its off-shoots, “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Kung Fu Panda”). And while “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” isn’t some kind of triumph, it is a surprisingly satisfying romp, especially when it keeps its manic pacing up.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” begins with a kind of “Previously on ‘Madagascar’…” update, which you’d be tempted to call lazy but with a series of movies as instantly forgettable as these, you’ll »

Review: Madagascar 3

8 June 2012 9:01 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

My expectations were low for Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. By the time most children's series have become trilogies, they've devolved into tired rehashes of past plotlines barely fit for plasma, much less silver screens ... not unlike Shrek 3. The strongest counterexample to this rule is Disney's Toy Story 3, an achievement the likes of which few animated movies will ever hope to approach.

Like its furry protagonists, Madagascar 3 breaks the rules, making for an enjoyable and fun-filled trip to the cinema.

Returning stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith are joined by Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Andy Richter, Tom McGrath, Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Martin Short and Frances McDormand, who voices a character modeled heavily based on Lucile Ball.

If that stellar cast wasn't enough, the music and visual gags -- including several homages to Inception -- make the movie fun for adults as well as kids. »

Film Review: Enjoyable ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’

8 June 2012 6:28 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s incredibly rare to be able to say this – the third installment in a hit animated franchise could arguably be the best. “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” is certainly more fun, clever, and enjoyable than the last film in this series and probably holds its own against the original. It’s not perfect – it’s often more hyperactive than it needs to be – but the film is grounded in the arcs of its beloved characters and presents some exciting new ones, fun settings, and funny dialogue. It’s far from an animated masterpiece but it is a fun diversion for young and old.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

[Review] Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

8 June 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

A round of applause for directors Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath—and Conrad Vernon who joins them to expand on his responsibilities playing Mason the monkey—because they have kind of accomplished the impossible with Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. I was surprised at how much better Escape 2 Africa was in comparison to the original Madagascar, but never expected my level of enjoyment to rise even more with the third. Darnell—also a co-writer with Noah Baumbach—and McGrath have grown alongside these characters and definitely found their voices. Where I could have cared less what happened to Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Melman (David Schwimmer), and Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) in 2005, I’m a little sad to realize this could be the end of their adventures.

Still not Pixar caliber in quality of story, emotional attachment, or cinematic expertise, the series has taken great strides to »
