Marvel Wins Ghost Rider Rights in Legal Dispute

29 December 2011 5:15 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While fans might have a lot of concerns with the Mark Neveldine/Brian Taylor-directed sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, they can now remove “legal battle over property rights” from that list. After the first Ghost Rider film debuted in 2007, comic book author and co-creator Gary Friedrich was none too pleased. In 1971, Friedrich, also known for his work on Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, was a freelancer working for Marvel. Absent from the comics world for decades since then, Friedrich popped up to raise a rights issue in 2004 when Marvel had announced  plans to release the first Ghost Rider film. Yesterday, less than two months from the February 17th release of the sequel, a New York federal judge ruled that Ghost Rider is a Marvel property, case closed. Or maybe not. Hit the jump for more on this case. THR originally reported on the assertion of Ghost Rider rights to Marvel over Friedrich. »

Judge Sends Ghost Rider Creator Packing

29 December 2011 4:12 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

With Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance getting set to make its theatrical debut in a few weeks, a lawsuit over who actually owns the character recently played out dramatically in the judicial system. Read on for the latest.

According to Deadline, rights to the flaming-skull, motorcycle-riding Ghost Rider belongs to Marvel Comics, a federal judge ruled. The vigilante played by Nicolas Cage in a 2007 movie and its upcoming sequel debuted in 1972 after Marvel freelancer Gary Friedrich first conceived him, the judge ruled. In his 2007 lawsuit, Friedrich claimed Marvel had infringed his rights to the character and its use in movies and merchandise. The judge said Friedrich relinquished his rights to Ghost Rider when he endorsed and cashed checks from Marvel. Those checks contained language relinquishing all rights.

Official Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Movie Site "Blazes" to Life

29 December 2011 8:37 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

With less than two months to go before its theatrical debut, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance has finally spawned an official movie site. Written and directed by Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine (Crank movies), Spirit of Vengeance is a strange sort of sequel. It keeps Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider from 2007's Ghost Rider, but reboots everything else, including Ghost Rider's origin, look and powers. While the videos and still images on the new site are nothing new, there are a number of cool downloads, including wallpapers, animated Gif images, icons and Twitter skins, with a game and 3D video stunt listed as "coming soon."

Comic Book Bites: Thor 2, The Dark Knight Rises, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Amazing Spider-Man

27 December 2011 2:30 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Following the departure of Patty Jenkins from Thor 2 because of "creative differences" with Marvel - with some sources claiming she was fired - a new director has been appointed.

According to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Alan Taylor has landed the job. He and Daniel Minahan, both of whom have helmed episodes of Game of Thrones, were previously said to be the two finalists for the post. Taylor has also directed episodes of Sex and the City, The Sopranos and Mad Men.

Prior to Jenkins' involvement, yet another Game of Thrones director, Brian Kirk, was briefly in talks to take on the flick after Kenneth Branagh decided not to return. Thor 2 is released on November 15, 2013.

Indicating the anticipation for the closing chapter of Christopher Nolan's Batman saga, The Dark Knight Rises has broken the record for the most downloaded trailer on iTunes.

Terra Nova Season 1 Review & Will Fox Make Second Series?

27 December 2011 1:25 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

We’ve reached the end of season one (possibly our only season), of Terra Nova, Fox’s major new sci-fi effort. Let’s look back at what we’ve had and where the success and failure of the show lies… (all my reviews are hyperlinked in the episode titles)…

We began with “Genesis,” a rather ho-hum pilot that introduced us to the Shannon family, Terra Nova, Commander Taylor (Stephen Lang), and a wildly implausible future world that I never, ever wanted to see again. It wasn’t the best episode in the world, but it did a serviceable enough job.

From there we went on to “Instinct,” which introduced more characters, including Doctor Malcolm Wallace (Rob Hallett). He had a past with Elisabeth (Shelly Conn), that went almost unmentioned after this episode. It was followed by “What Remains.” This was a low-point for the season, and was basically a retread of the Star Trek episode, »

The Week in Spandex - The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Ghost Rider, Chronicle and more

Presenting our weekly round-up of all the biggest news stories from the world of movie superheroes…

Anticipation for The Dark Knight Rises went into overdrive this past week with the build up to the release of the six-minute IMAX prologue and new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Batman swansong, both of which generated huge amounts of excitement off the back of poor quality bootlegs that were quick to spring up online (and even quicker to disappear, thanks to Warner Bros.’ legal team). As I’m sure you know, the prologue is being shown before select IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, while the trailer accompanies Sherlock Holmes 2 (well, in North America, at least). We’ll refrain from going into too much detail here to avoid any spoilers for those who haven’t had the chance to catch them, save to say that the trailer features all of the »

New Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance Trailer Requires Suspensions of Disbelief

16 December 2011 2:04 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Some films require a suspension of disbelief. For example, Spider-Man requires you to buy in to the fact being bitten by a spider gives you the ability to make a very nice lycra suit without any textiles training. Ghostbusters 1 & 2 require you to ignore the fact that prolonged exposure to a nuclear accelerator would not end with any discernible health issues, (that said, we haven’t seen Ghosbusters 3 yet. Which hopefully, for believability’s sake, involves Bill Murray, Dan Aykyroyd and Harold Ramis lying in hospital beds saying ‘that was a bad idea for our health. Children: don’t play with nuclear accelerators.’)

Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance requires several suspensions of disbelief.

1) That anyone would sanction a sequel after the Awful first one, which I watched for 10 minutes and decided that life could be better than this, so therefore sat in a beige room watching a pot of grass grow for 12 days, »
