Sales agent and Prod co. Inferno Ent.’s Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson must totally be stoked at finding one of their own in the Main Competition this year. Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly (aka Cogan’s Trade) will have photogs going bezerk for Brad Pitt and the film might just pan out to be this year’s Drive for being so badass. On the horizon we have Allen Hughes breaking away from his brother with Broken City and Andrew Niccol takes on fan favorite The Host.

Interview: Matt Lucas Talks "Small Apartments" and Walking Around In Tighty Whities

29 March 2012 11:31 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

You may recognize comedic actor Matt Lucas from his work in the U.K.- based sketch comedy show Little Britain or as Kristen Wiig's passive aggressive roommate in Bridesmaids. His comic chops are top notch, but he recently test drove his American accent and his dramatic acting skills in Small Apartments, which made its World Premiere at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival.

Set in the grimy, hyperreality created by music video auteur Jonas Åkerlund (the man responsible for creating Lady Gaga and Beyonce's  technicolored "Telephone" video as well as many-a-Madonna vids) , Matt stars as Franklin Franklin, a man who has an affinity for Switzerland, orange soda, blowing into his Ricola alphorn, and has an extensive collection of wigs. While living in his dilapidated apartment, his tyrant-of-a-landlord (Peter Stormare) pays him a visit and then Lucas' character "accidentally" kills him. The rest of the movie follows »

SXSW 2012 Review: Like Its Setting, ‘Small Apartments’ Is Cheap, Dirty, and Gross

16 March 2012 8:41 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The skin-crawling world of Small Apartments is presented without irony or judgment – so it’s not surprising that, in such an off-kilter environment, Matt LucasFranklin Franklin (yes, that’s really his name) sounds relatively sane. Even when he’s off-handedly confessing to the murder of his landlord, Lucas’ delivery is so deadpan that no one takes him seriously – after all, why would Franklin kill anyone? Oh, possibly because (like everybody else in his crumbling apartment building) he’s totally deranged? Based on Chris Millis’ novel of the same name, Jonas Åkerlund’s film centers on Franklin’s life in the days following the death of his evil landlord (Peter Stormare). Franklin’s life is normally pretty weird, and having a dead body hanging out in his dingy apartment isn’t helping matters. His neighbors (including Johnny Knoxville, Rebel Wilson, Juno Temple, and James Caan – a supporting cast deserving of much better than this production) aren’t »

SXSW '12 | Jonas Akerlund Talks His Busy 2011, Making Bizarro New Feature 'Small Apartments' Along with 34 Commercials and 5 Music Videos

14 March 2012 12:29 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Swedish director Jonas Akerlund, best known for his innovative videos for the likes of Prodigy ("Smack My Bitch Up"), Lady Gaga ("Telephone" and "Paparazzi") and Madonna ("Ray of Light") came to SXSW for the world premiere his third feature "Small Apartments."   In "Small Apartments," Los Angeles is a world full of bold colors and neons.  And on its sexy outskirts lives Franklin Franklin ("Little Britain" actor Matt Lucas, best known in the states as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"), a decidedly unsexy recluse who pines for his hospitalized brother (James Marsden) while he stays inside in his tightie wighties, blowing on his horn (just like the Ricola commercials) dreaming of a life in Sweden.  Mostly due to his penchant for daily horn practice and his pervish spying, Franklin is despised by his neighbors (played by James Caan, Johnny Knoxville, and »

'Small Apartments' Shows Johnny Knoxville's 'Sensitive Side'

13 March 2012 11:18 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From what we've seen of Jonas Akerlund's "Small Apartments" it is very likely a strange, yet funny film. In other words, it's the perfect kind of film to premiere at Austin's annual South by Southwest Film Festival. Not to mention the intrigue surrounding the curiously colorful cast of characters the prolific music video director has assembled to fill out the ranks of his film: Matt Lucas ("Bridesmaids"), Johnny Knoxville, Juno Temple, James Caan and more.

When MTV News caught up with Akerlund, Lucas and Knoxville at SXSW recently, they talked about the film's strange and dark elements, as well as the fact that the eclectic group of actors in the cast are all playing against type, in roles we might not expect.

"It’s a strange movie," Lucas admitted.  "It’s a dark movie with comic undertones about a bunch of characters who live in a rundown apartment block »

SXSW '12 | In Which Rob Riggle and Todd Rohal Crash Iw's Johnny Knoxville Interview

13 March 2012 7:46 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When you book Johnny Knoxville for a one-on-one, it's a safe bet to expect the unexpected. With our bet firmly placed, the "Jackass" star delivered just that during our chat with him at SXSW. Knoxville's been to the festival before, but never for a film (he previously attended to support his cousin, musician Roger Alan Wade). For his inaugural official year at the event, Knoxville has two films: "Nature Calls" from director/writer Todd Rohal ("The Cataclysm Catechism") and Jonas Akerlund's star-studded ensemble drama, "Small Apartments." In "Nature Calls," Knoxville plays brother to Randy Stevens (Patton Oswalt), a Scoutmaster who essentially kidnaps Knoxville's kid for a weekend scout trip. "Small Aparments" finds Knoxville in dramatic mode, sporting a black shaggy wig as a pot-smoking loon, oblivious to the fact that his neighbor ("Little Britain" star Matt Lucas) is harboring a dead body in »

SXSW: 'Bridesmaids' and 'Little Britain' star Matt Lucas on baring (almost) all in 'Small Apartments'

12 March 2012 3:56 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Matt Lucas has appeared in a significant state of undress throughout his career, from playing Kristen Wiig’s odd roommate in Bridesmaids to several characters on his hit BBC America sketch comedy show Little Britain. But for his first feature film leading role, in Jonas Åkerlund’s dark ensemble comedy Small Apartments – which premiered Saturday night at the SXSW film festival — Lucas was still quite not prepared for how much skin he’d be showing in the role. As the not-quite-all-there shut-in Franklin Franklin, Lucas is predominantly in just a large pair of tighty whities, a bad wig, and some clogs. »

SXSW 2012: Small Apartments Review

11 March 2012 3:50 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Small Apartments deserves credit for getting inside your head through force of strangeness alone, and it has enough going on to merit at least some kind of interpretation.  You can argue with yourself to no end about whether or not director Jonas Åkerlund has made a subversive slam against trying to find human connection when our own baggage shuts us off from the world, or if he's delivered a pat, mawkish ending that doesn't fit with previous moments of derision towards sentiment.  Rather than leave your head spinning, Small Apartments just leaves your head aching. Franklin Franklin (Matt Lucas) lives alone in a crappy apartment in Los Angeles.  He enjoys playing an alphorn, dreams of moving to Switzerland, consumes only soda, has no body hair, and spends the majority of his time wearing only tighty-whities.  He's also killed his landlord (Peter Stormare) and, like everything else in his life, it doesn't seem to faze him. »

SXSW '12 Review: 'Small Apartments' Is An Awkward, Entirely Unsatisfying Mixture Of Sweetness And Filth

11 March 2012 2:54 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Swedish filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund used to be the kind of director whose every move was worth following. He started out building buzz for his career by making controversial music videos, helming the sensational, barely-seen "Smack My Bitch Up" clip for Prodigy and, way more successfully, the "Ray of Light" music video for Madonna (a clip that won a record seven prizes at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards). Even his lesser videos (like his Cardigans' "Favorite Game" clip) were compelling and vital compared to most pedestrian and run-of-the-mill music videos. Åkerlund's videos were often defined by a willingness to delve into the scuzzier aspects of life (like the Prodigy video and Metallica's "Turn the Page") – visually his style was slick but also grimy, lit up by garish neon lights and high contrast colorization.

And then… something happened. Or rather nothing happened. While his contemporaries moved into artier fare and critically acclaimed film work, »

10 SXSW Soundtracks To Look Out For Including Scores By Members Of Pearl Jam, Vampire Weekend, Menomena, Tortoise & More

8 March 2012 11:31 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.

And with more and more names who broke out from the pop and rock world -- from veteran composers like Danny Elfman and Clint Mansell to newbies like Trent Reznor and The Chemical Brothers -- moving into composition, »

SXSW preview: 10 buzzy events, from 'Cabin in the Woods' to a conversation with Seth MacFarlane

Part musical festival, part film festival, part tech-head confab, SXSW is a unique event in the pop-culture firmament, bringing massive stars and indie up-and-comers in music, movies, and tech together in the Texas hill country of Austin. Running from March 9-17, the film festival has especially expanded its profile in the last few years: The 2011 SXSW fest featured premieres of Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, the doc Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Source Code, the sci-fi comedy Paul, and the eventually Oscar-winning feature documentary Undefeated.

SXSW Preview: 12 Movies We're Psyched to See

7 March 2012 7:00 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

South by Southwest starts on March 9, and Sundance had better watch its back.

Although Park City's film festival still reigns supreme as America's preeminent independent film event, Austin's SXSW is running a close second. The reason? It's cooler. And we're not talking the temperature.

Unlike Sundance, SXSW is not only a film festival, but it also sidelines as one of the hottest music festivals of the year. And let's face it; Austin's got a lot more going on than Park City. When SXSW isn't in full swing, the city remains a movie lover's haven thanks to the celebrated Alamo Drafthouse, run by indie film's coolest cat, Tim League. Austin also boasts a thriving music scene all year round, and is commonly referred to as the live music capital of the world.

Oh, and the film festival? It falls in line. The past few years have seen SXSW premiere such indie hits as "Tiny Furniture, »

15 Most Anticipated Films Of SXSW 2012: From Will Ferrell In Spanish To The Lost Duplass Bros. Movie & More

While Sundance still gets the headlines, the last few years have seen the film strand of South By Southwest, the Austin, Texas cultural conference, become just as vital to the movie world as Robert Redford's baby. The past few festivals alone witnessed some of the best movies of their respective years debut, from low-budget indies like "The Puffy Chair," "Beeswax," "Tiny Furniture" and "Cold Weather" to more mainstream fare like "I Love You Man," "Adventureland" and "Bridesmaids," to international genre hits like "Kill List," "Attack The Block" and "Monsters."

It's certainly one of the highlights of our cinematic calendar, and there's no reason to think that the 2012 installment, which kicks off on Friday with the world premiere of Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's eagerly anticipated horror-comedy "The Cabin In The Woods," will disappoint. From looking through the program, we could be here all day talking about the films that are piquing our interest, »

Centerpiece slot in Austin, Texas goes to 21 Jump Street, with Johnny Depp in a cameo role, while the closing film is Emmett Malloy's Big Easy Express

The increasingly influential film section of the SXSW festival announced its lineup last night, offering its by-now characteristic mix of low-budget independent features, intrusions from the putatively hip end of Hollywood, and music-inflected documentaries.

The high-profile Centerpiece slot has been given to 21 Jump Street, the new movie version of the 1980s undercover cop series which gave Johnny Depp an early career break. The film has Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as leads, with Depp taking a cameo role. Previous Centerpiece films include Duncan Jones's Source Code, and Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass.

The closing film is the documentary Big Easy Express, directed by music video maker Emmett Malloy, and featuring performances by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Old Crow Medicine Show, and »
