“The Midnight Sky” and “Soul” were the big film winners at the 19th annual Ves Awards, which were presented on Tuesday night by the Visual Effects Society.
George Clooney’s cautionary sci-fi drama “The Midnight Sky” won two awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the Ves category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Winners in the category have gone on to win the Oscar 10 times in the past 18 years, but the last film to do so was “The Jungle Book” in 2017.
The Pixar film “Soul,” which was shortlisted but not nominated for the VFX Oscar, won five awards, the most of any film or television program. In addition to Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature, it won for its animated character, created environment, effects simulation and virtual cinematography.

George Clooney’s existential sci-fi drama, “The Midnight” Sky,” moved a step closer in the VFX Oscar race Tuesday, taking top honors at the 19th annual Ves Awards. The Netflix film (with VFX by Framestore) also earned the model award for the Aether spacecraft. Strangely, though, the unforgettable Ballet of Blood scene, containing simulated zero-g and remarkable liquid simulation, wasn’t even nominated, yet this highlight could prove decisive if “The Midnight Sky” wins the Oscar.
But that’s a big if in this wide open race that also includes Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (which is finally available on the Academy’s online voting portal) and dark horse “Love and Monsters,” with its terrific array of Ray Harryhausen-like creatures. In the last four years, the Ves has only aligned with the Academy once (for “The Jungle Book”). Then again, the Ves nod could be enough to put “The Midnight Sky...

Now that Disney is purchasing 21st Century Fox, here’s what we know: $52.4 billion will change hands, the six-studio system will now be five, and Disney will have a serious arsenal for the 2019 launch of its over-the-top streaming services. Presuming that Disney convinces the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice that the union won’t violate existing antitrust laws, here’s a look at some of the merger’s biggest questions.
What Becomes of Fox’s Leadership?
The Disney/Fox merger comes on the same day that Disney/Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits multiplexes. Who from the Fox motion picture side will go to Disney (vice-chairman Emma Watts?) and who will be free to look for a new job (Fox chairman Stacey Snider?). Disney is happy with studio steward Alan Horn and his team.
With Snider’s ex-Universal president Scott Stuber running movies at Netflix,...

While secrecy is incredibly important on the set of the new Han Solo Star Wars movie, director Ron Howard is still sharing some on-set pics to give fans a tiny glimpse at the long-awaited project.
Taking to twitter on Thursday, Howard shared a short video showing the crew getting ready for a crane shot, and gave a glimpse at a massive green-screen curtain surrounding the perimeter of set -- showing how the film will blend CGI with on-location filming.
"Rehearsing a crane shot as we wait for sundown," the two-time Oscar winner captioned the short clip.

Even as Xavier Dolan has gone from Quebecois wunderkind director to internationally known, award-winning filmmaker, there’s one gig that the occasional actor has never given up: voiceover work. In Quebec, Dolan is known as the French voice for Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” films, and has lent his voice skills to a variety of films including “Inside Out” (as Fear), “The Hunger Games” (as Peeta), “Life Of Pi” (as Pi Patel), and the “Twilight” movies (as Jacob Black).

I’ve listened to many podcasts during the long upstate winter and one of my favorites has been Karina Longworth’s You Must Remember This. It’s billed as a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century. I enjoy it because Longworth spins great yarns, with vivid insights, about Hollywood stars and their careers.
But I think there’s more to why it’s popular and why I enjoy it so much. I’m starting to realize that the inevitable ups and downs of yesteryear’s Hollywood Stars are analogous to the rollercoaster rides that categorize so many of today’s careers.
It’s astounding to hear about how a legendary star’s career might have floundered at one point, only to do a complete 360 as he or she gets cast in a successful blockbuster movie. Thundering successes and crushing failures become the...

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) is showing March 28 - April 27, 2017 in the United Kingdom in the series Fassbinder: The Exploitability of Feelings.By now many will have encountered Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (German: Angst essen Seele auf, 1974) even if they are not hardcore devotees of the director’s oeuvre. Along with his Brd trilogy, Ali stands as one of Fassbinder’s most acclaimed and viewed works. The film follows 60-year-old cleaning woman Emmi (Brigitte Mira) who becomes involved with much younger Moroccan mechanic Ali (El Hedi ben Salem) after one of his friends dares him to dance with her when she walks alone into the bar one rainy evening. Ali has been frequently praised for the moving performances of its leads and for how it so effectively portrays...

– Grasshopper Film has announced the acquisition of all U.S. distribution rights to Michael Almereyda’s new documentary “Escapes,” a dynamic portrait of Hampton Fancher, executive produced by Wes Anderson. “Escapes” will open in theaters this summer followed by a VOD and Home Video release in the fall.
“Escapes” showcases the storytelling talents of Hampton Fancher, flamenco dancer, film and TV actor, and the unlikely producer and screenwriter of the landmark sci-fi classic “Blade Runner,” as well as screenwriter on the upcoming sequel “Blade Runner 2049.” Fancher’s running commentary – with a little help from Philip K. Dick and Ridley Scott – works in concert with extensive archival footage as Fancher relates death-defying escapades from a remarkable life.

If you thought The CW wrangling together four shows into a week-long crossover event was peak superhero TV, you probably won’t make it long into Powerless. Although the show isn’t particularly focused on any caped crusaders or men of steel, its lifeblood and humor thrives when its audience will understand why a Civil War dig on a DC Comics show is kind of funny. In reality, NBC’s new not-a-superhero superhero show means well, and has a few moments of clever comic book tie-in gags, but it’s as effective as a syringe of Joker Anti-Laughter Venom when it comes to the comedy department.
Charm City, a taint on the planet in comparison to Gotham according to Van Wayne (Alan Tudyk), is a place crawling with supervillains causing daily destruction and raining death down upon the innocent – and totally apathetic – citizenry.

Tony Robinson’s revisionist Robin Hood children’s comedy series, out now on limited edition DVD, was a hoot…
In the mid-eighties, my teenage sister amused herself by teaching me to say “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”. Not being a six-year-old well-versed in the rhetorical techniques of social emancipation, I didn’t get it. (I’d seen a flea circus; why mightn’t fish find a use for bikes?) My feminist awakening was obviously going to have to wait.

Disney’s “Moana” (opening November 23rd) boasts several animation breakthroughs: It will be the first major movie ever translated into Tahitian; the teenage heroine (voiced by Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) has no love interest; and, it’s the first CG feature directed by Disney hand-drawn vets John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”).
“Moana” also marks the feature producing debut of Osnat Shurer, who was in charge of the shorts program at Pixar (“Lifted,” “One Man Band,” “Boundin'”), and later jumped to Disney to head development before getting the promotion. However, Musker said her pre-Pixar experience was just as valuable; before she joined the animation house in 2002, she’d served as an independent documentary producer with shoots in India, Tibet, China, Japan, Israel, and Turkey.

The new Westworld TV series feat. Anthony Hopkins comes to Sky Atlantic on the 4th of October, and does not disappoint…
Up until its last half-hour when Yul Brynner’s fearsome robot gunslinger engages relentless pursuit mode, Michael Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld is a romp. Its premise—the android attractions in a high-tech theme park malfunction with deadly consequences—may be nightmarish, but the film is rollicking. There’s a lively bar brawl set to old-timey piano, a cartoonish prison-break, a comedy underdog who appoints himself sheriff… Any blood we see is poster paint red and the brothel scenes now feel as chaste as Sunday school.
HBO’s TV adaptation goes a different route. Devoid of high-jinks, it starts serious and stays that way. This is cerebral sci-fi that asks more complex questions than ‘what if the humanoid attractions in a high-tech theme park malfunctioned with deadly consequences?...

Few questions feel as stale as the following: Is the Disney Princess feminist? It's become profoundly boring to scavenge for an answer, so common is this refrain that arises each holiday season since Peggy Orenstein’s barnstorm of an essay. It will no doubt be a talking point upon the release of Moana later this year. The "Disney Princess" has congealed into a homogenous, lumpen unit of capitalist excess, so much that each character’s particular idiosyncrasies often become obscured in such discussions.Belle, the heroine of Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale’s Beauty and the Beast (1991), is a headstrong bibliophile with a peripatetic mind; she spends the beginning of the film longing to be elsewhere. “There must be more than this provincial life,” she screams in the film’s opening number, which economically introduces us to the townspeople who fawn over her. Belle, voiced by Paige O’Hara, occupies...

Pop some popcorn and get your ducks in a row. The documentary “The Million Dollar Duck” wings its way to Animal Planet to unveil the real drama behind the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, which was a minor subplot in the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film “Fargo.”
The annual contest, which began in 1934 with the aim to raise money for wildlife conservation, pits artists from around the country in a duck-themed paint-off. After a panel of five judges weigh in, a winner is chosen, and with that victory comes prestige, bragging rights and the promise of financial reward.

We humans have been sharing the silver screen with all manner of beasts for as long as movies have existed. But no animal quite manages to capture our hearts and our cameras as much as the good old-fashioned pet dog. Dogs have played major and minor characters in practically every genre, their loyalty and selflessness making them ideal sidekicks and heroes.
Today is National Dog Day, so here at Cineplex we're in full celebration mode. As you might have guessed, we're big on dogs here, so this is undoubtedly one of the most exciting days of the year for us. There are no shortage of amazing, adorable, and impressive dogs in movies, so we obviously had to mention some of our favourites to commemorate the day.
There are far too many movie dogs to include in this list, so...

They cost millions and they’re very, very odd. We take a look at 12 expensive and eccentric Hollywood films from the past 40 years...
The risk-averse nature of filmmaking means that the world’s more maverick and outrageous writers and directors have to make do with relatively low budgets. Nicolas Winding Refn drenched the screen in all kinds of sordid, violent and startling imagery in such films as Only God Forgives and this year’s The Neon Demon, but the combined budget of those probably didn’t even match the catering budget for something like Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Every so often, though, a truly bonkers film slips through the Hollywood studio system - often by accident. From horror sequels to original sci-fi adventures, here are 12 incredibly expensive and gloriously eccentric Hollywood movies from the past 40 years.

Owen Suskind, the star of “Life, Animated,” is one of the more fascinating and endearing documentary subjects you will come across. Owen, who is autistic, was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered an unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. It’s a story that was captured in a book written by Owen’s father Ron, who is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.
When director Roger Ross Williams met the Suskinds he was instantly drawn to the family, but he wasn’t interested in making a documentary that looked backwards and retold their amazing story. Williams wanted to find a way to use the tools of cinema to bring the audience into Owen’s world and allow viewers to relate to him on a very human and emotional level. IndieWire recently interviewed Williams about this process of...

The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. I wasn't too disheartened—my unplanned visit to the Bendix Building had yielded sufficient delights.

"When I think of 'Jaws' I think about courage and stupidity. And I think of both of those things existing underwater." That's a quote from Steven Spielberg on his time directing the 1975 horror classic, which turns 40 this Saturday. Proving that sometimes greatness can spring from unimaginable misery, the film was famously a nightmare to shoot, with numerous production problems including the frequent malfunctioning of "Bruce," the collective name given to the film's trio of animatronic sharks. But don't take my word for it. Below are ten hellish behind-the-scenes straight from the mouths of those involved that will make you wonder how they managed to finish the film at all. 1. This is what happens when you hire a stuntman with no diving experience When husband-and-wife shark experts Ron and Valerie Taylor were commissioned to get footage of actual Great Whites attacking a cage (for the famous Richard Dreyfuss underwater sequence), the...

Disney's "Inside Out" has premiered at Cannes receiving strong reviews (here's ours), and assuring fans of Pixar that the company still has plenty of creative, non-sequel juice in the tank. And while Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, and Phyllis Smith provide the English voices for the film, as is usually the case, for international releases, different celebrities voices are used to deliver the movie in local languages. And for French Quebec, current Cannes jury member, and wunderkind filmmaker Xavier Dolan is lending his voice to the character of Fear (voiced by Hader in the English version). In a new behind-the-scenes featurette (in French), you can watch Dolan perform his lines en francais. It's fun watching him get animated (sorry) for Pixar's movie, and as fans of the filmmaker know, he's long been a go-to voiceover artist in Quebec playing Ron Weasley in the "Harry Potter" films, Tad in "Finding Nemo,...

As a guy who broke into the business during the ‘90s sitcom boom (his early jobs were on “Boy Meets World” and “Friends”), who’s worked extensively on both traditional multi-cam sitcoms and filmed single-cam comedies, and has now worked for both broadcast and cable (with “Cougar Town,” which concludes its run at the end of this month, he’s done both), he can take a global view of the genre in a way many of his contemporaries can’t, and he remains one of the champion talkers among showrunners of comedy or drama. Back in January, we talked about letting...

On the heels of Disney Xd's DuckTales revival, and Netflix bringing back Inspector Gadget and Danger Mouse, we started thinking about other cartoons that could be due for a reboot.
News: DuckTales is Coming Back to TV!
Here's seven animated series we're starting to feel nostalgia for that could give joy to a new generation.
1. Darkwing Duck: The feel of the show isn't that far away from Inspector Gadget, and who doesn't like a masked superhero?
2. Rocko's Modern Life: The humor of this show was pretty sophisticated for a cartoon, giving it an appeal to kids and parents alike.
3. Dexter's Laboratory: If The Powerpuff Girls could get a reboot, surely we should get the chance to see Dexter back in his lab. The brother-sister/odd couple comedy duo of a mad scientist child and his annoying sister Dee Dee is one of the best of all time.
4. Johnny Bravo:...

Warning: The following Q&A contains spoilers from Tuesday’s Parks and Recreation series finale.
Let’s do the time warp again.
That was the mentality of Parks and Recreation‘s writers as they approached the NBC comedy’s super-sized series finale, according to showrunner Mike Schur.
“We had just done this time jump to get from the end of Season 6 to the beginning of Season 7, so it was sitting right there,” Schur says of the show’s final episode, which consisted of multiple flash-forwards into the lives of the Pawnee gang. “We were like, ‘Well, why don’t we just keep jumping through time?...

Welcome to a special edition of our news round-up, this time focusing on three comic book adaptations. The female lead in the Deadpool movie has been cast, the voice actors for Star-Lord/Peter Quill, Drax, Groot, and Rocket have been revealed for Disney Xd's Guardians of the Galaxy animated series (and fans of Boy Meets World and Batman Beyond should be very pleased with the Quill casting), and it's been announced that a Dreadstar TV series is in the works with the creator of the comic book series, Jim Starlin, executive producing and writing the project.
Deadpool: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra from Firefly and Serenity, Homeland, Gotham) will play the female lead in the upcoming Ryan Reynolds-starring Deadpool movie. The name of Baccarin's character has not yet been revealed, so it's unknown if she'll play a character from the Marvel comic book universe.

After spinning wheels with two straight Group Round episodes in which almost nothing happened, "American Idol" may start making some tough cuts tonight.
