Everything You Need to Know About the TV Adaptation of Sweetbitter

Starz, the home of Outlander and The Girlfriend Experience, is developing your next TV obsession: Sweetbitter. The network announced on July 31 that it is working on a half-hour drama adaptation of this 2016 bestselling novel, so here's everything you need to know about the project so far. 1. It's based on a bestselling book. Sweetbitter is based on Stephanie Danler's novel of the same name, which NPR named one of the best books of 2016. The book follows the life of 22-year-old Tess, who moves to New York from Ohio and begins working at a renowned downtown restaurant, which leads her to a life of drugs, alcohol, love, dive bars, and fine dining. 2. It is inspired by Danler's own story. Danler wrote her novel while waitressing at Union Square Care and attending The New School for her Mfa, so she very much drew on her own experiences, though Tess is not a carbon copy of the author.

WGA West President David Goodman: ‘We Will Need Another Strike Threat’

WGA West President David Goodman: ‘We Will Need Another Strike Threat’
Hollywood writers will need to issue an official strike threat in 2020 to get a decent contract, according to the incoming president of the Writers Guild of America West.

David A. Goodman, who will become the new WGA West president on Sept. 18, has told members in recent days that getting a strike authorization is essential to improving on the current three-year master contract, which was hammered out at the last minute on May 1.

Goodman, in his statement to members in the 70-page WGA West election booklet sent out a few days ago, asserts that membership’s 96% support of a strike authorization in April was requisite for the gains in the current deal.

Goodman, the current VP of the guild and an ex-officio member of the negotiating committee, is the only candidate to succeed Howard Rodman. The WGA West nominating committee selected Goodman and another candidate, who withdrew, and no one opted to run by petition.

Starz Developing Series Based on Stephanie Danler’s “Sweetbitter”

Stephanie Danler: Nick Vorderman/Danler’s official site

“Sweetbitter” may be coming to the small screen. A half-hour drama series based on Stephanie Danler’s critically acclaimed 2016 coming-of-age novel is being developed by Starz. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project sparked a multiple-network bidding war.

Named one of NPR’s best books of 2016, Danler’s best-selling debut novel centers on Tess, a 22-year-old who moves to New York City and scores a job working at a buzzy downtown restaurant. She’s soon introduced to “the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars, and fine dining,” THR writes.

Danler penned the script. Stu Zicherman (“The Americans”) has signed on to develop it with her, and both are among the project’s executive producers. Plan B is attached to produce.

“I wanted Tess to reflect the New York experience for a lot of people — you arrive and you’re straight into this bubble, and all that matters is the bubble,” Danler has said. “Your past falls away. It doesn’t matter. You’ve started again.” She explained, “Tess was never me, not really. I hostessed at restaurants when I was 15 years old and managed restaurants in my late 20s. I had seen these girls come into restaurants over and over again, new to the place, wanting temporary work, not planning to stay for long, then ending up staying for years, and Tess was very much this idea of the new girl that I’d seen walking in the door so often.”

It was recently announced that Starz is also developing an untitled fictional drama based on Mariah Carey’s life.

Starz Developing Series Based on Stephanie Danler’s “Sweetbitter” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
