‘Portlandia’: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein Want To Reunite One Day, But Not In a Cheesy Movie — Turn It On Podcast
Portlandia” has successfully skewered modern relationships, pop culture and well-meaning misguided characters over the course of eight seasons. But looking back, Carrie Brownstein admits that she cringes at a few older sketches that don’t necessarily hold up.

In particular, Fred Armisen’s characters make references early in the show’s run to Netflix — but the mail-order DVDs, not the streaming service. “That’s one thing that bothers me,” Brownstein said. “You’re apt to make something that becomes dated because of technology. You’re not immune to it. But I hate it so much!”

Still, for a show that is filmed months in advance and can’t be timely, “Portlandia” has mostly managed to be in the zeitgeist. Think about the sketch years ago about spoiler alerts (which has become even more relevant in this Peak TV age) or the infamous Colin the chicken sketch, which took the idea

‘The Detour’: Natalie Zea Got Advice from David Duchovny on Making Her Directorial Debut (Inside a Fat Suit)

‘The Detour’: Natalie Zea Got Advice from David Duchovny on Making Her Directorial Debut (Inside a Fat Suit)
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “The Detour” Season 3 Episode 4, “The Goal.”]

The first scene that Natalie Zea ever directed for TV was the restaurant karaoke sequence from Tuesday night’s episode of “The Detour.” If two Broadway vets (Laura Benanti and Gideon Glick) singing “Almost Paradise” to Jason Jones’ Nate sounds like a tame scene description, know that it would still probably be one of the wildest scenes on most other TV comedies. For Zea, it was far from a simple first assignment (and not just because of the 360-degree camera move at the end when Nate and Zea’s character Robin reunite).

“That was my first scene that I directed. I was awful,” Zea told IndieWire with a laugh. “You have a lot to prove. It was feelings that I haven’t felt in a while. I’ve been acting for 20 years and when I walk onto a set, even when it’s a new show,

Natalie Zea on Directing ‘The Detour,’ David Duchovny’s Advice and Female Filmmaker Friday

Natalie Zea has been a working actress for almost two and half decades, starring on such dramas as “Passions,” “Dirty Sexy Money” and “Justified,” as well as comedies including “White Famous” and “The Detour.” But for the first time, she has sat down in the director’s chair to helm an episode of television.

“Actresses, if they’re smart, are hyper-aware of their having an expiration date, and I want to stay in the business,” Zea tells Variety. “And the only real way to guarantee-ish that is to get behind the camera. We’re not all Helen Mirren.”

It had been in her “back of mind” for a few years to think about directing, so when she booked the role of Robin Parker in “The Detour” three years ago, she saw an opportunity to make it a reality. “I didn’t ask for anything in the first two seasons,” she says, planning to ask
