Anchor Bay Spits On Your Grave this January

26 December 2010 12:15 PM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Nothing like some extreme horror to spread some Christmas cheer, and news that the remake of Meir Zarchi’s 1978 shock horror I Spit On Your Grave is coming to the UK next month via Anchor Bay, may (or not) offer the perfect antidote to all that fun. Director Steven R. Monroe revisits Zarchi’s cult exploitation classic, with the remake that managed to ignite controversy all over again. To get it’s 18 (Nc-17) certificate a total of 43s had to be cut, due to…Company was required to make a total of seventeen cuts during three separate scenes of sexual violence in order to remove potentially harmful material (in this case, shots of nudity that tend to eroticise sexual violence and shots of humiliation that tend to endorse sexual violence by encouraging viewer complicity in sexual humiliation and rape). Cuts made in accordance with BBFC Guidelines and policy. I Spit On Your Grave »

Finals Week: I Spit on This Movie: Rape in Day of the Woman/I Spit On Your Grave

12 December 2010 3:21 PM, PST | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

That's right, folks! It's Finals Week again, when we post academic articles about horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and action flicks written by our extremely educated staff. All week long you can read these slightly modified but always theory-filled papers and do your best to follow along.

I Spit on This Movie: Rape in Day of the Woman/I Spit On Your Grave by Heidi Martinuzzi

In the recent remake of the 1980 exploitation horror film “I Spit On Your Grave”, some scenes involving the protagonist, Jennifer – a young woman brutally raped by 4 men who seeks a violent and bloody revenge – were written out because the director felt that it was unrealistic that Jennifer would actively seduce each rapist before killing him. Not only did the director feel that taking out this almost insulting aspect of the original movie made his new version more realistic, he felt that it also eliminated the ‘exploitation’ factor from the movie. »

I Spit On Your Grave (2010) Movie Review

1 December 2010 8:57 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Meir Zarchi’s “I Spit on Your Grave” is kind of a funny film to choose to remake, having caused heated debate ever since its release and frequent censoring back in 1978. Whilst on the one hand, the film’s reputation for controversy might well be just as headline-grabbing today, it’s one of the few pieces of extreme exploitation cinema that even many diehard genre fans find it uncomfortable admitting they actually like. This is understandable, given that much of the running revolves around brutal rape scenes, with the film walking a fine line between supposed feminist revenge as per its original title “Day of the Woman”, and gratuitous misogyny dressed up as grindhouse entertainment. Director Steven R. Monroe (“Complacent”, “Storm Cell”) is the man bravely attempting to update and revive the film, running the risk not only of being accused of glamorising violence against women, but of needlessly churning out yet another pointless remake. »

“I Spit On Your Grave” (Film Review)

8 October 2010 10:59 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Remaking I Spit On Your Grave, the notorious 1978 rape-revenge flick (though it didn’t achieve that notoriety till its title was changed from Day Of The Woman two years later) that got lumped in with the slasher trend by the genre’s detractors would seem to be a fool’s errand. The rep of Meir Zarchi’s original rests not on its narrative ingenuity or craft, but on the graphic nature of its sexual violence; could an update made in these more cinematically conservative times have the same crude impact? And if not, what’s the point? »

Exclusive: Sarah Butler Talks I Spit on Your Grave

Dread caught up with Sarah Butler, star of Cinetel Film’s controversial I Spit on Your Grave, a week before the film’s September 29th Hollywood premiere (see our coverage of that here) to chat with her regarding her courageous turn as the survivor of a filmic, yet altogether brutal, gang-rape and the repercussions that follow.

A remake of the 1978 Meir Zarchi-directed film of the same name, the Steven R. Monroe-directed I Spit on Your Grave (review here) is being releasing unrated today (October 8th) in theaters across America courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment, a ballsy move indeed! As written by screenwriter and author Adam Rockoff (Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film), I Spit casts Butler as ‘Jennifer Hills,’ a novelist who rents a lakeside cabin in the deep South in order to concentrate on her literary pursuits and who subsequently and tragically »
