5 November 2012 9:10 AM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: In what marks the first early pilot order to a project pitched this development season, NBC has picked up The Gates, a single-camera comedy pilot from writers Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith, Kapital Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV. The project originally landed at NBC in August with a pilot production commitment after a bidding war, and I hear NBC ordered a pilot off a first draft, which rarely happens in network television. Based on the British comedy of the same name that premiered on Sky Living in August, Gates is an adult ensemble comedy set at the front gates of an elementary school drop-off. It revolves around the parents, the school staff and the 15-minute social minefield they have to navigate at the beginning and end of each school day. CBS Buys Dana Klein Ensemble Comedy

21 September 2012 6:29 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: The Daddy’s Girls gang is back. The team behind last season’s NBC comedy pilot has reunited for a new project, a hybrid comedy, which has landed at CBS with a script deal plus penalty. Titled Friends With Better Lives, the comedy revolves around a group of 35-year-old friends who each think that the other has it better. It is being written/executive produced by Daddy’s Girls writer/exec producer Dana Klein, executive produced by Aaron Kaplan, who also exec produced the NBC pilot, and produced by the same studio, 20th Century Fox TV. I hear Friends alumna Klein, Kaplan and 20th TV liked the experience working together on Daddy’s Girls, which came close to a series order at NBC, and looked to find another project to do together. This marks the 10th broadcast sale for Kaplan this season, including two pilot production commitments, one for »

Cullen Brothers Family Comedy Lands At ABC With Pilot Production Commitment

7 September 2012 12:34 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: An irreverent multi-generational comedy from Robb and Mark Cullen sparked a bidding war among multiple networks. It has just landed at the network that boasts the top family comedy on the air right now, ABC. Like Modern Family, the new single-camera project, titled Safe At Home, hails from 20th Century Fox TV. Safe At Home centers on a strong-willed, divorced, single mother who has to move back home with her salty, former career-minor-league-baseball-playing widower father and raise her son while navigating her new community and situation as she coaches her son’s little league team. In addition to writing, the Cullen brothers are executive producing with Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Mark and Robb Cullen created the praised FX comedy series Lucky as well as the Fox drama Heist. The duo has been focused on features for the past couple of years and wrote the 2010 action comedy Cop Out. »

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, NBC has bought a light drama executive produced by country star Miranda Lambert. The deal brings both halves of country music’s “it” couple to NBC, with Lambert joining her husband, The Voice co-star Blake Shelton, whose relationship with the network played a role in the project landing there. Chad Hodge is set to write the project, which is inspired by Lambert’s experience growing up and centers on a couple who run a highly successful detective agency while also trying to raise two teenagers. Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment, Hodge and Lambert are executive producing with Lambert’s manager, Marion Kraft. The project was set up at ABC Family last year with a different writer. This is an end of an era — after 15 years at Sony TV, comedy writer-producers Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith are moving to 20th Century Fox TV with a two-year overall deal. “They are the consummate showrunners, and they’re also very, very strong writers who are going to attract talent,” 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said. “We expect a big piece of development from them to go out this year and for them to help on one of our series in a big way; we know any of our shows will line up to have them.” The husband-and-wife duo had been at Sony since 1997. They spent six years on the studio’s long-running comedy The King of Queens, which they joined after the pilot as executive story editors, fresh out of graduating from USC’s School of Cinema-Television. They rose to executive producers/showrunners on the hit CBS series, which they steered for three seasons, »
