Donnie Yen is De-Iced in First Trailer for Fantasy/Actioner Iceman

21 May 2013 8:42 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Donnie Yen will soon be seen in Yuen Woo-ping’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” sequel next year, but until then, he’s playing an ancient warrior who is accidentally de-iced in the new movie “Iceman” (not to be confused with the Michael Shannon hitman drama “The Iceman”). Just in time, too, because there’s a bad guy running around modern Hong Kong and he needs to be stopped. Like, pronto! Check out the first trailer for “Iceman”, which has zero dialogue, so you don’t have to worry about English subtitles for all those Chinese dialogue, cause there ain’t none. For a gist of the plot, here ya go: In 2013, funded by a mysterious rich, squire Tang digs up three ancient icemen from the outskirt of China. They are Ying (Donnie Yen), Niehu (Yu Kang) & Sao (Wang Baoqiang). He transports the icemen to Hong Kong for further study but »

Donnie Yen Cometh In Iceman 3D. Watch The Trailer Now!

21 May 2013 8:30 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Donnie Yen is all thawed out and ready to go in Iceman 3D, the Law Wing Cheong directed remake of the 1989 Clarence Fok directed The Iceman Cometh, with Yen playing the role of a Ming era warrior frozen on a mountaintop only to be thawed out in modern times. Action ensues.Production has been quite difficult on this one with principal photography running well behind schedule and the budget ballooning to double the original amount but the first trailer has arrived and the footage they've got on camera is certainly attractive enough, although fans will note the extensive use of the tight shots and rapid edits that often denote the heavy presence of body doubles. Take a look at the trailer below....

"7 Samurai," "Vengeance" Remakes Heat Up?

20 May 2013 11:11 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Contemporary Hollywood remakes of Park chan-wook’s "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance" and Akira Kuroswa's cinematic classic "Seven Samurai" are both gaining steam.

Silver Reel and Lotus Entertainment are teaming with di Bonaventura Pictures and Cj Entertainment to bring the new take on 'Vengeance' to the screen.

Brian Tucker ("Broken City") was attached as scribe some time ago, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing.

Meanwhile, Harvey Weinstein has reportedly "had a conversation" with actor Donnie Yen and director and martial arts choreography legend Yuen Wo Ping about the "Seven Samurai" remake in development at TWC.

Cannes 2013: Donnie Yen Interview – Iceman Cometh, A Sequel and Turning Down The Expendables

19 May 2013 2:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

With thirty years working in film and a number of highly successful martial arts movies under his belt Donnie Yen has been at various times an actor, director, producer, action choreographer and even medal winning martial artist.

Yen was in Cannes to promote his upcoming film Iceman Cometh 3D and I was lucky enough to speak to him about the film, action filmmaking and much more.

On the Iceman Cometh.

It’s obviously quite straightforward. It’s basically a story about this Ming Dynasty warrior travelling  years later to modern Hong Kong. It’s a very straightforward, entertaining action film. Of course, with romance and a sense of humour. A black sense of humour. So hopefully this film can bring a lot of joy and entertainment to audiences.

On 3D and the challenges faced in shooting in 3D.

It’s my second 3D movie. I’ve done a movie called »

Rurouni Kenshin (2012) Movie Review

19 May 2013 1:29 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Watsuki Nobuhiro’s “Rurouni Kenshin” has long been one of the most loved manga in Japan, telling the story of the wandering pacifist samurai of the title and his many adventures. Known as “Samurai X” in the West, the manga has already been adapted across multiple formats, including a hugely popular anime series, several OVAs and audio books. Finally, it arrives on the big screen courtesy of writer Fujii Kiyomi (“L Change the World”) and director Otomo Keishi (“Taiga drama Ryomaden”) as a big budget live action film, with young television actor Sato Takeru (“Rookies”) as Kenshin. Also bringing the well-known roles from the comic to life are Takei Emi (“For Love’s Sake”), Aoi Yu (“Patisserie Coin de rue”) and Kagawa Teruyuki (“Kaiji 2”), with action choreography by Tanigaki Kenji, who previously worked with the one and only Donnie Yen on the likes of “Spl”, “Flashpoint” and “Wu Xia”. Cannes: Before Action Starts On ‘Crouching Tiger 2,’ Harvey Weinstein Woos Donnie Yen And Yuen Wo Ping For ‘Seven Samurai’

19 May 2013 8:08 AM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Right after my Deadline Hollywood colleague Pete Hammond moderated a Weinstein Company panel this morning on Big Eyes, the film that Tim Burton will direct with Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams, I moderated another on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny, a sequel to the 2000 film that won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, and at the time became the biggest grossing foreign language film in America. I was joined onstage by producer David Thwaites, Harvey Weinstein, actor Donnie Yen, director and martial arts choreography legend Yuen Wo Ping (he handled action choreography of the Ang Lee-directed original Crouching Tiger). Also with us was exec producer Anthony Wong, who translated for the director. Michelle Yeoh was seen on a screen, after being set to reprise her role. Scripted by John Fusco, this film is derived from Iron Knight, Silver Vase, the fifth book in the Wang Dulu’s Crane Iron Pentalogy. »

Weinstein, Yen Talk ‘Crouching Tiger’ Sequel

19 May 2013 5:07 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Getting one phone call from Harvey Weinstein would be enough for many actors to commit to a role. But it took one phone call a week, for several weeks, to get martial arts star Donnie Yen to commit to the Weinstein Co.‘s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” sequel.

“At first I was a little hesitant,” Yen said during a discussion with Weinstein and director Yuen Woo-Ping at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday.

The kung-fu expert, who has shown off his skills in pics like Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” and the “Iron Monkey” films, praised the original 2000 “Crouching Tiger,” and said he had concerns about how to improve on it. Eventually, though, Yen said that “as an actor,” he couldn’t pass up the challenge.

Weinstein’s love of Asian cinema and martial arts is well-known, and he talked about being influenced by Akira Kurosawa.

Anant Singh, Yuen Wo Ping, Harvey Weinstein, Rooney Mara, (unknown), Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz, Michael B. Jordan, Naomie Harris and Ryan Coogler at the Majestic Hotel This evening I attended the Weinstein Co.'s Cannes presentation in which they revealed information, footage and trailers from all of their upcoming 2013 releases, both domestically and abroad. For the most part what was shown has already been seen such as trailers for The Butler, August: Osage County, The Grandmaster and Fruitvale Station plus a clip from Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, all of which I have included below in this recap of events, which did also feature some new footage from a selection of films. Weinstein himself seemed most proud of the upcoming, Shane Salerno-directed portrait of J.D. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – The Green Destiny Will Star Donnie Yen And Michelle Yeoh

17 May 2013 4:15 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Nobody’s a bigger fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon than me. Ang Lee’s fine directing mixed with a strong cast and a truly engaging story resulted in one of the finest martial arts films of all time. Does it need a sequel? I’d normally say no, unless Ang Lee was attached to direct. Then again, I’m not Harvey Weinstein. Ever since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – The Green Destiny was announced and greenlit, there have been rumors about some of the original cast returning for a second bout. As it turns out, Michelle Yeoh will be reprising her role as Yu Shu Lien, while Donnie Yen (Ip Man) will play the character of Silent Wolf.

Alas, the great Ang Lee won’t be returning. The man just won an Academy Award for Best Director — at this point, he’s probably got bigger fish to fry. Yuen Woo Ping, »
