To celebrate the completion of principal photography on Quentin Lee's supernatural thriller The Unbidden, we have a gorgeously dark set of new, exclusive stills to share. The film follows "four best friends who get together for a spirit-settling seance the night before Halloween and are intruded upon by a young man who claims that one of them is his mother," according to the official synopsis. The intruder then "unravels a past crime that has been haunting them for two decades." The Asian-American cast includes Tamlyn Tomita, Julia Nickson, Amy Hill, Elizabeth Sung, Jason Yee, Karin Anna Cheung, Kimberley Rose-Wolter, and Michelle Krusiec, with newcomers Akemi Look and Hayden Szeto rounding out the ensemble. The film is the sixth feature by Lee, who has made dramas...

Although there rarely seems to be much (if any) overlap between the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars when it comes to the winners, it's always nice to see some of these movies getting recognition when they will likely be ignored by the Academy. Silver Linings Playbook does not seem to have much of a shot at winning anything tonight (with the exception of Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress), but it dominated the competition last night winning 4 out of the 5 categories it was nominated in including Best Picture. Jennifer Lawrence also won for Best Female Lead and David O. Russell won Best Director and Best Screenplay. Other winners included The Sessions co-stars John Hawkes for Best Male Lead and Helen Hunt for Best Supporting Female, while Matthew McConaughey won Best Supporting Male for his performance in Magic Mike. Amour took home the Best Foreign Film Award and The Invisible War won Best Documentary.

And just like that, awards season is upon us. I'd like to say that it's a time of year when your chances of seeing a great film in theatres are significantly increased, but I don't know if that's entirely true. Either way, the Independent Spirit Awards kicked things off today with their full list of nominations, which could potentially influence Oscar chances for some filmmakers and actors. I'm guessing that at least a few of these folks will be in the running. David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom led the way with 5 nominations each, while Beasts of the Southern Wild and Keep the Lights On both earned 4. It's awesome to see Matthew McConaughey recognized for both Magic Mike and Killer Joe, but a little disappointing that The Imposter was overlooked for Best Documentary. What do you think of this year's Spirit Award nominees?...

Directed by David Ren

What happens when you clone a clone?
I used to think it would be some kind Brundlefly would spring forth and leave an indelible stamp on my psyche but then again, I hadn’t seen The Girl from the Naked Eye yet. A clone of a clone, apparently, limps around for a bit, tries to shock you then eventually. David Ren’s martial arts/film noir film follows Jake (Jason Yee, who also co-wrote) a man working for a pimp to pay off his gambling debts which is just as dull as it sounds. Jake befriends one of the prostitutes, Sandy, and seeks to avenge her death after she’s murdered. Shot and written in the style of Sin City with the fighting of a Hong Kong action film, it’s a truly odd combination that accomplishes neither objective.

The Girl From the Naked Eye (2012) Former martial arts competitor turned action star Jason Yee beats the shit out of a lot of people, shoots a few dozen more, and generally makes a menace of himself in director David Ren’s “The Girl from the Naked Eye”, a moderately budgeted action movie dressed up as a noir Detective story. The hero is one Jake, a driver for an escort service who falls (and vice versa) for his latest charge, the sweet Sandy (Samantha Streets). After Sandy is murdered, Jake makes it his mission to find her killer (or killers). This pits him against his buddy Simon (Ron Yuan, who also doubles as the film’s fight choreographer) and Simon’s slimy cop partner Frank (former Brit middleweight Gary Stretch, though disappointingly he never throws down). After a slow first 20 minutes, “The Girl from the Naked Eye” picks up noticeably, offering...

Title: The Girl From the Naked Eye Director: David Ren Starring: Jason Yee, Ron Yuan, Samantha Streets, Sasha Grey, Dominique Swain, Gary Stretch A pulpy, low-budget slice of film noir cross-pollinated with a martial arts flick, the curiously titled “The Girl From the Naked Eye” will certainly win no awards for great originality, but nonetheless serves as a stylish and engaging little vehicle for the surly charms of star Jason Yee, as well as its filmmaking team. The sophomore effort of director David Ren (“Shanghai Kiss”), the movie is a case of style over substance, to be sure, but boy is that style impressive on what must have been a shoestring budget. In the early days of noir filmmaking, even when a book was the source of the story, the films were made with a genuine sense of danger. Noir was still a new genre, and we didn’t exactly quite know the rules yet. That led to filmmakers essentially writing, shooting and performing what they knew, from the dangerous bar down the street, to the dame with whom they shouldn’t have trifled, to the backroom brawls that had the stench of sweat, desperation, and bourbon. It’s a cliché to point out that yesterday’s filmmakers actually lived life, but it’s true -- the internet hadn’t yet been invented.
It’s a broad and blind accusation to suggest that director David Ren, the man behind “The Girl From The Naked Eye,” hasn’t lived this sort of life. However, it’s clear from this modern pulp pastiche that...

Most independent filmmakers know their place in the world of cinema, and that’s comedy/dramas about uninteresting and aimless twenty-somethings. I kid. But the point is a lack of a real budget precludes the option of spectacle and name stars. Most indies stick with drama and comedy because both can be accomplished with little more than actors, a location and a script. Genre films by contrast, including action, science fiction and fantasy, are usually far out of reach of the independents. But there’s a lot to be said for ambition, persistence and talent. Jake (Jason Yee) works as a security guard/driver for strippers performing escort services out of The Naked Eye club. When he discovers one of the dancers murdered on his living room floor he sets out to find the man responsible and will stop at nothing until he does. Flashbacks of Jake’s introduction to and time spent with Sandy (Samantha Streets) build...

Fans of the action films are often attracted to the genre for the extensive number of fights and stunts included in the narrative. But the new action romance thriller ‘The Girl from the Naked Eye’ takes a risky, but unique, chance by mixing a love story between the main characters with a stimulating vengeance tale after they’re separated by murder. ‘The Girl from the Naked Eye,’ which was directed by David Ren, follows Jake (played by Jason Yee), an ex-gambler who is trying to pay off a debt by working as a driver for The Naked Eye. Actor/writer Jason Yee shares a fight scene from "The Girl From the Naked Eye," one that pays tribute to one of his favorite scenes in "Old Boy." The film stars Yee as a man hell bent on finding the killer of a high-class escort he was entrusted to care for. Yee, a martial arts expert, did all of his own stunts and helped choreograph the fight scenes. "The Girl From the Naked Eye" opens at select AMC theaters this Friday, June 15. __________________________________ When I first saw the hallway fight scene in the Korean film, "Old Boy," I was intrigued by the simplicity of the single master shot and the fight choreography. But what really struck me was the raw emotion that came out in that scene. We wanted to do a scene like that, but with complicated fight choreography that can only be done by highly trained professionals -- yet...

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. For those who think that the best martial arts films are the ones that star actual martial artists, I present to you two films that defy this categorization: Dark Assassin (2006) and The Fifth Commandment (2008). I wasn’t even going to bother reviewing these two films, but after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries on each DVD, I found out that much effort and perseverance were involved in getting these films made. So I thought I would at least offer these films some recognition even though I won’t have many good things to say about them. However, discussing these films might be of some interest. And with the recent release of Ninja Assassin, I thought there might be an interest in assassin movies. These...
