Breaking Bad star to join David Tennant in Broadchurch Us

News Louisa Mellor 19 Nov 2013 - 08:28

Gracepoint, the Us remake of Broadchurch, is to star Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn and the redoubtable Jacki Weaver...

Here's some casting nobody can balk at: the tremendous Jacki Weaver (Animal KingdomSilver Linings Playbook) and Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn (Skyler White) are to join David Tennant in Gracepoint, which is the new moniker Broadchurch is going by over in the Us.

Gunn has some large shoes (or should we say, orange cagoule) to fill in the role of Detective Ellie Miller, which Olivia Colman memorably acted all over like the pro she is in the original series. The same, it has to be said, goes for Weaver, who will be playing the role Pauline Quirke made her own as caravan-dwelling dog-owning, Susan Wright.

David Tennant, it goes without saying, will be playing the David Tennant role of Detective Alec Hardy (well, it'd

Anna Gunn and Jacki Weaver Join Fox’s Broadchurch Remake Gracepoint

The casting continues on Fox’s remake of the excellent (and devastating) UK drama series Broadchurch. David Tennant (Doctor Who) reprises his lead role from the UK series in Gracepoint as an experienced detective who travels to the titular American small town to help solve the murder of a young boy, and now Fox has announced that Emmy winning Breaking Bad actress Anna Gunn and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver have joined the cast of the “event series.” Gunn will be playing Detective Ellie Miller, a happily married wife and mother who is forced to work her first murder case alongside Tennant’s prickly outsider. The role was played wonderfully by Olivia Coleman in Broadchurch, but I can see Gunn knocking this part out of the park. Additionally, Weaver will play Susan Wright, a mysterious woman who lives in her Rv. This was another pivotal role in the UK series and Weaver feels like solid casting.

Anna Gunn And Jacki Weaver Join ‘Broadchurch’ Remake

While we have been a bit reluctant about Fox’s Broadchurch remake, we might just be warming up to the idea now we know who will be joining David Tennant. It was announced today that Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn and double Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver has signed up to co-star in Gracepoint.

Anna Gunn will be stepping in Olivia Colman’s shoes and playing Ellie Miller. In case you missed the ITV crime show (and if you did – What?) Detective Ellie Miller is a happily married wife and mother who finds herself in the running of getting a promotion, but instead it goes to an outsider (Tennant). There is no time to be angry, as the pair have to solve a murder case together, and Ellie finds herself looking at the suspects in her hometown. It has also been revealed that Jacki Weaver will be playing Susan Wright, originally played by Pauline Quirke.

Gunn, Weaver Join "Broadchurch" Remake

Skyler White herself, "Breaking Bad" actress Anna Gunn, is coming back to television. Gunn is set to star opposite David Tennant in "Gracepoint," the U.S. adaptation of acclaimed U.K. limited series murder mystery "Broadchurch".

Set in the sleepy seaside town of Gracepoint, the story deals with the tragic death of a young boy who appears to have been murdered. Investigations into the death lead to the various dark secrets of the townspeople coming to light.

Gunn steps into the female lead role of police detective Ellie Miller, played by Olivia Colman in the original. Tennant essentially reprises his role in the remake of the outsider police detective who takes Ellie's promotion. The pair lead the investigation.

Oscar winner Jacki Weaver will step into Pauline Quirke's role of Susan Wright, the glowering and mysterious woman who lives in the local Rv park with only her dog to keep her company.

As for Weaver, she'll play Susan Wright, a character played by

'Broadchurch' finale: Danny Latimer's killer revealed

In the previous episode of "Broadchurch," Susan Wright -- the suspicious-acting woman who had Danny Latimer's skateboard in her trailer -- revealed under questioning that her late husband had abused their daughters without her knowledge.

DS Ellie Miller later said of Susan something to the effect of, "How the heck could she not have known what was going on in her own home?" If that line set off alarm bells, you weren't alone -- and Wednesday's (Sept. 25) final episode confirmed them in about as wrenching a way as you can imagine.

The killer's identity -- Ellie's husband, Joe -- is revealed rather early on in the episode. But the whodunit aspect of "Broadchurch" was never the entire point -- rather it was what Danny's killing did to the people who lived in the town. And the fallout from Joe's unmasking had wide and deep ripples.

Joe, we learn, had essentially

Broadchurch DVD review

Broadchurch is the immensely popular, and some might say surprise, hit TV drama of the year so far with David Tennant and Olivia Colman in the starring roles against a backdrop of gorgeous Dorset scenery and a puzzling death of a young boy in a quiet seaside community.

Enter grizzled detective Di Alex Hardy (David Tennant) who seems to have unfortunately chosen Broadchurch as a quiet escape from a stain on his reputation and is teamed with local copper and friend of the dead boy’s family Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) who is determined to find the killer but equally keen to protect her friends in the community from the harsh manner and questions of her new colleague.

As the case goes on Di Hardy roots out some of the secrets that the inhabitants of Broadchurch have been carrying with them and in some cases their unwillingness to be more
