The 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2010

31 December 2009 9:38 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

For many people, a new year means a time for new habits, resolutions, and fresh starts.  For myself though, it’s always been about one thing and one thing only:  365 days of brand-new films!

And of course, Hollywood being Hollywood, there’s the usual litany of sequels, super-hero spectacle, remakes, and state-of-the-art Hollywood summer craziness filled with all manner of digital monsters and explosions.  But there’s also new films from Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and - most intriguing of all - a ballet thriller from Darren Aronofsky.  Come on, admit it - you know you got excited when you heard the words “ballet thriller!”  All that, and we also see the return of Michael Douglas in his seminal role as Gordon Gecko.

Read on after the jump for my list of the ten films that - for reasons both good and bad - I’m most looking forward to seeing in the new year. »

Secret Identity: Captain America, Conan And More Casting We Want To See In 2010

31 December 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

It's out with the old and in with the new as 2009 transitions into 2010 in just a few short hours. There's no question that it's been a fantastic, crazy and occasionally tumultuous year for comic book fans thanks to film releases like "Watchmen" and compelling news stories regarding "Iron Man 2," "Green Lantern" and others.

But all of that is in the past now. It's time to look forward at what we can expect in the new year. There are still many announced comic book movies and television shows that lack official casting, but with some of these projects heading into production in 2010, it's only a matter of time before the secrets are revealed.

While we all have our own favorite franchises and characters, these are the five heroes and villains I'm dying to see cast in 2010.

Julian Roman's Top 10 Films of 2009

30 December 2009 10:51 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A new decade begins on a high note as we look back at an exceptional year in film. 3D and the IMAX format have finally taken hold. What was once gimmickry and the sole realm of documentaries are now exciting cinematic experiences for audiences of all ages. Leading the charge was James Cameron's visionary Avatar. The long awaited science fiction epic surpassed considerable expectations with its breathtaking special effects and scope. But while the colossus reins supreme, smaller films like Lee Daniels Precious and Jason Reitman's Up in the Air resonated with their captivating performances. I am optimistic for 2010, but wonder where the hell are the flying cars and hover boards?Top Ten Films of 2009#1 Avatar There are not enough superlatives to describe this film. Writer/Director James Cameron has once again taken us to a new frontier. Jake Sully's (Sam Worthington) odyssey on Pandora is akin to Dances with Wolves in space. »

More Presenters Added to 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards

30 December 2009 9:00 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Nicole Kidman, Steven Spielberg and Sam Worthington have just been added to the list of presenters for this January’s 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards.  They join previously announced presenters Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Colin Farrell, Matthew Fox, Julia Roberts and Mickey Rourke.  The show, hosted by the always funny Ricky Gervais, will be broadcast live on Sunday, January 17th on NBC (5 to 8 pm Pt, 8 to 11 pm Et).  More after the jump:

While I zero respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press as they always seem to vote for the studio that wined and dined them the best, I always watch the show as it’s loaded with big name presenters and they serve alcohol all night.  Even though the show is tame nowadays as everyone watches what they say, in the past you never knew what might happen as half the crowd was drunk and then getting on stage to accept an award. »

Mad Man's Dinner with 2009: The List to End All Lists

Mad Man Dan And His Dinner With 2009

Editor’s Note:  To be honest, I’m not a list guy.  I think they’re trite, unimaginative, and when I look at the other horror sites, their lists are all generally the same.  Sure, there may be some movement between what’s #3 on one site’s list and #4 on another, but must I see the same 10 or 20 flicks from the last year or decade, best or worst, ad nauseam?  So when Mike and I sat down a few weeks back, we agreed not to do the same, humdrum lists.

And then Mad Man Dan came into the picture.

Bringing his uniquely psychotic perspective to the whole idea of lists, then blowing up that idea and subverting it brought a fresh angle to lists.  And so I proudly present Mad Man Dan Price’s Dinner with 2009.  We don’t censor the Mad Man »

Sam Worthington is Flash Gordon. Okay, Probably Not.

30 December 2009 9:42 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Sam Worthington in talks for the “Flash Gordon” movie? Okay, probably not, but one of the gazillion gossip sites out there says they heard things, and since that’s apparently good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. Just remember that if it turns out to be complete and utter bullshit, it’s not our fault. But if it does end up being true, keep in mind that we were on top of it! In any case, according to Hollyscoop, here’s the word on the street — and of course by “street” I mean the coffee shops of L.A.: Sources say Sam is up against the sexy Ryan Reynolds for the leading role in the sci-fi flick. “If he gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero,” dished one Hollywood insider. “Right now it’s between Sam, Ryan Reynolds »

Worthington to Play Flash Gordon?

As if his starring roles in Avatar and the upcoming remake Clash of the Titans wasn't enough, Sam Worthington is all set to star in another film -- at least that's what the rumors say. According to HollyScoop, there's word going around that Worthington may be up for the lead role in a Flash Gordon remake. Of course, it might be worth taking this news with a (large) grain of salt. The source that HollyScoop spoke to also said that Worthington is up against Ryan "I'm already playing Deadpool and Green Lantern" Reynolds. “If he gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero,” dished one Hollywood insider. “Right now it’s between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground.” If you're interested in reading more about the rumors, head over to HollyScoop. »

James McAvoy To Play James Bond Creator, Ian Fleming?

30 December 2009 7:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In the vein of Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds, Wanted star James McAvoy is one in-demand actor. Adding to the list of projects he’s attached to – beyond Wanted 2 and I’m with Cancer – we now get word that McAvoy is attached to a biopic of James Bond creator, Ian Fleming.

Pajiba provides us with the story they’ve gotten from their source, The Hollywood Cog. The project, currently being referred to as simply Ian Fleming, is being developed by both Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films. McAvoy is attached to the lead role, and the film will reportedly focus specifically on the years of Fleming’s life in which he got the inspiration to create the James Bond character.

Fleming’s life is prime material for a biopic: Years before creating Bond, Fleming struggled under the shadow of his family name (his father was a member of parliament, and »

Casting Standouts: 'Avatar'

30 December 2009 5:02 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

For veteran casting director Margery Simkin ("Marley & Me," "Top Gun"), working on "Avatar"—James Cameron's "14 years in the dreaming, four years in the making" follow-up to his megahit "Titanic"—presented brand-new challenges, in particular the fact that the film comprised 60 percent motion-capture sequences and 40 percent live-action sequences. Simkin had to find people who could convincingly express emotion through a yet-to-be-created language, and she had to do so under a massive veil of secrecy. Not one actor was attached when she took over the film's casting in 2007, when the late, great Mali Finn stepped down due to illness. Simkin's greatest discovery on this film was a complete unknown, Sam Worthington, recommended by her Australian casting colleague Christine King."Forever people will think that we cast him because of 'Terminator: Salvation,' but it had nothing to do with it," says Simkin. "This was way before. When I saw his tape, »

Eagle Of The Ninth Shots = Sword and Sandals and Channing Tatum

30 December 2009 5:02 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It’s been hard, up until now, not to compare the careers (and acting styles, for the most part) of Channing Tatum and Sam Worthington.  They both broke onto the scene about the same time.  They both have that same amount of charisma (okay Worthington pushes ahead here and there).  They are both jettisoning themselves into any, big budget film role Hollywood has to offer.

However, looking at these new still of The Eagle Of The Ninth, the new medieval Roman actioner directed by The Last King Of Scotland helmer Kevin Macdonald, some comparisons to another actor may be in order.  Ladies and gentlemen, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, I give you mid-Hulk transformation stills of Josh Hartnett (and one of Jamie Bell).

All kidding aside, this looks like it could either be truly epic or it could be another walk in the lazy, Roman park like what we have seen »
