'Avatar' has new player with Ribisi

Giovanni Ribisi is landing on a new planet.

The actor has signed on to James Cameron's 3-D feature "Avatar", playing a passive-aggressive character named Selfridge in the Fox film about a band of humans pitted against a distant planet's indigenous inhabitants.

He joins a cast that includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez.

The $190 million "Avatar" is set for release May 22, 2009, and features a blend of live-action photography and new virtual photorealistic production techniques invented by Cameron's team. The film is in production in Los Angeles and next month starts production in New Zealand at Weta Digital.

Cameron is writing and directing as well as producing with Jon Landau and Lightstorm Entertainment.

Emma Watts is overseeing for the studio.

The film marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since the Oscar-winning blockbuster "Titanic" in 1997.

Ribisi ("Lost in Translation") is repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Stewart Brookman of Hansen Jacobson Teller Hoberman Newman Warren & Richman. »

The film features six computer-generated actors known as "synthespians" and is in production in Los Angeles and next month starts production in New Zealand at Weta Digital.

Truly Indie is a program for filmmakers seeking self-distribution at theaters nationwide and a small Australian film from the director of Romper Stomper is choosing just that route. NEW YORK -- Wagner/Cuban Cos.' Truly Indie and Union Station Media will domestically distribute Geoffrey Wright's updated film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Set in the contemporary crime world of Melbourne, Australia, Macbeth features Sam Worthington, star of James Cameron's upcoming 3-D sci-fi film Avatar, as the title character. The film closely follows the original text, infusing it with modern-day sex scenes and violence.

The unrated feature will debut June 15 in Seattle, followed by openings throughout August in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Austin.

Macbeth won 2006 Australian Film Institute Awards for costume design and production design.

Aussie director Wright's credits include Romper Stomper, starring Russell Crowe, and Cherry Falls.

Truly Indie is a program for filmmakers seeking self-distribution at theaters nationwide. The distribution deal was negotiated by Union Station, Arclight, the film’s producer Martin Fabinyi and Truly Indie executive director Kelly Sanders. »
