You didn't need to be a Tommy Cooper fan to find this take on his life compelling
The Untold Tommy Cooper (Channel 4) was – if you will forgive descent into seasonal cliche for a moment – a little cracker. Eschewing the usual method of repackaging of just-about-known-but-generally-ignored facts that traditionally make up an "untold story" of a star, it used recently unearthed letters, audiotapes, interview footage and, above all, his agent Miff Ferrie's meticulous records to reconstruct its subject in the round.
The talent – and you don't have to find Cooper funny in order to see it – was beautiful. A lumbering giant of a man with a featherlight touch – for a trick, a fumble or a punchline – seemingly effortlessly snatching victory from the jaws of defeat from the jaws of victory.
The turmoil behind the talent was less so. The film calmly and unflinchingly detailed the story of his alcoholism, which »

The BBC One mini-series, starring the likes of Ray Winstone and Gillian Anderson, averaged 6.59m (25.6%) in the 9pm hour. Great Expectations was too strong for ITV1's one-off Laurence Fox drama Fast Freddie, The Widow and Me, which appealed to 3.9m (15.6%) and 216k (1.2%) on +1. Serial dramas EastEnders and Holby City, airing before the watershed, paced BBC One's primetime victory. Susan Boyle documentary An Unlikely Superstar (ITV1) and Channel 4's repeat of My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas tied with 1.99m (8.3%) in the 8pm hour. From the misty churchyard to forlorn Satis House, this Great Expectations was wonderful
A small boy runs, frightened, from a lonely churchyard, across a flat, marshy landscape. He starts to cross a little wooden bridge over a muddy creek … Suddenly a big hand appears from underneath the bridge, grabs the boy's legs, brings him down. The boy shouts out.
"Come 'ere, shut up," growls the escaped convict, to whom the big hand belongs. "You scream again and I'll cut your throat, d'you understand?" Then he turns to the camera and taps his forehead. "Hold on, the latest live odds are coming up on your screen now." And, sure enough, on to the screen the following words are typed: "Pip to get together with Estella in the end: 2/1."
Guess what, that doesn't really happen. Well, the first part does, but not the betting bit. But it kind of happens in my head, »

There have been more than 400 film and TV adaptations so far, and counting, some brilliant, some memorably awful
The opening credits of BBC1's new three-part adaptation of Great Expectations (27-29 December) show a chrysalis cracking open to reveal a pair of trembling wings. A few seconds later this delicate emergence is replaced on screen by the escaped convict Magwitch (Ray Winstone) erupting from the stagnant waters of the Essex marshes. Covered in blood and slime, he is at once the monster of nightmares and a huge misshapen baby gasping its first breath.
In a single sequence, the director Brian Kirk gets to the heart of Dickens's novel as a fable of rebirth and renewal. Together with Sarah Phelps, the screenwriter, he has created a world in which characters are forever seeking to transform themselves – or each other. A spookily young Miss Havisham (Gillian Anderson), still cocooned in her tatty wedding dress, »

Hang around in Calderdale, and you could well end up in a movie. Our Hebden Bridge outpost, Jill Robinson, reels off some the greats
Last year saw the premiere at the Hebden Bridge Picture House of the film A Calder Valley Christmas, with local people (including this outpost of the Northerner) queuing around the block to be among the first to see it. Directed by local film-maker Nick Wilding, the piece combines archive material, reminiscences about bad winters, carols, poems, scenes of local Mummers and other traditions, and monologues by the incomparable Ian Dewhirst MBE. (He actually lives in Keighley, but he tells such a good tale that he is often invited over the hill.) Like all the best films, there is an accompanying song, Christmas in Hebden Bridge, performed by children from local schools.
However, this is by no means the only film to have used the dramatic natural »

Following the BBC's gripping Bleak House, it's no surprise that this cracking three-parter has drawn in names. The big draw is Ray Winstone as a terrifying Magwitch. Gillian Anderson plays Miss Havisham not as creepy but as a depressed and manipulative woman of uncertain age: floaty, possibly heavily-medicated. It's Sean Dooley who really nails it, though. As Pip's guardian Joe Gargery (often played as a henpecked simpleton), he brings out a good man of humanity and principle.
Unreservedly recommended: script excellent, acting powerful, direction cheerless. Set the box, or box the set. John Robinson

There's much talk of who will blow whom off the screen over the coming season of peace, love and understanding, but who can honestly summon the enthusiasm for a "battle" between Strictly and Corrie when we have perfectly adequate digital recording or catch-up facilities to watch neither at our own convenience?
No. The only question is, what's worth watching? Actually, lots, as it turns out. I was impatient with the bizarre turns of fortune in Downton Abbey earlier this year, but it seems that whoever's in charge is back off the drugs with a gripping two-hour Christmas night special, which manages to be funny (cue Maggie Smith, baffled in the presence of a nutcracker) without being laughable. The story carries on where it left off, but with the corpses of flu and war »
