6.30pm Et: Can last year's Emmy's be topped? Now there's a phrase you don't hear about the Us TV industry's annual gong-a-thon very often. In fact, mostly never. But in 2010, after years of shambolic broadcasts, badly briefed presenters, over-runs and idiosyncratic awards choices, the organisers finally got it together.
In an article headlined "Were these the best Emmy's ever?" New York magazine described last year's event as the "least excruciating televised awards show since the 2009 Oscars". Which is quite something for New York magazine.

On a day that has seen a lot of painful (and painfully dull) rehashing of political angst against former Vice President Dick Cheney, pegged to his upcoming autobiography, Ed Schultz's Cheney panel managed to squeeze out an entertaining wrinkle or two. On Thursday night's The Ed Show, Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio struggled to keep Cheney's villainy on par with Dubya's, while Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead was suitably disturbed by the idea of Cheney as Bush's binky. »

While Maddow strafes such favorite conservative targets as the billionaire Koch brothers ("They're doing a good job of marginalizing all criticism of them as hysterical"), her sharp tongue doesn't spare Democrats.
