The top 25 secret agents in film

27 August 2015 6:43 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Ahead of American Ultra's arrival in UK cinemas, here's our pick of the 25 finest, sneakiest secret agents in film...

Operatives. Spies. Moles. Infiltrators. Secret agents go by many names. In fact, Britain's national security agency doesn't even call them agents - they're covert human intelligence sources, or simply “officers".

Whatever we choose to call them, secret agents lead necessarily furtive and obscure lives - so obscure that most of what we know about them is defined by what we've seen and read in books and movies.

During the Cold War, the image of the secret agent as a well-groomed sophisticate in a suit proliferated all over the world, and even in the high-tech landscape of the 21st century, that image still stands - just look at such movies as Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and, of course, the Bond franchise. But secret agents can come in many other guises, »

19 August 2015 2:05 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...

Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.

Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

Akira

One of Hollywood's most on and off projects, the current state of the live action Akira remake is that it's back in the works. Marco J Ramirez, the showrunner for season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil show, has been hired to pen a screenplay. Warner Bros is still backing the film, »

'Point Break' Remake Trailer Throws a Ton Of Money Out Of A Plane

27 May 2015 1:30 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

As much as people complain about an endless chain of remakes, there are some stories that are so good they deserve to be retold in new ways. For example, there's Romeo and Juliet, about two star-crossed lovers from different families who get caught up in a history they wish they could escape. Or there's Point Break, about a bank robber and the cop who is brought in to take him down, only to learn that they are two sides of the same coin. Point Break has basically already been remade in the form of The Fast And The Furious, and we can all agree that worked out pretty great in the long run, but now it's officially getting a redo thanks to Equilibrium writer Kurt Wimmer and Invincible director Ericson Core. This new version stars Edgar Ramirez as the criminal Bodhi...

Johnny Utah doesn’t fear death in first trailer for Point Break remake

27 May 2015 9:13 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Nostalgia meets extreme sports in the first trailer for Point Break, this year’s remake of the Kathryn Bigelow-directed original starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

As in the 1991 original, Point Break follows FBI agent Johnny Utah – this time played by Luke Bracey (G.I. Joe Retaliation) – as he goes undercover, snowboarding, rock-climbing, parachuting, and of course surfing his way through his latest investigation alongside suspect Bodhi (Zero Dark Thirty’s Édgar Ramírez).

Pushing familiar themes of brotherhood, betrayal, and… explosions, the remake's trailer feels like the original had a baby with The Fast and the Furious franchise – and you know what? We’re kind of okay with that.

Point Break is directed by Ericson Core, written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium), and also stars Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) and Ray Winstone (The Departed). It plays in Cineplex theatres on December 25.

'Point Break' Remake First Pictures, Bracey and Ramirez are Utah and Bodhi

22 April 2015 8:06 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Apparently the first look at the upcoming Point Break remake from director Ericson Core was shown during CinemaCon down in Las Vegas yesterday and with that comes the first looks at Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez in the film playing FBI agent Johnny Utah and extreme sports enthusiast and criminal Bodhi respectively. The duo are playing roles made popular by Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 film, and for many this remake is completely unnecessary, but it's set to arrive on December 25 nonetheless. One week after Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, which is to say... we'll see how this turns out. This updated version will follow a similar premise as the first as a young FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Bracey), infiltrates a cunning team of thrill seeking elite athletes, led by the charismatic Bodhi (Ramirez). The remake nobody asked for is coming this Christmas with Point Break, a new approach to the 1991 action thriller of the same name that was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starred Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. The film has become an action classic, but that's not stopping Hollywood from trying to cash in on its legacy with a new version starring Edgar Ramirez (Deliver Us from Evil) and Luke Bracey (The November Man). Now the first photos have been unveiled after some footage was shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday, and at least now we know that Ramirez surfs and Bracey runs. That's exciting, right? Here's our first look at Ericson Core's remake of Point Break from Warner Bros. Pictures: Point Break is directed by Ericson Core (Invincible), who is also the director of photography on the film written by Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Street Kings, Total Recall). A young FBI agent, »

‘Point Break’ Reboot Moved to Christmas 2015

3 February 2015 5:20 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros. has moved its reboot of “Point Break” back nearly five months from July 31 to Christmas — essentially swapping dates with Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible 5.”

The action-thriller, starring Edgar Ramirez (pictured above) and Luke Bracey, is directed by Ericson Core from Kurt Wimmer’s screenplay. Ramirez plays the part portrayed by Patrick Swayze in the 1991 original, while Bracey plays Johnny Utah, originally acted by Keanu Reeves.

Warner Bros. made the move a week after Paramount decided to move “Mission: Impossible 5″ forward from Christmas to July 31.

Alcon Entertainment began developing the project in 2011, when it acquired rights to the property with plans to set the reboot in the world of extreme sports. Alcon co-chairman Andrew Kosove told Variety that the new date should be attractive to moviegoers — even with Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” launching a week before on Dec. 18.

14 movie sequels stuck in development hell

12 January 2015 3:04 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As Twins sequel Triplets gets delayed, here are other big name sequels struggling to get going - from Top Gun 2 to Die Hard 6...

We started this website back in 2007, and since then, the names of some sequels seem to come up with reasonable regularity, albeit with no sign of the film itself. And in the time we've been going, yet more names have added themselves to the list of follow-ups that are seemingly stuck in development hell.

With the new Ghostbusters film set to escape and become a real thing in the next year or two, here's just a sample of the other projects struggling to get off the ground (with one or two edging closer to a greenlight than others...)
