Cervical Cancer, Yvette Wilson's Condition, Explained

15 June 2012 11:29 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Yvette Wilson, who was an actress on "Moesha" and "The Parkers," has died at age 48 of cervical cancer, according to news reports.

E! Online reported that Wilson had stage 4 cervical cancer, and also experienced kidney failure and had to have kidney transplants.

Cervical cancer begins when cells in the cervix (which comprises the lower portion of the uterus in a woman) mutate, and grow at a rate faster than healthy cells, without dying off, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms of the disease may include bleeding after having sex or between periods, having a foul-smelling bloody discharge and having pain during sex.

The severity of the disease is defined by stages. Wilson had stage 4 cervical cancer, which means she was diagnosed with the most advanced form and the cancer had spread to other parts of the body, according to the National Cancer Institute.

'Moesha,' 'The Parkers' Star Loses Battle To Cervical Cancer

15 June 2012 9:30 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Fans and former cast mates have taken to Twitter to mourn the loss of actress Yvette Wilson who played the role of Andell Wilkerson on Upn's "Moesha" and its spinoff, "The Parkers."

Wilson, 48, reportedly lost her battle with cervical cancer and kidney disease on Thursday, following a desperate plea last month for funds to cover her mounting medical bills.

Wilson's co-star Shar Jackson announced the news via Twitter last night, following requests for prayers for her "sister and best friend."

According to 2008 figures by the Cdc, African-American women are more likely to die from cervical cancer than any other group, despite coming in second, to Hispanic women, in overall incidence.

In April, a study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference in Chicago offered a possible explanation for this disparity -- that black women have more trouble clearing Hpv, the virus that causes the disease.
