Jason Statham Set to Go Up Against A Prehistoric Shark in 'Meg'

After nearly 20 years in development, seems this is finally really happening.

According to Deadline, action star Jason Statham is in negotiations to star in Meg, the adaptation based on Steve Alten’s novel Meg: A Novel Of Deep Terror.

The site also says that Warner Bros Pictures is moving forward in conjunction with China-based Gravity, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing along with Belle Avery and Colin Wilson

The story centers around a 60-foot, 40-ton prehistoric great white shark called Carcharodon Megalodon or simply Meg, who is killing swimmers along the China coast.

Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) is directing the film from a screenplay being written by Dean Georgaris.

Well, this is certainly fun news. After years of struggling to make it to the big screen, it sounds like Meg is finally moving forward with one of the few men who can actually fist fight a giant shark. Yes, action icon Jason Statham is in negotiations to take on the lead in this long-gestating thriller.

Meg has been lingering in development Hell for decades. But it sounds like Warner Bros. is finally ready to move on the project, with Jon Turteltaub in the director's seat. He takes over for Eli Roth, who bailed on the movie earlier this year after being attached for only a very short time. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is producing the movie in conduction with China-based company Gravity, along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Belle Avery and Colin Wilson.

Meg is based on the best-selling book by Steve Alten. Dean Georgaris is writing the script. »

Jason Statham will star in the Warner Bros. shark action movie “Meg,” sources confirmed to Variety.

National Treasure” director Jon Turteltaub is helming.

Dean Georgaris is writing the screenplay based on Steve Alten’s novel “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.”

Belle Avery will produce the pic through her banner Apelles Entertainment, and Colin Wilson is producing through Maeday Productions.

Gerald Molen, Wayne Wei Jiang and Randy Greenberg are exec producing. Gravity Pictures will co-produce and co-finance the movie and distribute it in China.

The book revolves around two men who band together to fight an ancient shark threatening the California coast. The Megaladon, considered one of the largest and most powerful predators in history, can reach a length of 60 feet.

This time around the shark will be terrorizing the coast of China rather than California — a change that helped in bringing on Gravity Pictures as a co-financier.

Action star Jason Statham has signed on to star in "Meg," the long in the works prehistoric shark creature feature at Warner Bros. Pictures and Chinese company Gravity.

Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure") is directing the film in which the antagonist is the Carcharodon Megalodon, the 70-foot, 40-ton prehistoric kin to the great white shark.

The film has been in the works for about two decades, beginning life as a book by Steve Alten. Turteltaub and Jamie Vanderbilt penned the latest draft of the script, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Colin Wilson will produce.

Watch: The Joker Joins the Fun in New ‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer

A new “Suicide Squad” trailer made its debut at Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards Sunday night, showing the villainous crew in action once again.

MTV Generation Award recipient Will Smith, with fellow “Suicide Squad” stars Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne, introduced the clip, which features previously unreleased footage of the supervillains, at the event, hosted by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.

The extended online clip shows quite a bit of previously unaired footage, including Deadshot agitating El Diablo, the Joker getting in on the action and Harley Quinn… being Harley Quinn.

“I’m known to be quite vexing,” she says. “I’m just warning you.”

The figure of Batman can also be briefly seen — however, just a quick glimpse of the Batsuit.

Flagship Entertainment unveils debut slate

Flagship Entertainment, a joint venture between Warner Bros, China Media Capital (Cmc) and Tvb, has unveiled its debut slate, including projects from Hong Kong filmmakers Peter Chan, Wong Jing and Stephen Fung.

Launched last year, the Hong Kong-based joint venture aims to produce a slate of Chinese-language films, including global tentpoles, for Chinese and international distribution. The first titles will be released in 2016. 

Peter Chan is set to direct drama Murder Of The Husband – about a woman whose suffering gave rise to the revolution of women’s social rights in China – and will also partner with Brett Ratner to produce romance Beautiful Coma, chronicling a love that transcends every challenge.

Wong Jing will direct action comedy In Love With The Thieves, starring Andy Lau, Huang Xiaoming and Shen Teng, while Stephen Fung is attached to action romance The Adventurers, starring Feng Shaofeng in a story about an overseas treasure hunt.

Many horror fans cheered when it was revealed that Eli Roth had come aboard to direct the big screen adaptation of the best selling novel Meg. But now, the mastermind behind neo-horror classics such as Cabin Fever and Hostel has quietly bail. Warner Bros. is eyeing National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub to take over the long-gestating project.

Warner Bros. is moving forward on the thriller in conjunction with China-based Gravity, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing. The film has been twenty-years in the making, with the latest script coming from Dean Georgaris, best known for his work on such varied fare as Life of Pi, The Crazies remake and the comedy What Happens in Vegas. Belle Avery and Colin Wilson are also on as co-producers.

Gravity holds the rights to release the movie in China. The story follows a giant prehistoric shark that has taken to eating swimmers off the China coast. »

The new Suicide Squad teaser trailer has landed. The promo comes courtesy of Warner Bros. and features a brand new look at the upcoming DC villains flick, which hits cinemas in August. The teaser, like that very strange Star Trek Beyond trailer we saw a month or so ago, is backed by a popular musical track, but by using the stunning tones of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, WB have seemingly hit the nail directly on the head.
