Rock of Ages trailer: Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin wig out 80s-style

14 December 2011 9:11 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

We can't decide if Adam Shankman's star-studded hair-metal romp is a delight or a damp mullet. What do you think?

Dim the lights, turn the smoke machine up to Epic, for here – strutting across the internet with bouffant backcombed and leather trousers a-squeaking – comes the trailer for Adam Shankman's Rock of Ages.

Based on the popular stage musical of the same name and set in a glossy facsimile of late 80s La, Shankman's film pitches two young wannabes – chumpy bus boy Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) and transplanted small-town girl Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) – into seedy rock dive the Bourbon Rooms. The club is threatened by property developers and owner Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin) needs hoary rock legend Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) to do one last gig to keep the good times rolling.

This, says the trailer, is not a film for those who spell Rock without an exclamation mark. »

8 December 2011 1:00 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Willow Smith is stranded on earth when a fireball falls from the sky in her music video for "Fireball", a single taken from her upcoming album "Knees & Elbows". Donning an outer space-themed attire, she is strutting down the street while singing the intro, "Since I landed here, I go phone up Obama/ Shook the world up, now I caused a little drama."

"Fireball" music video was released exclusively during the December 7 episode of Bet's "106 & Park". In the Hype Williams-directed music video, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith is joined by Nicki Minaj who dresses up in pink ensemble. The "Super Bass" hitmaker wears a knee length dress and fur boots.

"Hey yo Willow, didn't I just see you in China?/ You're real major even though you're a minor/ Your daddy keep ya in designer/ You're gully, gully, gully, yeah you're gully, kinda/ Okay, I'm the street fighter, »

Watch: Willow Smith and Nicki Minaj ignite on 'Fireball'

7 December 2011 6:00 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It’s safe to say that lack of confidence will not ever be an issue with little Willow Smith, the spawn of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.  Really, what other 11-year old has the cojones to start her video in the same style as the legendary opening credits from “Star Wars?” The Hype Williams-directed “Fireball” featuring, of course, Nicki Minaj, debuted on B.E.T.’s “”106th and Park” on Wednesday.  Smith continues on in her Rihanna mini-me mode in her spoken/sung delivery, although this song, to keep it in “Star Wars” parlance, is from a galaxy far far away from “Whip My Hair” and »

Votd: Chaos Cinema – The Decline and Fall of Action Filmmaking

31 August 2011 8:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We're all familiar with it. Some call it MTV editing. Others blame it on Add. It's the fast cutting, fast moving camera aesthetic that's become prevalent in Hollywood blockbusters over the past decade and change. In a new video essay published on Indiewire's Press Play page, Los Angeles scholar and filmmaker Matthias Stork gives it another name: Chaos Cinema. His two part, 18 minute dissection of this new type of cinema highlights how action films have evolved, or devolved depending on your point of view, by using examples from the works of Paul Greengrass, Tony Scott, John Woo, Michael Bay, Christopher Nolan and John Frankenheimer, just to name a few. Watch the videos, read what he has to say, and discuss it after the jump. Thanks to Press Play [1] for these videos. Here's part one. Chaos Cinema Part 1 [2] from Matthias Stork [3] on Vimeo [4]. Kim Kardashian's Racy Music Video Leaks

30 August 2011 1:01 PM, PDT | TooFab | See recent TooFab news »

A video that Kim Kardashian isn't proud of is making the rounds, and no, it's not the one you think. Earlier this year, the reality TV star tried to branch out into the music industry. She recorded a single called "Jam (Turn It Up)" and even shot a music video. The video never was released ... until now. Click the yellow "Play Video" button to watch a 55-second snippet of Kim in all her Auto-Tuned glory: The video, directed by Hype Williams, features a greased-up Kim crawling and writhing on the floor. There are extreme close-ups of famous behind -- four in the first 22 seconds alone (yes, one blogger counted )! Of course nowadays, Kim finds such shots "really rude" -- even though the gallery below proves otherwise: The leak comes at the same time an anonymous buyer wants to remove her infamous sex tape with Ray J off the market and »

Kim Kardashian unreleased music video snippet appears online

29 August 2011 4:37 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Back in March, Kim Kardashian debuted her pop single "Jam (Turn It Up)."  And back in March, nobody cared.  This is mostly likely due to the indisputable fact that Kim Kardashian is better seen and not heard.

So good news!  A snippet from the never-before-released music video has appeared online!  Directed by music video legend Hype Williams, the clip features everything a 14-year-old boy would have on their Kim Kardashian checkist: she's wet, she's rolling around and she's filmed almost exclusively from behind.

It remains to be seen if the 50 second clip is enough to generate interest in the song but if history has taught us anything, no.  It won't.

Poll: Best Video Of The 2000s

12 August 2011 7:40 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The ‘90s shattered the conventions of the music video. Suddenly ever musician wanted their video to be the biggest and splashiest of all. Budgets roared to insane levels – Michael and Janet Jackson’s 1995 video for "Scream" is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive ever, costing around $7 million – and video directors became stars themselves (hello, Hype Williams, David Fincher and Mark Romanek).

So by the 00s, a video had to be on point to get much attention at the MTV Video Music Awards. The concept had to be solid, the costumes needed to be out of this world and the special effects had to be through the roof. You want a brothel featuring some of the biggest pop starlets in the world? You got it – Christina, Pink, Mya and Lil Kim are waiting. Care to see Rihanna control water with her bare hands? Just don’t forget your “Umbrella. »

Music Video Director Hype Williams Will Get Into Bed With Joe Eszterhas' 'Lust'

While folks like Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Sophie Muller, Chris Milk and Floria Sigismondi are among the names mentioned as top-tier music video directors, it's often overlooked how much of an impression (mostly) hip hop director Hype Williams has made on the genre. Though some of his contemporaries may have had more innovative approaches, Williams work is often bright, expressive and immediate, finding the pulse and heart of the artists and songs he's worked with. Kanye West is a frequent collaborator and Williams' extensive CV also boasts names like Wu-Tang Clan, Jay-z, Coldplay, Missy Elliot, Beyonce, No Doubt, Dr. Dre,… »

Hype Williams Chosen To Direct Joe Eszterhas' Lust

8 August 2011 7:48 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There's really no telling if a music video director can successfully transfer into feature films. While some absolutely incredible talents have cut their teeth in the medium, including David Fincher, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, and Michel Gondry, there are cases like Samuel Bayer, McG, and Francis Lawrence who, perhaps, should have continued making videos under four minutes. Hype Williams is fairly untested in this arena. While the director has more than a couple videos under his belt, his only previous attempt at a feature was the 1998 film Belly, which wasn't exactly the most successful debut on the books. Now he's apparently ready to give it another go. Variety has learned that Williams is now attached to direct Lust, the new film from Basic Instinct writer Joe Eszterhas. First announced back in April, the plot is described as "Fatal Attraction in reverse," the story is about a man married to a »

Hype Williams to Direct Joe Eszterhas-Penned Sexual Thriller Lust

Music video veteran Hype Williams made his feature debut with 1998's Belly, a stylized noir-esque crime pic starring rappers Dmx and Nas that had its problems but nevertheless presaged a decent future in film for Williams. Somehow, though, Williams never followed up his first film with additional features, with project after project falling through. Until now, as Variety reports that the director has signed on to helm Lust, a "Fatal Attraction in reverse" penned by Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct, Showgirls). »

Hype Williams to Direct Sexual Thriller Lust Written by Joe Eszterhas

8 August 2011 4:54 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We reported back in April that screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who famously penned Basic Instinct, Flashdance and Showgirls, was returning to Hollywood with a new sexual thriller entitled Lust. Now Variety reports that Hype Williams will be taking the helm. Williams is most famous for directing music videos, but he made his feature debut with 1998’s Belly. Lust tells the story of a 30-year-old man who marries an older Miami magazine publisher. The wife is seduced by a younger playboy, who videotapes the two having sex which threatens to destroy the wife’s life. Not much else is known, but it's described as Basic Instinct in reverse. Judging from Eszterhas' previous material, and the logline for Lust, we're probably in for some borderline uncomfortable sex-scenes. Jack Olsen rewrote some scenes set in New York and Miami, and the film is said to have a big music-centric piece that will most likely »
