First Official Stills of Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins and Pink In Sex Addict Drama ‘Thanks For Sharing’

16 May 2012 9:20 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Last year we got what seemed to be the definitive serious sex addict drama with Steve McQueen‘s Shame, highlighted by a stirring performance from Michael Fassbender. On the other side of things, The Kids Are All Right co-writer Stuart Blumberg seems to be taking a lighter approach for his directorial debut Thanks For Sharing.

Leading the ensemble is Mark Ruffalo, who is coming off his hit role in The Avengers. He is joined by Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins, Joely Richardson, Patrick Fugit, Josh Gad, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Alecia Moore (or, Pink), the dramedy centers on “a group of unlikely friends brought together through their shared determination to recover from sex addiction as they try to forge meaningful relationships for the first time in their lives.” Check out the first stills and an early poster below.

Update: Removed at the request of the producers.

Oscar-nominated Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right) makes his directorial debut with Thanks for Sharing, and with Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo, and Tim Robbins topping the cast, it’s definitely got the makings of a great film.

Eight new images have made their way online, featuring Paltrow, Ruffalo, Robbins, and some of the great supporting cast, which includes Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), Josh Gad (Love and Other Drugs), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (The Wire), and Pink (you know who Pink is).

Co-written by Blumberg and Matt Winston (making his writing debut), the plot looks a little something like this:

Review: Tony Kaye's Detachment Paints a Grim Picture of Public Education

6 March 2012 11:13 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Detachment 2012 100 minutes Rated R Opens in limited release on March 16th Most of the ideas in Tony Kaye's Detachment are not revolutionary, especially not to anyone who has followed the last thirty years of debate regarding the public education system in America (Jonathan Kozel's many works of nonfiction come to mind).  And while the story is told in a style that sometimes veers to art-house cliche (sepia-toned flashbacks, first-person testimonial to an unseen listener, hand-held claustrophobia, etc.), the picture is in the end devastating via its almost objective presentation of the issues at hand.  Sure, Kaye is saying, we know that public schools are underfunded, understaffed and stuck with various federal mandates and (worst of all, argues Kaye) a deluge of unmotivated students whose parents only take an interest when it comes to rebutting disciplinary measures. But told through the eyes of a substitute teacher who is far more »

Review: Predisposed (Sundance 2012)

Plot: A piano prodigy (Jesse Eisenberg) must escort his junkie mother (Melissa Leo) to rehab, in time for him to hit his audition for a prestigious college. Two low-level drug dealers (Tracy Morgan & Isiah Whitlock Jr.) complicate matters. Review: Predisposed is certainly a step up for the closing night slot at the Sundance Film Festival. A difficult slot to fill, two years ago, it was done away with entirely to make way for an encore screening of The Kids Are All Right, and »

In Predisposed, Penny (Melissa Leo) and her son Eli (Jesse Eisenberg) find getting into rehab is much harder than anyone would expect. When the uninsured mother of two is told by a rehab counselor that they might be able to find her a bed if she comes back with urine that tests positive for drugs, she and Eli go on a wild goose chase to get her one last high. Along the way, they meet up with her drug dealer Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan) and his brother Black (Isiah Whitlock Jr.), who decide that Eli and his Spanish-speaking skills are very handy in their dealings with their supplier. On top of all this, Eli has a very important piano audition that could change his life -- because he's not the only one teetering on the edge. We sat down with co-writers and directors Phil Dorling...

Domestic Trailer for Tony Kaye’s ‘Detachment,’ Starring Adrien Brody

13 January 2012 6:32 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Best known for his hard-hitting debut feature, 1998′s American History X, music video director-turned-filmmaker Tony Kaye has only made a small number of films since his auspicious first.  The 2006 black and white abortion documentary Lake of Fire garnered high praise from critics, while Black Water Transit — a Katrina drama starring Laurence Fishburne — never even got a theatrical release.

His next film, Detachment, which premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, is an examination of this country’s educational system told through the eyes of  a vagabond substitute teacher — played by Adrien Brody — who avoids getting attached to his students. The trailer has some signature Kaye stylistic moves, and the cinematography looks fantastic. In any other directors hands this kind of a movie could play out like a bad Dangerous Minds remake, but hopefully Kaye‘s intensity hasn’t dulled and Detachment will deliver a compelling modern look at our seriously flawed education system. »
