The son of an English wigmaker, he began his Hollywood career in 1921. Few actors had photogenically perfect features. Makeup often obliterated the best facial bone structure. Westmore developed cosmetics that would look the same under diverse lighting conditions and with different types of film.

Interred at Forest Lawn (Glendale), Glendale, California, USA, in the Garden of Remembrance, plot #1751.
Because of the danger from his electrically run lathes and saws, Westmore had his hands insured.
At his house in Beverly Hills, he built a doghouse designed as a miniature Swiss chalet of two stories, connected by a stairway, and complete with cornices and a shingled roof.
Father of daughters Norma Elizabeth and the younger Virginia Paula, previous to his marriage to Margaret Donovan.
The Westmores were awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Motion Pictures at 1645 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
