William H. Macy on Defending Emmy Rossum's Fight for Equal Pay on Shameless: 'It's a No-Brainer'
When Emmy Rossum threatened to leave Shameless if she didn’t receive pay equal to that of her costar William H. Macy, he was nothing but supportive.

“It’s a no-brainer,” the actor recently told People Now. “It’s just sort of obvious. Emmy is in most of the scenes, she works harder than anybody else, she’s a brilliant actress. She’s the glue of the cast.”

Last year, Rossum, 31, made headlines when she refused to sign on for the Showtime drama’s eighth season unless she was offered more than Macy to make up for the seven years she was paid significantly less.

Showtime renews Shameless for season 9

Shameless has been renewed by Showtime for a ninth season.

Season 8 of the show premiered last Sunday and now Showtime has made the decision to renew its longest running and highest rated series. The entire cast of Shameless, including William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, is set to return.

Last Sunday’s premiere drew in 1.86 million Live+Same Day viewers, which is the second highest rated premiere for the show.

Shameless is Showtime’s most watched and highest rated programme, so it’s no surprise to see the network make the decision.

“As challenging as it can be for any show simply to maintain viewers in the current TV landscape, Shameless is adding them in droves,” Showtime Networks president and CEO David Nevins said. “But it’s no mystery why. The series’ reputation for rich and resonant characters and for deep – and deeply twisted – comedy has drawn not only faithful longtime viewers,
