Producer-Director Brooke Kennedy on Challenges of Moving From ‘The Good Wife’ to ‘The Good Fight’

Brooke Kennedy has produced hundreds of hours of television, much of it in New York City. But of all her experiences in the trenches, nothing quite compares to directing the first episode of “The Good Fight” at a Park Avenue location on the night of Nov. 8, as Donald Trump pulled off his stunning political upset in the presidential race.

As Christine Baranski and Delroy Lindo got to work on a particularly emotional scene in “The Good Wife” spinoff — which premieres Sunday on CBS All Access — Kennedy looked out and saw the darkness around the edges of the office-building set flecked with the blue-ish glow of smartphone screens.

“Everyone in the crew was on their phones, and you could start to read it on everybody’s face,” Kennedy recalls.

Denzel Washington is exhausting as a sanitation worker in this dense adaptation of a play about racial tension

This dense, declamatory drama about race and domestic tensions in a blue-collar African American family in 1950s Pittsburgh has more than a little in common with John Wells’s 2013 melodrama August: Osage County. Both received Oscar nominations. Both are so firmly rooted in their stage origins that any concession to cinema seems almost like an afterthought. And both are dominated by the kind of huge, air-sucking indulgence of a performance that is so unavoidable, so bombastic that people mistake it for quality.

Like Meryl Streep in Osage County, Denzel Washington is exhausting in the central role, playing garrulous sanitation worker Troy. It’s a role that requires him to spew out an almost continual torrent of mannered dialogue, which might work on stage but reeks of artifice in the cinema. It’s »
