Can a show recover from the loss of its creator?

22 May 2012 4:58 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Community fans have been left reeling by the firing of the show's creator Dan Harmon. But is there any hope for the cult sitcom, or do shows inevitably decline when their creators depart?

The news that Dan Harmon, creator of cult sitcom Community, had been fired last week caused shockwaves. Programmes lose their writers and producers all the time – but few are as important to the show as Harmon. Just as it's hard to imagine Mad Men without Matthew Weiner or The Sopranos missing David Chase, so it seems as though NBC and Sony – respectively the network and production company behind the show – have failed to understand that Harmon's idiosyncratic brain is central to Community's success.

The obscure references were all his, along with the format risks and multiple timelines: Community was adored by its fans because of Harmon's vision. Its difficult to imagine that the unfortunate David Guarascio and Moses Port, »

Will 'Cougar Town' Find a New Zipcode on TBS?

If ABC decides to jettison "Cougar Town" the struggling comedy could find an afterlife on cable. The show's future is uncertain following a ratings drop in its third season. Talks are reportedly ongoing between TBS and ABC Studios, which produces the sitcom, about a potential move.If the move does happen, "Cougar Town" wouldn't be the first network show to find new life on cable. NBC's "Southland" was picked up by TNT after the Peacock Network canceled it three years ago. The cop drama, which is produced by John Wells, was recently renewed for a fifth season by Turner.Initially, though, "Southland" wasn't a TNT drama. The cable net originally bought the episodes that had aired on NBC and the unaired second season. It gave the drama a try out before spending millions to restart production.Network switches aren't any guarantee of renewed success. In 2005, according to TheWrap, the cable net Syfy bought. »

Inside NBC's Golden Age

New York -- After being fired as NBC entertainment president toward the end of the "must see TV" period in 1998, Warren Littlefield packed photos, papers, awards and other memorabilia into a self-storage unit and turned the key.

For 10 years he paid the rent and never stopped by. Finally, on a Saturday afternoon, he unlocked the vault and began combing through the boxes – a process of rediscovery that eventually led to his new book, "Top of the Rock: Inside the Rise and Fall of Must See TV."

Jerry Seinfeld, Kelsey Grammer, Lisa Kudrow, Anthony Edwards and Debra Messing are among more than 50 people who help Littlefield tell inside stories about "Seinfeld," "Friends," "Frasier," "ER," "Will & Grace" and what went on within NBC to make its Thursday-night lineup the most powerful one in television during the 1990s.

TNT has ordered a fifth season of "Southland." The John Wells-produced cop drama will return in February of 2013 with a 10-episode season. Wells had reportedly been seeking a 13-episode order for the show, which has been a rare example of a canceled show being picked up by another network. "Southland" debuted on NBC in the spring of 2009, and was renewed for the following season despite low ratings. Then NBC executives decided they didn't agree with Wells' vision for the show and pulled the plug after six episodes had been shot, but before any had aired. TNT picked up those »

Ben McKenzie's 'exciting' partner switch on 'Southland' [Video]

For Officer Ben Sherman, his whole life was turned in a different direction when he was paired up with new partner Sammy Bryant on the TNT drama series "Southland." For actor Ben McKenzie, who plays Sherman on the show, it also meant no longer working very much with Michael Cudlitz but tons more screentime with Shawn Hatosy.  In a video interview with senior editors Rob Licuria and Chris Beachum, McKenzie explained the change: "Not only did I pass along from my probationary period into being a full-fledged officer, but I also confronted him (Cudlitz) about his drug addiction and literally drove him to the hospital. It was somewhat expected but still very exciting." The raw and authentic police drama has had an interesting TV history. The first season aired on NBC, and the network renewed it for a second season. The show is part of a big development slate at E!, which is doing a bit of rebranding (new tagline: "Pop of culture") and investing in some scripted shows in addition to more reality shows and a talk show starring Whitney Cummings. E! has also ordered a talent competition called "Opening Act" from "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance" producer Nigel Lythgoe.
