14 May 2012 1:29 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.

With only a few shows from last season still sticking around (and none of them hits really), NBC is betting big on comedy this year to sit alongside its football and "The Voice" broadcasts. In fact though its ordered five new dramas, only two of those will be premiering in the Fall with the rest of the schedule filled out with either returning shows or new comedies.

"The Munsters" reboot "Mockingbird Lane" remains in development for a possible mid-season launch. Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen, the most galling of which is the Alaskan-set conspiracy mystery thriller "Midnight Sun" with Julia Stiles and Titus Welliver. Production Begins on Gus Van Sant’s Promised Land Starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski

24 April 2012 1:41 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Focus Features announced today that production has commenced on the drama Promised Land.  The screenplay was written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski, based on a story by Dave Eggers, and the project was poised to be Damon’s directorial debut before scheduling issues forced him to vacate the director’s chair. Damon’s Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant swooped in and swiftly took over directing duties, and now filming has begun.  Focus President Jeb Brody draws some very flattering comparisons when describing the project: “Matt and John’s script is rich in Frank Capra-esque qualities, blending humor and heart while exploring the power of community in this day and age. An actor’s director like Gus will bring forth all the emotions in the story, which is a true passion project for everyone.” In addition to Damon and Krasinski, the cast also includes Frances McDormand, Hal Holbrook, »

'Promised Land' Officially Starts Production, Oil Drilling Plotline Detailed

24 April 2012 12:22 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As "Promised Land" has been moving along, gathering up financing, a director and a cast, the actual plot details have been kept mostly under wraps, with only vague allusions to a Capra-esque tale about two rivals in a small town. In the last few weeks, the filmmakers behind the Kickstarter-funded documentary "FrackNation" posited that the film written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski was going to be an anti-fracking movie (fracking is essentially the process by which water and chemicals are blasted to separate rock layers to extract gas and oil). But of course, the documentarians are making a movie that purports to tell the "truth" about the controversial nature of fracking, so they had an agenda of their own to push, and besides their word, there was no indication that "Promised Land" was going to tackle that topic.

But today, Focus Features announced the film was now in production and along with that news, »

The Week in Spandex – The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Amazing Spider-Man, Man of Steel and… Sabrina?

15 April 2012 11:23 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Our weekly round-up of all the big news stories from the world of movie superheroes…

Well, with The Avengers receiving its world premiere this past Wednesday, Marvel has pretty much dominated the superhero headlines once again, but before we get on to that we’ll start things out this week with The Dark Knight Rises. First up came the rather expected news that – as with Christopher Nolan’s two previous Batman movies – the hugely-anticipated sequel will be rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language”. For us folk here in the UK, expect a 12A rating (and put your hands together and pray that the BBFC don’t impose any cuts on Warner Bros. to avoid a 15 certificate). While that in itself wasn’t overly exciting, Entertainment Weekly went on to bring some joy to Batman fans later in the week with their latest issue. »

Sons Of Anarchy, Season 5: Jimmy Smits, Dangerous Mentor

6 April 2012 11:52 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

A hush is falling over the bloody hamlet of Charming. Jimmy Smits is coming to town. The feature star of many an award-winning series is slated to dominate the approaching Sons of Anarchy Season 5.

Smits’ casting is spot-on for the show’s strategy. He brings with him fistfuls of Emmys, and that fits fine into the FX Networks vision for TV drama: Low-brow characters portrayed with high-caliber writing, direction and talent.

Smits also brings a quality that’s critical to the spirit of Sons of Anarchy. And he’ll do it by portraying a role totally unlike those that earned him bushels of gold statues.

That quality is charisma. The guy’s radioactive with it. Viewership is divided on this fact – I’ve known my fair share of Smits haters – but numbers don’t lie. He’s been the spotlight guest act for several top-rated seasons on top-rated shows: NYPD Blue, »

Blu-ray Review: Ben Affleck’s ‘The Town: Ultimate Collector’s Edition’

14 March 2012 7:34 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s only been a couple of years but Ben Affleck’s “The Town” already feels like more of a modern classic than it did upon its release. There are some elements of the film that still falter for this critic (most of them related to the Affleck-Hall relationship and lack of chemistry within it) although they’ve become nearly overwhelmed by what Does work about this engaging, tight thriller. He’s only made two films (“Gone Baby Gone” before this and this fall’s “Argo” will be his third) but I honestly feel like Ben Affleck will be a better director than an actor (and I’ve always thought him an underrated actor).

Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

My opinion of Affleck the Actor vs. Affleck the Director aside, people Love “The Town.” It’s the kind of movie that I’ve had friends tell me they can re-watch endlessly in its cable airings. »
