Daily Briefing. Cinema Scope 50

20 April 2012 10:43 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Yesterday was all about the Cannes lineup, so we've got quite a bit of news to catch up with today. First and foremost, Cinema Scope has relaunched its site with a healthy selection of pieces from Issue 50, which cinephiles lucky enough to be holding a print copy have been talking about for weeks now. Editor Mark Peranson: "So to commemorate 50 issues, I came up with the silly (not stupid) idea of deciding on the best 50 filmmakers currently working under the age of 50 (or the top, or the greatest — I've spent far too much time pondering this silly adjective). I'm anticipating heaps of criticism for this in the blogosphere, but I hope this leads to a little discussion outside of the pages of this magazine, and provides a snapshot of where cinema finds itself today."

20 of those 50 pieces are online. You'll find, for example, Raya Martin on Carlos Reygadas (and »

Morning Meme: Eddie Cibrian Joins "Rizzoli & Isles," "Glee" Returns With Matt Bomer, and Bruce Weber Goes Full Gay With Abercrombie & Fitch

As The Advocate turns 45 years old, they've put up a hall of fame, from Pat Rocco to Dustin Lance Black and everyone in between. It's a great, brief gay history lesson.

A new way to maim myself – a self balancing unicycle. But it would be great to pick up boys. I know I hit on the cute guy at Bridge Day two years ago on the unicycle with the puppy.

Speaker Boehner has appointed National Organization for Marriage founder and author of the anti-gay Manhattan Declaration Robert George to the Religious Freedom Commission, making him a government employee for the next two years.

Cutie (and equality advocate) Josh Hutcherson has been named Breakthrough Performer of the Year by CinemaCon. That's a bit of an understatement after The Hunger Games.

As disgusted as I am by the unsealed Nom memos that showed how they cynically manipulated entire populations of minorities as they opposed equality, »

Ulu Grosbard, 1929 - 2012

21 March 2012 4:42 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

"Ulu Grosbard, a director whose affinity for naturalistic drama shaped critical successes like the original Broadway production of David Mamet's American Buffalo and the film version of John Gregory Dunne's novel True Confessions, has died in Manhattan," reports Bruce Weber in the New York Times. He was 83. "Mr Grosbard's work was divided evenly between the theater and the movies, and though he had a long career, stretching across nearly half a century, he was highly selective in his projects. Known for his skill in cajoling substantive performances from actors and his unhurried, perfectionist's approach to polishing a script and staging a scene, he worked with distinguished playwrights on Broadway, including Arthur Miller (The Price), Beth Henley (The Wake of Jamey Foster) and Woody Allen (The Floating Light Bulb) and cultivated relationships with revered stars, including Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro and Robert Duvall."

Courtney Robertson’s Nude Photos — Does ‘Bachelor’ Ben Flajnik Know?

7 March 2012 12:28 PM, PST | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Courtney likes to take her clothes off -- she went full nude for 'Bachelor' Ben. But has her fiance seen her nude photo shoot? Courtney Robertson is remembered for taking her clothes off and going skinny dipping with Ben Flajnik on The Bachelor in Puerto Rico. Well, that wasn't the first time the 28-year-old model stripped down to the nude for a public audience. "When Courtney was only 19, she did a nude photo shoot for Abercrombie & Fitch, taken by Bruce Weber," a source tells Star magazine. "She was young and naive, and she was easily impressed by a photographer like Bruce." At the time of the photo shoot, Courtney was just as willing to take her clothes off as she was just months ago on The Bachelor. "Courtney is pretty," photographer Bruce says. "No one at the shoot was shy, because they all looked great naked, they were young." "It »

Kristen Stewart Becomes New Face of Balenciaga's Perfume

13 January 2012 8:54 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Kristen Stewart has been chosen by Balenciaga as a spokesmodel for its newest fragrance which will target women. The on-screen love interest of Robert Pattinson in "Twilight Saga" movie series will front campaign for the new product, which is set to be launched in fall 2012.

Sharing her thoughts on the French fashion house, Kristen said to Women's Wear Daily, "Balenciaga has always stood out to me." She went on, "Even when I first began to consider fashion and admittedly rarely knew the brand I was wearing, I always recognized and loved Balenciaga."

"It feels full circle to be involved with something that spoke to me then and of course continues to excite me now. The brand is just cool. That's the way it is," Kristen gushed further. "I feel drawn to it. It provokes on a number of levels. It isn't afraid or contrived. It hits a very cool balance, »

Kristen Stewart Shares “Radical Spirit” (And Smell) Of Balenciaga

13 January 2012 8:06 AM, PST | TheFabLife - Movies | See recent TheFabLife - Movies news »

Kristen Stewart and Balenciaga go way back — she wore that red-and-white one-shoulder number on the left at the world premiere of Twilight back in 2008, and the black-and-brown one is from the New Moon premiere in Madrid. “Even when I first began to consider fashion and admittedly rarely knew the brand I was wearing, I always recognized and loved Balenciaga,” she told Wwd today, when it was announced that she’d be the face of the fashion house’s new fragrance for women. And the way she described Balenciaga sounds a lot like the way we feel about her: “The brand is just cool. That’s the way it is. I feel drawn to it. It provokes on a number of levels. It isn’t afraid or contrived. It hits a very cool balance, always. Always pretty undeniable.”

Daily Briefing. New Film Quarterly

7 January 2012 8:02 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

The new Film Quarterly is out and, of the four pieces online, the standout for me is Caetlin Benson-Allott's: "Since Marey's motion studies at the end of the 19th century, film has been a tool for providing visible evidence, a record of things seen. The development of digital imaging technology over the past twenty years has transformed that original empirical function. Advancements in CGI enable convincing depictions of things impossible to see in everyday life: dinosaurs, hobbits, viruses. It has become necessary to speak of 'hypervisibility' to describe the way movies can realistically render such previously hard-to-envision phenomena. Steven Soderbergh's Contagion tries to contest this prevailing logic by insisting on the limits of visibility."
