- He grew up in Pasadena, California, where his father was a cardiologist.
- The seminal film The Graduate (1967), made from his novel of the same name, made Webb famous, but not rich. He took a flat fee for the movie rights, did not take a percentage of its profits, and donated the book's copyright. He and his wife Eve worked odd jobs, and lived in campgrounds, trailer parks, nudist colonies, and a Motel 6 before settling in England.
- He studied history and literature at Williams College, then an all-male school in Massachusetts, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1961. There he met his future wife Eve Rudd, a student at nearby Bennington College.
