Official The Wolfman Website Opens Wide

31 December 2009 4:10 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It’s a rare horror movie that my wife will even consider going to. “The Wolfman”, staring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Art Malik and coming up Feb 12, has just that perfect mix of English manors, tough but fluffy damsels looking perfect even as they run, arms akimbo, through the moors, a slavering man beast on the hunt to do something dastardly and perhaps scandalous to our fair maiden besides tear her into kibble. I guess that is what she likes about it. She won’t give me details, but her pupils get really big when she watches the previews. “The Wolfman” official website is now open for business. It’s got the regular fare. Cool wallpaper, the preview vids, nice mouseover sound effects. I dig it. With films like “The Wolfman”, especially with this great cast, baby there is no school like the old school. »

Casting For ‘The Hobbit’ Open To Fans

29 December 2009 11:28 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Earlier this month we posted about the fact that the casting for the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit was starting. Producer Peter Jackson said they were casting the net wide to find actors and actresses for the various different roles, including the key one of the titular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

Contrary to previous reports of Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis being confirmed to return as Lord Elrond and Smeagol/Gollum respectively, apparently they aren’t offering Any of the roles to anyone automatically until they’ve done a full casting search. The exception to that is Ian McKellen as Gandalf, who has officially been confirmed as coming back.

There’s still no word on casting beyond McKellen, but I imagine with the production start date of mid-2010 that’ll change quite quickly. And to move things along, it appears that casting for The Hobbit is turning to You, the average fan. »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): The Wolfman: Hair Today, Gore Tomorrow

22 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The beast is back, and he’s staring Fangoria right in the eye. It’s May 2008, and the end of a long day at England’s Pinewood Studios, where your correspondent has been given a tantalizing behind-the-scenes tour of Universal’s latest attempt to mine its classic horror back catalog, following the successful revamp of The Mummy. After visiting various sets and interviewing some of the cast and crew of The Wolfman, we have decamped to a windowless room to chat with makeup legend Rick Baker about the task of turning star Benicio Del Toro into the eponymous monster.

Midway through our chat, the lights go out, plunging the room into total darkness. “Stay calm,” instructs the film’s unit publicist, “it’s just a problem with the fuse.” But something is afoot. Suddenly, there’s movement at a door, and a large shape enters the room. As our eyes become accustomed to the gloom, »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

19 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

The Hobbit: Jedwood's prospects rise as Tobey Maguire's wane | Ben Child

17 December 2009 5:37 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Tobey Maguire denied he was to slip on the furry feet earlier this week. But Bilbo Baggins aside, which other characters need shoehorning into Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro's film? And who should play them?

Just about every diminutive actor in Hollywood (and beyond) has been mentioned in connection with the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit. Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe was the first to rule himself out of the running - and thank goodness. This week Spider-Man's Tobey Maguire has made it clear he's not been approached for the role, despite persistent rumours.

"I have not met with del Toro. We don't have any near future plans," Maguire told the Hollywood Reporter. "I don't know if something got misconstrued or miscommunicated but the source was not accurate at all.

Rinsch Goes Back To The Black Lagoon

15 December 2009 4:17 PM, PST | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

Variety is reporting that Carl Rinsch, director of February’s forthcoming remake of George Romero’s The Crazies, is in talks with Universal to direct the studios’ long gestating remake of the 1954 classic Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Recently Breck Eisner (Sahara) had been attached to helm the project, but left earlier this year.

Gary Ross (of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville) wrote previous drafts of the project. Fans will no doubt know that Gary Ross is in fact the son of Arthur Ross, one of the co-writers of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon (along with Maurice Zimm and Harry Essex).

Rinsch is currently next directing 47 Ronin, also for Universal, a samurai-adventure pic to star Keanu Reeves.

Universal is eager to continue resurrecting their classic monsters, the Black Lagoon remake would fall into place behind U’s The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving, »

"The Wolfman" Cursed With An 'R' Rating

Universal has announced that "The Wolfman", the 2010 remake of the 1941 classic horror film, will be rated 'R' for "bloody horror, violence and gore."

The film is directed by Joe Johnston starring Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Art Malik, slated for release February 12, 2010.

Set in the late 1880s, the film keeps the plotline of the original, with 'Lawrence Talbot' (del Toro) reuniting with his estranged father (Hopkins) following the disappearance of his brother.

"...Lawrence Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the Victorian hamlet of Blackmoore, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget.

When his brother's fiancée, 'Gwen Conliffe' (Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing lover, Talbot returns home to join the search.

"He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable blood lust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named 'Aberline' (Weaving) has come to investigate. »
