The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it’s the year that the headline is from. It’s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! Steve and I collaborated in May of 2011 on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe and I’ve been writing a regular monthly movie-related column since. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, I post all of my articles here at We Are Movie Geeks. This month’s edition of The Globe takes place in 1865, the year President Lincoln was shot .Steve and I originally decided I would write an article »

Cannes Fest gets Lincoln director to preside jury Steven Spielberg may have lost the Best Director Academy Award last Sunday evening, but he has won the presidency of the jury of this year's upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Following on the footsteps of Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti, who headed last year's jury that awarded Michael Haneke's drama Amour the coveted Palme d'Or, Spielberg will preside the jury at the next Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 15 to 26. (Pictured above: Steven Spielberg looking straight at the camera.) So far, Spielberg has won only one award at the Cannes Fest: as one of the writers (along with Matthew Robbins and Hal Barwood) of the 1974 drama The Sugarland Express, starring Goldie Hawn and William Atherton, and which Spielberg himself directed. Also, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial had its world premiere at Cannes as the closing-night gala film in 1982, while the melodrama The Color Purple »

We Got This Covered’s Blu-Ray Picks For Dec. 30 – Jan. 5

2 January 2013 2:09 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Welcome to 2013 everyone! Hopefully this is the year that I finally get that hoverboard I’ve wanted since 1989. This week’s featured Blu-Ray, Looper, is dominating the sales charts along with (surprise!) The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight Trilogy. The latest James Bond film, Skyfall, doesn’t get a home release for at least another month, but it’s already making a not-so-secret-agent showing on the Pre-Order charts.

This week, watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt act like a young Bruce Willis in Looper, Cosmopolis will confuse and dismay Twilight fans everywhere, and the FX network’s hit show Justified gets its third season released in glorious gun-smoking Blu-Ray.

Ready for this week’s top releases? Then read on.

Looper

Release Date: December 31st, 2012

Starring: Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels.

Director: Rian Johnson

A critically-acclaimed science fiction action film that was selected as the opening »
