Common Searches For ‘Luv’ In First Trailer For His Sundance Drama

7 September 2012 2:06 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After finding success in the hip-hop landscape, Common has dabbled in Hollywood with films like Smokin’ Aces, Terminator Salvation, American Gangster and Date Night, but now he’s finally been handed a promising leading role. The actor debuted the drama Luv at Sundance earlier this year and now we’ve get a trailer ahead of its fall release.

Directed by Sheldon Candis, the drama follows a young boy Michael Rainey Jr. and his uncle, played by Common, as they have what looks to be a dangerous afternoon filled with gunplay and car rides. It actually looks like a pretty tense coming-of-age film and along with The Wire‘s Michael Kenneth Williams, 24‘s Dennis Haysbert and Charles S. Dutton, Danny Glover, Meagan Good and Lonette McKee, we’ve got a great cast. Check out the trailer and poster below.

Sundance London 2012: 'Luv'

27 April 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★☆☆ From debut director Sheldon Candis comes Luv (2012), and unconventional crime drama set on the mean, crab-filled streets of Baltimore. Candis largely ensures the cat-and-mouse structure typical of most gangster narratives, instead choosing to focus on the relationship between 11-year-old Woody Watson (Michael Rainey Jr.) and his entrepreneurial Uncle Vincent (played by Us rapper Common). Estranged from his mother, who abandoned her son before fleeing to North Carolina, Woody is taken out of school for the day in order to learn the art of "taking care of business" - with life-altering consequences.

Sundance London 2012: preview – shivering with anticipation!

16 April 2012 9:57 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The 26th-29th April sees the Sundance London Film and Music festival hit the O2 Arena, which sees the festival – renowned for its programme of independent film – take place in the UK for the first time in its 34-year history.

As a Sundance newbie, I am excited to attend the indie festival.  I’ve always heard so many great things about it, especially as a lot of great films initially got noticed at previous Sundance fests (Napoleon Dynamite, Clerks, Reservoir Dogs).

Looking at the line-up, I expect the cream of the crop of forthcoming independent releases.

Here are the following that I’m keeping my eye on during the festival:

For Ellen

The third feature film from In Between Days and Treeless Mountain writer and director So Yong Kim, and her first film with an American cast – a great cast ensemble, I need to add. Starring Little Miss Sunshine‘s »
