Austin Film Festival Sticks to the Script

Austin Film Festival Sticks to the Script
As Austin, Texas, continues to flaunt its clout as a filmmaking destination, its festival calendar grows ever more crowded, with newer events striving to carve out their own corners of the scene. But one of the city’s more idiosyncratic annual fests is also one of its oldest, and the 24th Austin Film Festival, taking place from Oct. 26-Nov. 2, has remained true to its initial mission — moving the spotlight from actors and directors to screenwriters.

This year, the fest has no shortage of Oscar-contending films scheduled to make their Lone Star debuts, from “Darkest Hour” to “Call Me by Your Name” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” as well as an opening night gala for “Lady Bird” with writer-director Greta Gerwig in attendance, and a closing night presentation of “Chappaquiddick” with screenwriters Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan. Texas native Dan Rather will be on hand to discuss higher-ed documentary “Fail State,” and the festival

Meet the Women Behind the Camera on Dee Rees’ ‘Mudbound’
To tell the story of “Mudbound,” director Dee Rees surrounded herself with strong women behind the camera.

Angie Wells

Makeup

Wells met Rees as a makeup artist on her press tour for “Bessie.” “One day I let her know, I just don’t do personal calls. I run makeup departments,” says Wells, who works on the TV show “Black-ish.” She got the call for “Mudbound” a few weeks later. “We talked about authenticity and realness of the looks,” says Wells, who headed a department of 13 people. “This wasn’t one of those ‘It’s supposed to look rugged, but people are too pretty.’ Dee wanted realism, and I appreciated that.”

Rachel Morrison

Director of Photography

Morrison (“Fruitvale Station”) knew Rees from the indie festival circuit, where they developed mutual respect. “She was intent on frames that were bursting at the seams,” Morrison says about creating the look for the film, “contrasting

Big Sean definitely believes in the power of advertising.

After all, he's the man who hung a title like "Dance (A$$)" on his latest single, a handle that was practically guaranteed to attract a certain, uh, clientele. So when it came time to do a video for the song, well, let's just say he needed to deliver the goods. And we are happy to report to all the posterior proponents out there that he has done just that. And then some.

Because the "Dance" video — which premiered online Tuesday — is definitely packing more ass than a Grand Canyon mule tour, thanks in no small part to the contributions of Ms. Nicki Minaj, who shows up midway (in a pair of Union Jack hotpants

Film Lounge startup takes distribution online

London -- Genre filmmakers are about to get another distribution option.

Beginning in November, Film Lounge, a U.K.-based Web site aimed squarely at the lads' market, will provide a global digital distribution outlet for indie films.

Founded by Terry Stone, Mike Watson and Anthony Nottage, the Film Lounge site will offer producers and directors a tailored distribution campaign and an opportunity to earn revenue "from distribution that they might otherwise not see," Stone told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. He said that cutting out the sales agent and existing exclusively online will mean an increase in the revenue going directly to the producers.

Stone said he and his team will handpick 60 titles to feature on the site in the first year so as not to offer the potential consumer "too much distraction."

In the first three months of launch, all films will be available to stream or download for a flat fee of 1.99 pounds ($3.90) a pop. That will jump to 4.99 pounds ($10) per film, depending on a star system based on reviews. Targeting males 18-35, all titles will carry an 18 certificate and will be from genres including horror, martial arts and humor.

The plan is to split revenue from downloads or streaming on a quarterly basis with a net monitoring system in place.

Stone said a "conservative estimate" should see each title generate 15,000 downloads a month.

The trio anticipates an expenditure of 3 million pounds ($5.9 million) for the site's first year. Among the titles already signed up for digital distribution is Julian Gilbey's "Reckoning Day."
