2013 domestic box office record: History is made (once again) — if you pretend inflation doesn’t exist (photo: 2013 North American box office no. 1 movie, ‘Iron Man 3,’ with Robert Downey Jr.) Even though Will Ferrell’s comedy Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and the latest Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio collaboration, The Wolf of Wall Street, have opened more modestly than expected, while the Justin Bieber concert movie Believe has been totally discredited, the 2013 Christmas and New Year’s season has been quite strong at the domestic box office. According to Variety, figures are up 10% compared to 2012, while the total 2013 box office tally up to December 29 is a mere $1.6 million lower than the $10.837 billion record set last year. Does this latest record-breaking box office news sound too good to be true? Well, perhaps that’s because it is (too good to be true). See, Thor and Loki and Bilbo and Katniss »

The Image Comics book will offer another take on the Black Swan director's upcoming Biblical epic.
Writer Ari Handel and artist Niko Henrichon are collaborating with Aronofsky on the project.
"It has been a great thrill to see an artist of Niko's calibre interpret the Noah screenplay through his own vision," said Aronofsky. "The results are lavish.
"This take on the story is from the original screenplay Ari and I wrote, before we began the long process of shaping the story for the big screen. So it is a slightly different take on the material. This book, not merely a movie companion piece, will hopefully give readers a rare insight into the creative process."
The book marks Henrichon's first major comics project since working with Brian K Vaughan on the acclaimed Pride of Baghdad.
The ladies of the big screen were kicking butt this year, with sassy characters like Hit-Girl and The Hobbit's Tauriel showing off their physical talents, while other female characters like Katniss, Emma Watson, and Warm Bodies' Julie were just fighting to stay alive. We certainly wouldn't want to face off with one of these ladies in a dark alley, but which of these tough-girl characters was the best of 2013? »

Paramount Pictures has released a couple of new high-resolution images from director Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming Biblical epic Noah. The film is, of course, an adaptation of the Bible’s Great Flood story, but with an Aronofsky twist. These new images give us a look at the practical ark that was built for the production as well as Russell Crowe’s titular character embracing his wife, played by Jennifer Connelly. The first two trailers for the pic promised plenty of gorgeous imagery and a literal boat load of CGI animals, and I’m eager to see what else Aronofsky has up his sleeve in the full film. Hit the jump to take a look at the new images. The film also stars Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, Douglas Booth, and Anthony Hopkins. Noah opens March 28, 2014. Via Paramount Pictures. Great films leave a mark. A shot will linger in your mind's eye, strains from a score will haunt you, and the perfect quote will always be associated with your experience of seeing a film.Below, Cine-List selects and ranks ten memorable movies quotes from 2013.10. The quote: “I’m a firm believer in Karma, and I think this situation is a huge learning lesson for me. I want to lead a country one day, for all I know.”Who said it: Emma Watson, as Nicki, in Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring.”Why it’s so great: Self-delusion, vapidity, false spirituality and vanity as a form of escape are all at the heart of Coppola’s dreamy, spikey film about celebrity culture. This line from the leader of a teen crime ring is spot-on in that regard -- and Watson’s delivery is hilarious. (Screenplay online.)9. The quote: “We’re only here briefly. »

Making a good trailer is not an easy proposition; while some trailers come off as too vague, telling the audience nothing enticing about the project it is promoting, others can seen too expository, revealing the plot of the entire movie in two minutes. A great trailer, however, takes on a life of its own, becoming something worth revisiting regardless of one’s thoughts on the film it is attached to. Every year sees a few such trailers released, and 2013 was no different. Part 1 of our list of the year’s best trailers was released last week, and here is Part 2.
15) Don Jon
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has proved himself a versatile force in front of the camera. However, nobody really knew what to expect from his first directorial effort, but the movie’s first trailer went a long way towards both giving an idea and furthering the mystery. Is baby number four on the way? The 46-year-old A-list actress has been hiding her tummy in midsection-concealing ensembles for about a month, but on Dec. 8 she offered a peek of an undeniable bump underneath an oversized cardigan.
Julia Roberts and her husband Danny Moder are the proud parents to three young kids: 9-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, and 6-year-old Henry, so it wouldn’t be so unusual for her to have another little one, even though she is now over 40.
