Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince Blu-ray Review

27 December 2009 3:58 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The Harry Potter series is something that has been running at the same time as the book were being written, and it’s hard not to wonder how much one commented and shaped the other. J. K. Rowling has suggested certain things be in the film because of end payoffs, and now we can see what she was hoping for as the books are done. With Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, I think it’s fair to say that this film isn’t the sixth film in the series, even though it is, but meant to be the start of a trilogy. My review of the sixth Harry Potter episode will continue if you click the continue reading link (I dare you).

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) has grown up and is almost nearly on his own, but dealing in the aftermath of the last film’s mess, which involved Sirious Black getting killed. »

MTV's Alexa Chung: Vogue's most stylish of '09?

24 December 2009 11:46 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

It seems someone is watching Alexa Chung. Hint: It's not TV viewers.

While MTV canceled the former model's talk show, "It's On with Alexa Chung," after only two seasons, Vogue seems to think she's the most watchable every season. They've named the 26-year-old the best dressed of 2009.

"She won over the U.S. style pundits," says Vogue's fashion judges. "With her quirky style and kept us on her side by staying true to the formula that won her our approval in the first place."

And, of course, Vogue is allowed to speak that condescendingly. They're Vogue!

Chung tops their list for her hipster mix of high and low style, such as wearing H&M with Chanel.

Vogue's new fashion queen beat out some pretty die hard fashionistas including Sarah Jessica Parker's quirky high-end style and Kate Moss with her "just rolled out of bed, but, blimey, I'm fab" look. »

MTV Star Chung Voted Vogue's Style Queen 2009

23 December 2009 11:56 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

MTV chatshow host Alexa Chung has beaten supermodel Kate Moss and style icon Sarah Jessica Parker to the title of Vogue magazine's best dressed woman of 2009.

The British beauty, a former model, has caused a stir in the U.S. since moving Stateside to host her own talk show on the music channel - and is often invited to high-fashion events and runway shows.

And it seems Chung has taken some tips from her couture connections - fashion bible Vogue has listed her atop its most stylish females countdown.

The 26 year old was closely followed by French actress Audrey Tautou, and then Sex And The City star Parker.

U.K. TV talent show The X Factor has also made its mark on the fashion world, with judges Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue in at number four and five respectively.

Harry Potter starlet Emma Watson, a model for Burberry and Chanel, comes in at number six, while blondes Sienna Miller and Diane Kruger also made it into the top 10 along with Indian newcomer Freida Pinto. Formerly undisputed style queen Kate Moss is last on the list at number 10. »

All the film highlights this Christmas

Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights

Christmas Eve

Over the Hedge

(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1

A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.

Corpse Bride

(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1

Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love »

Viewers would prefer Ewan McGregor over Matt Smith as next Doctor Who

23 December 2009 3:47 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When David Tennant hands over the keys to the Tardis on New Year's Day it will be the end of the most popular incarnation of Doctor Who of all time.

But there's bad news for new Doctor Matt Smith. In a poll of British TV viewers, more than 21 per cent of respondents put Ewan McGregor as their first choice to take over as the new Time Lord, with Matt Smith coming sixth.

Research commissioned by leading comparison site Gocompare.com reveals that of the 10 Doctors we've seen so far David Tennant is easily the most popular, with over 45 per cent naming him as their favourite.

Tom Baker, who played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981 in his trademark hat and long woolly scarf, was second with nearly 20 per cent of the votes, and Jon Pertwee's 'dandy' Doctor was third with just over 10 per cent. Tom Baker was the most popular Doctor among 36-to-40-year-olds. »

Emma Watson conjured up the most dough in the ‘00s

22 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

The Guinness Book of Records recently calculated that Emma Watson, of all seven Harry Potter movies fame, was the highest-grossing actress from 2000-2009, whose film work grossed $5.4 billion worldwide. The 19-year-old actress beat out the likes of Angelina Jolie (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Wanted), Kate Winslet (The Reader, Revolutionary Road) and Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia,The Devil Wears Prada), whose movies were among the top grossing of the decade.

It’s hardly surprising that the actress who plays the adorably nerdy, incredibly talented Hermione Granger Expelliarmus-ed the competition — she obviously does that on a daily basis in Hogwarts, and Hollywood is no different. Since the release of the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Watson’s stellar performance has put us in a Confundus Charm and made it impossible not to become immediately and unequivocally obsessed with her.

Blu-ray Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

20 December 2009 2:45 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince it finally hits home that Warner Bros.' phenomenally successful cash cow is starting to come to its conclusion. The battle between the boy wizard Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his ghostly nemesis Voldermort (Ralph Fiennes) nears its climax during the student's sixth term at Hogwarts, and for all the twists, turns and surprises the revelation that the end is nigh might just be the most startling one of all.

This comes from the point of view of someone who has not always been this series' biggest fan. I wasn't impressed with director Chris Columbus' first two chapters, their sluggish pace and simplistic storytelling drove me nuts. Yet Alfonso Cuarón's magnificent third entry (still the best of the bunch) blew me away, Mike Newell's follow-up felt more like a John Hughes meets J.K Rowling hybrid than it did anything else. »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Celebrities and cartoons take on 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon'

19 December 2009 1:39 PM, PST | Twilight Examiner | See recent Twilight Examiner news »

With 2009 winding down and The Twilight Saga: New Moon still lingering strong in the theaters, you've been hearing a lot about New Moon making year-end lists and castmates (like Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Anna Kendrick) making various waves in the small (and, in Kendrick's case, very large) triumphs arena. So, to see magazine publications like People and Entertainment Weekly include Twilight cartoons and impersonation spreads isn't altogether unheard of. For starters, People Magazine has included a two-page spread of the "Best of the Decade" for teenagers, and among those featured are Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as "Edward Cullen" and "Bella Swan," Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene as "Emmett" and "Alice," and Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift as, well, themselves. Also included in the feature are Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, as well as The Jonas Brothers, Zac Efron, and Vanessa Hudgens »

The Highest-Grossing Female Star of the Decade Is ... Emma Watson?

18 December 2009 10:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Emma Watson earned her place in the latest edition of The Guinness Book of World Records by becoming the biggest-grossing female actress of the last decade. While she may not be headlining her own films in the same way as Julia Roberts or Angelina Jolie, Watson's appearances as Hermione Granger in six Harry Potter installments have grossed an amazing $5.4 billion worldwide.

This doesn't exactly prove that Watson is a bankable movie star, only that she was cast in just the right role in just the right franchise at just the right time. It will be interesting to see how the Potter cast fares post-Potter, as the last two films in the series see release in the next two years. Watson has speculated in the past that she might even leave acting behind forever after Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 wraps.

Rounding out second-place is Watson's Harry Potter co-star Dame Maggie Smith »
