Killing Them Softly: Brad Pitt Flick Has Good Buzz From Cannes

22 May 2012 8:36 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Or, why American men hate Brad Pitt, especially if they say they don’t.

This month marks the 66th anniversary of the running of the cinematic bulls that is the Cannes Film Festival.  It is a near two-week period in which highly anticipated, awards-season projects start to get positioned for their run into the holiday movie season, and at the same time, a period in which smaller, dark horse projects jockey for distributorship and buzz at the feet of showbiz tastemakers.

It is also, regrettably, another week in which Brad Pitt gets to be treated like Brad Pitt.

And that’s really saying something without really saying anything at all.  It isn’t really accurate to say that Brad Pitt gets treated like royalty (not even Saudi royalty), because there isn’t a Prince or King left on the planet that is simultaneously as rich and good-looking and genuinely admired as Brad Pitt is. »

MaryAnn Sleasman: America's Got Talent Recap: That Time Howard Stern Made a Child Cry on National TV

To be fair, Sharon also buzzed Mir Money, the pint-sized rapper from Philly. And to be fair to Mir Money, his audition will not, by any stretch of the imagination, go down in America's Got Talenthistory as one of the many cringe-inducing performances by some of the more unfortunate hopefuls to offer themselves up to the twisted trio of Sharon Osbourne, Howie Mandel, and Howard Stern. He was cute, and in a few years, he may be an Mc to be reckoned with, but for now, he's a 9-year-old who can rap better than most other 7 year-olds. Had he been advanced to the Las Vegas rounds, more than likely he would have been quickly eliminated by a more spectacular act, and like Sharon pointed out, it would have been cruel to prolong the process.

Corey Feldman's Close Encounter At Gig

21 May 2012 5:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Corey Feldman had a close encounter with alien life forms at a Roger Waters concert over the weekend (19-20May12) when his family became convinced they'd spied three UFOs hovering over the venue.

The Goonies star was attending Pink Floyd rocker Waters' The Wall Live show at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles when a group of family and friends he was with told him of their spooky sighting.

In a post on Twitter.com, Feldman - who last week (ends18May12) took out a restraining order against a woman who allegedly refused to leave his home - wrote, "As if this week couldn't get weirder 3 UFOs showed up at the Colliseum (sic) during The Wall! My mother, son, security and friends all saw it!!" »

Cafe de Flore – review

10 May 2012 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A narcissistic and unpersuasive mosaic of dreams and flashbacks in which a poor superstar DJ mopes about finding multiple soulmates

Retreating to his native French Canada after 2009's bland The Young Victoria, Jean-Marc Vallée here gives us a narcissistic and fundamentally unpersuasive mosaic-film, shuffling around scene fragments, dreams and flashbacks while heading towards what will almost certainly prove to be the most stupid movie twist of the decade. Two stories emerge. Antoine (Kevin Parent) is a superstar DJ in latter-day Montreal whose success can't mask the sadness he feels around his first wife; in late-60s Paris, meanwhile, a fiercely protective single mother (a dowdified Vanessa Paradis) raises a young boy with Down's syndrome (Marin Gerrier). These periods are linked by the title track – a Parisian chanson, remixed as chillout in Montreal. Yet the music, like the Down's syndrome in the very-much-secondary strand, is merely here to provide some emotional »

Café de Flore Review: Emotionally Resonant, Superbly-Acted Drama

9 May 2012 10:06 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Café de Flore, the latest film from Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y., The Young Victoria) is a diverting experience from its outset. An opening title crawl unfolds alongside Pink Floyd’s seminal album-opener Speak To Me/Breathe, and knowing how notoriously picky the band is when licensing their music, if it is good enough for Waters, Gilmour and Co., then it is probably going to be good enough for audiences too. This is a first-rate drama the likes of which rarely abounds; a confidently-composed enigma wrapped in an affectionate, often devastating pair of love stories.

For much of its first act, audiences might feel uncomfortable and confused; this is to be expected and very much part of the the intended experience, one assumes. The initial question seems to be how Antoine’s (Kevin Parent) perfect life – in a relationship with a beautiful woman, Rose (Evelyne Brochu), living in »

Anathema – Weather Systems Album Review

One of the best albums to be released in 2010 was Anathema’s We’re Here Because We’re Here. Fact. What’s that? No, it wasn’t? You’ve obviously never listened to it then. Here we go.

The album was on a many album of the year list and it was no surprise, really. The textured layers of musical arrangements; delicately glorious and invoking vocals which twisted, turned, touched and soared; the impending doom-esque, apocalyptic yet undeniably beautiful connotations of each track’s layout and content; and the complete musicianship of the album, which left it feeling as a gigantic, empowering, towering body of work resulted in the album hitting hard with anybody who took a listen; be it fellow musicians, critics, or even just music fans who took the time to »

The Doctor Who Column: The (occasionally excessive?) music of Doctor Who

25 April 2012 11:41 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Chopped my finger off while preparing dinner – strange, I didn't hear a big, dramatic chord in the background. Whispered sweet words in my wife's ear – strange again, I couldn't hear the beautiful sound of harps trilling in the background. And stranger still, when I tripped over in the street, I didn't once hear silly whaa-whaa-whaaaaa comedy music. Just deafening laughter from passers by.

Yet whenever I see most TV programmes and films these days, there's musical cues ahoy to be found in the background. TV, in particular, can't seem to get through a programme without striking up the band. Even In EastEnders – although music is strictly limited to a pointedly chosen classic hit from years gone by. Say that furious hard nut Derek Branning is threatening hapless cheeky chappie Alfie Moon in the Queen Vic over a packet of pork scratchings, the cunning producers will heavily signpost the scenario with »

Constructive criticism: the week in architecture

A new proposal aims to save Battersea Power Station, the Metropolitan Arts Centre opens in Belfast and Avengers Assemble shows how not to do architecture

The very words "Battersea Power Station" are enough to elicit a collective groan these days, so anaesthetised have we become to bold new plans to turn the London landmark into a theme park/ice rink/hotel/shopping mall/football stadium/urban park. It's defeated architects and property developers so many times, fatigue has just about set in permanently. If they announced it was going to become an intergalactic rocket launchpad tomorrow, we'd all yawn.

But here we go again. Just two months ago Terry Farrell, now Boris Johnson's design advisor, proposed turning the site into an urban park (which would entail knocking part of it down), while speculators observed it would be worth nearly half a billion pounds more without the power station. But »

Dick Clark: 1929-2012

18 April 2012 12:56 PM, PDT | IMDb News

Dick Clark, chairman and CEO of Dick Clark Productions, best known for hosting the classic musical variety show "American Bandstand" for more than three decades, as well as ringing in the New Year on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," died today in Los Angeles after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 82 years old.

Clark was born and raised in Mount Vernon, New York, on November 30, 1929, to Julia Fuller and Richard Augustus Clark. He had one older brother, Bradley, who was killed in World War II. At the age of 16, Clark got his first job in the mailroom of WRUN, a radio station in Utica, New York, which was owned by his uncle and managed by his father. He worked his way up the ranks and was promoted to weatherman before becoming a radio announcer.

After graduating from Syracuse University with a degree in business administration, Clark began working at several radio and television stations before landing at WFIL radio in 1952. While working at the station, Clark became a substitute host for Bob Horn's Bandstand, an afternoon program where teenagers danced to popular music, broadcast by WFIL's affiliated television station. In 1956, Horn was arrested for drunk driving, giving Clark the perfect opportunity to step in as the full-time host.

After acquiring nationwide distribution the newly reformatted program, now titled "American Bandstand", premiered on ABC on August 5, 1957. In addition to the name change, Clark added interviews with artists (starting with Elvis Presley), lip-sync performances, and "Rate-a-Record," allowing teens to judge the songs on the show -- and giving birth to the popular phrase, "It's got a good beat and you can dance to it." Clark also established a formal dress code, mandating dresses and skirts for the women and a coat and tie for the men. But perhaps the most impactful change that Clark made to the show was ending "American Bandstand's" all-white policy, allowing African American artists to perform on the show.

Under Clark's influence, "Bandstand" became one of the most successful and longest-running musical programs, featuring artists including Chuck Berry, the Doors, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Smokey Robinson. Sonny and Cher, The Jackson 5, Prince, and Aerosmith were among the influential artists and bands that made their TV debuts on "Bandstand," which is also credited with helping to make America more accepting of rock 'n roll.

With the success of "American Bandstand," Clark became more invested in the music publishing and recording businesses, and began managing artists, hosting live sock hops, and arranging concert tours. But in 1960, when the United States Senate began investigating "payola," the practice in which music producing companies paid broadcasting companies to favor their products, Clark became caught up in the scandal. The investigation found he had partial copyrights to over 150 songs, many of which were featured on his show. Clark denied he was involved in any way, but admitted to accepting a fur and jewelry from a record company president. In the end, the Senate could not find any illegal actions by Clark, but ABC asked Clark to either sell his shares in these companies or leave the network so there was no conflict of interest. He chose to sell and continue on as host of American Bandstand, which was unaffected by the scandal.

In 1964, Clark moved Bandstand from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and became more involved in television production. Under his company Dick Clark Productions, he produced such shows as "Where the Action Is," "TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes," and more recently, "So You Think You Can Dance," as well as made-for-television movies including Elvis, The Birth of the Beatles, Wild Streets, and The Savage Seven. Clark also hosted TV's $10,000 Pyramid, TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes (with co-host Ed McMahon), Scattergories, and The Other Half. Clark also had several radio programs, including "The Dick Clark National Music Survey", "Countdown America", and "Rock, Roll & Remember."

In 1972, he produced and hosted the very first edition of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," a musical program where Clark counted down until the New Year ball dropped in Times Square, featuring taped performances from musical artists. "New Year's Rockin' Eve" soon became a cultural tradition, airing on ABC every year with Clark as host (except in 1999 when ABC aired "ABC 2000Today," a news milestone program hosted by Peter Jennings). In December of 2004, Clark suffered a minor stroke and was unable to host, so Regis Philbin stepped in as a substitute. The following year, Clark returned as co-host alongside primary host Ryan Seacrest. Many were worried about Clark due to his slurred and breathless speech, and he admitted on-air he was still recovering but that he wouldn't have missed the broadcast for the world. The following year, Seacrest became "New Year's Rockin' Eve's" primary host, but Clark always returned for the countdown.

Clark has received several notable awards including four Emmy Awards, the Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, and the Peabody Award in 1999. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1976, The Radio Hall of Fame in 1990, Broadcasting Magazine Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.

Clark is survived by his wife, Kari Wigton, to whom he was married since 1977, and three children from two previous marriages: daughter Cindy and son Duane from his marriage to Loretta Martin, which lasted from 1962 until 1971, and another son, Richard Augustus, from his first marriage to his high school sweetheart Barbara Mallery, which lasted from 1952 until 1961.

The Awakening's Supernatural Charms, A Movie Review

*spoiler alert.

Director: Nick Murphy.

Writers: Stephen Volk and Nick Murphy.

Cast: Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton.

Back in the days of post-war England, true paranormal investigators were few and far between. Spiritualists most likely outnumbered the sleuths who were interested in debunking the paranormal. While Houdini did correspond with Harry Price, a British pioneer of paranormal research, both of them were well respected for chasing after frauds. For Price, he showed that the investigative approach to proving the existence of ghosts must be methodical.

In The Awakening, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) is a self-proclaimed investigator with plenty of credentials to show that every paranormal case has a plausible reason. This myth buster heads to a boarding school to find a ghost boy said to be haunting the premises, and disprove his existence.

This movie combines the best elements from Shelly Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others, »

So let’s get formalities out of the way; there once was (still is) a band by the name of Neils Children, they were a post-punk band with psychedelic tendencies and as they went on began to delve a little deeper into the dark side, garage and psych rock. It’s during this period, that I am forced to admit I have prior, I have history, with this band. I say that, I doubt they’ll remember it, though I remember it well. It was a gig supporting The Horrors in Cardiff Barfly, who were touring in support of their debut album Strange House.

Think of Sonic Youth. When most, and I imagine you’re no different, think of Sonic Youth they think of noise rock’s power couple. Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, would be the most often name checked and revered persons that come to mind, indie icons as they are. Sonic Youth’s own Lennon and McCartney, with more sexual tension. Actually, sexual release and fulfilment I’d speculate given that they got married and had a daughter. Which is a darn sight more than Lennon and McCartney managed with their working relationship. If only though.

Anyhow, yes, it’s alternative’s own Mr and Mrs Right (though now in line for a divorce, as any review of this album seems adverse to not mentioning or anything in relation to Sonic Youth, I’m no different it seems, whatever) or Lennon/McCartney that come to mind when musing on Sonic Youth, »
