Last month HBO was showing Spike Lee's Girl 6(1996) and this month (until May 28) Crooklyn (1994).
I have been encouraging folks to take a look at the films and report back on how it compares to their first viewing -- if they have seen it before and if they have not, how it aligns with their "understanding" of the auteur's style. I am currently writing about his contributions to American cinema and not only was I surprised at the results, but, so were the individual spectators. The truth is that Lee's films are far more complex than people remember or are conscious of when watching them. Here are some of the things I called attention to in our post viewing conversations about Crooklyn and Girl 6:
1: They each have women at the center of the narrative.
2: The director appears in both films.
3: They have elements that »

Some quickie film casting news... First, Isaiah Washington will co-star in the drama, The Trials of Cate McCall, which stars Kate Beckinsale as "a former hotshot prosecutor who threw her career away when she became an addict. Hoping to regain credibility and win custody of her estranged daughter, the lawyer takes on the appeal of a wrongly convicted murderess. She battles crooked cops, a broken system, and her own demons." Nick Nolte and James Cromwell also star. Production has started in Los Angeles. Not sure what role Washington plays in this. Second, Nikki M. James (Third Watch, Law & Order - photo above) will co-star alongside Jason »

Kerry Washington's character on ABC's new drama "Scandal" is a crisis manager. She's not a practicing lawyer (although she has a law degree) and not a PR mouthpiece (although that can be part of her job), but someone who helps her clients' public problems go away.
The show, which comes from "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" creator Shonda Rhimes, is inspired by the work of Judy Smith, a Washington-based crisis manager who has done work for clients ranging from Monica Lewinsky to Michael Vick to Bp. Rhimes' interest in the subject, though, predates her meeting with Smith.
"My simple answer is, [producing partner Betsy Beers] and I became interested in the world of crisis management when we were in our own crisis," Rhimes says.
"That would be very accurate," Beers adds. They don't elaborate on the subject, but it's hard not to think back to the controversy surrounding Isaiah Washington's exit from »

Producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers have had more public years on the job than this one since "Grey's Anatomy" premiered on ABC seven years ago. There was that debut season, obviously, where "Grey's" went from ABC afterthought (it was only supposed to have the post-"Desperate Housewives" timeslot for four weeks before giving way to "Boston Legal") into pop culture sensation. Or there were the various periods of controversy involving Isaiah Washington and/or Katherine Heigl, or various stories that proved divisive among "Grey's" viewership (ghost sex! George and Izzie!). I'm not sure the partnership has had a busier year than »

Hey guess which singer/dancer/felon is still a total ass? Give up? Chris Brown. Us Weekly is reporting that while at the Lasio Professional Hair Care Grammy suite gift lounge over the weekend, Brown swaggered on up to a brunette and laid down this sweet pick up line: "Can I get your number? I promise I won't beat you!"
Are Chris Brown and Rihanna Hooking Up?
Hilarous! Nice one! Oh man and I thought the, "Are those space pants? 'Cause your ass is out of this world" line was a surefire way to take a classy lady to Bone Town, but this smooth criminal (literally) blew that one out of the water. Was an alternative pick-up line?: "Hey Hotlips, you wanna take a ride in my car? I promise I won’t beat your face black and blue before I drop you off … this time!” Or maybe: "Hey Dreamweaver, wanna make out »

Sean Guard celebrates Black History Month with a selection of acclaimed African American films...
In the light and celebration of Black History Month, I’ve put together a small collection from the vast library of highly-acclaimed African American films. From Cicely Tyson to Denzel Washington to Spike Lee, I’ve included some of the classic films and miniseries that have come to contribute to my generation and others’ education of the struggles and contributions of Blacks in the past and present. Now, seeing as how there are tons of film to go over that fit rather easily into this category, this assemblage of titles are only a tip of the Black iceberg.
Native Son (1951)
Based on the novel by Richard Wright, this film focuses on a young black poverty stricken man living in 1930s Chicago. He takes a job as a chauffeur to a white family, which takes a turn »

TV fans are never happy when a beloved character makes an abrupt exit... especially if it's because the actor opted not to return. Christopher Meloni on "Law & Order: Svu"... Lisa Edelstein on "House"... Chad Michael Murray on "One Tree Hill."
But no one has caused a stir quite as much as Katherine Heigl did when she left "Grey's Anatomy" in 2009. Earlier in the year, she'd asked for her workload to be reduced to accommodate her new daughter and budding film career, but as her return to the show approached, she decided she didn't want to come back at all and requested a release from her contract.
Now that she's got a new movie coming out ("One For the Money," which opens on Jan. 27) she says she's hoping for a return to the show. "I've told them I want to," she tells E!. "Being a showrunner and being a writer of »

For a night known as Hollywood's most notorious open-bar gala, the Golden Globes ceremony remains shrouded in mystery. Most viewers probably don't even know who presents it (the Hollywood Foreign Press Association), how many voting members it has (only about 90), or what qualifies them to pass judgment on movies and television (they're Hollywood-based journalists -- some part-time, some full-time -- who write about film and TV for various overseas outlets).
Yet movie fans and awards mavens continue to take the Globes seriously as a precursor to the Academy Awards, since some of the Globe honorees will indeed go on to win Oscars. Others simply enjoy the Globes ceremony as one helluva wingding, where alcohol-fueled stars really loosen up in public. Either way, the Globes have a colorful history of glamour, scandal, and (occasionally) recognition of some of Hollywood's best work. With that legacy poised to continue when a cheeky Ricky Gervais »
