He was the driving force behind the restoration of William Shakespeare's original Globe Theatre in London, England. This replica is almost exact in every detail (apart from adhering to modern fire/safety regulations) to the construction of the original.The audience watches and feels a play in the same way as they would have done in Shakespeare's time. The Globe was fully restored and opened in the late 1990s, too late sadly for Wanamaker to see the fruits of his long labor of love--he died of cancer in 1993. more
