Steve Carell: 'I don't care for mean humour'

15 October 2010 1:30 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Steve Carell's shtick of frazzled normality has made him into an American national treasure. Ryan Gilbey digs beneath The Office star's genial surface to find more geniality underneath

Show me a comedian, the consensus has it, and I'll show you one mangled, messed-up soul. So what went wrong, or right, with Steve Carell? The term "well-adjusted" doesn't convey the extent of his apparent contentment. Sitting before me in a London hotel room, the 48-year-old looks so comfortable that you would think he had been installed here by the interior designers along with the coffee table and the escritoire. He is wearing a black jacket over a blue-grey V-neck jumper and white shirt; he talks in that reassuring, sane, steady voice in which he delivers so much poppycock as Michael Scott (the American David Brent) in the sublime Us version of The Office. He will occasionally hoist his vivid black eyebrows for emphasis. »

Steve Carell: Ricky Gervais Probably Hates Me

23 August 2010 12:50 AM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Steve Carell worries Ricky Gervais hates him. The actor, who recently announced he is quitting the American version of Ricky's sitcom "The Office", is paranoid his comic contemporary doesn't like him because of his modest personality.

When told Ricky hates people who project an "ever-so-humble shtick" during an interview with the Observer Magazine, Steve laughed and said, "Oh dear, he probably hates me." The 48-year-old star also doesn't understand why people are interested in him because he thinks he is "ordinary".

Steve, who has two children, daughter Elizabeth, nine, and son Johnny, six, with wife Nancy Walls Carell, said, "I don't know how other people perceive the lives of actors but mine is fairly ordinary. I go to work, I come home, I put my kids to bed. If I'm home in time for dinner, I have dinner and then it's bedtime."

Despite his apparently mundane existence, Steve wouldn't change his life in anyway. »

America's funniest man

21 August 2010 4:08 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He describes himself as a regular guy, but according to friends and fellow Frat Packers he's anything but. On the eve of his latest film, Dinner For Schmucks, Hollywood's most sought-after comedy actor wonders what all the fuss is about…

It doesn't matter how many drugs they take, or Malawian orphans they adopt, or arcane but fashionable religions they profess, Hollywood actors always claim to be "ordinary". Average. Just like you and me. Point a microphone at them and generally they can project, at will, an aura of perfect suburban normality.

But then, it's what they've been trained to do. Like beagles. Or those workers in Indian call centres who can recount the plot of EastEnders[/link] without having ever actually seen it. Leonardo DiCaprio, when I interviewed him, did not, for example, suggest he was about to go out on what the Daily Mirror called a "nine-hour booze bender" involving »

Steve Carell is dreading the day his children leave home. The "Despicable Me" star, who has daughter Elizabeth, nine, and Johnny, six, with wife Nancy Walls Carell, is already thinking ahead to the future and plans to cherish every moment with his kids until they grow up.

"They are at the perfect age. They just turned six and nine this last year, and I just want to freeze it," he explained. "I've done a couple of movies out of town and I hope I won't have to again, because to be home while your kids are little - you don't get that back."

"The other day, my daughter was over at a friend's house at a sleepover, and I walked by her door and she wasn't there... it kind of shakes up your world. Like, wow, not too many years from now, that's going to be the case. You need »

Steve Carell On the ‘Fine Line’ of Fatherhood

13 July 2010 1:00 PM, PDT | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

Pa Photos/Landov

On The Office actor Steve Carell portrays Michael Scott, a boss with serious boundary issues.

At home, the father-of-two admits he faces a similar struggle in the game of good cop vs. bad cop.

“I try to be a hybrid,” he tells Babble.

“You walk a fine line there. You want your kids to have respect; you don’t want to coddle them. You don’t want to be their buddy — but you do. You want to have that connection, but you also want them to respect you when you need to draw the line because kids need a sense of structure. »

Cheers to Her

2 June 2010 6:01 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Jane Lynch is not Sue Sylvester. Yes, this is tough to imagine, given how thoroughly she inhabits the towering inferno of a cheerleading coach on "Glee."In Sue, Lynch has created such a swaggering, barb-spouting, teenager-terrifying television icon, you half expect her to walk into a room proudly sporting one of the character's signature matchy-matchy sweatsuits.Yet, in person, Lynch is the polar opposite of her popular TV alter ego: affable, warm, and unfailingly modest. It's an attitude she has maintained throughout her decades as a recognizable character actor, bouncing from one scene-stealing turn to the next. After cracking audiences up with such standout supporting personas as Paula, the casually randy store manager in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," and Gayle, the inappropriate catch-phrase-spouting ex-druggie of "Role Models," Lynch is finally having her breakout star moment on "Glee." But her veteran-actor status hasn't dimmed her enthusiasm one bit; if anything, she seems »

For Date Night costars Tina Fey and Steve Carell, a night on the town has become increasingly rare since becoming parents.

A date night deficiency isn’t the only phenomenon the couples share, however!

“Sometimes you’ve had a long week and you have a date night planned and the babysitter comes and you envy her for…” Carell says, leading Fey to interject, “Settling in! »
