"America in Primetime" covers television tropes like The Independent Woman

1 November 2011 10:01 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

This past Sunday, PBS aired its first segment of a four-part series called America in Primetime, which is all about television — its history, its characters, its growth.

The first segment was "The Independent Woman," which was about the pressures that real women have faced, which translates into what female characters face. The entire episode is available to watch on the PBS website, so you can still watch it in its entirety. Interviewees include Julianna Margulies, Archie Panjabi, Elisabeth Moss, Patricia Heaton, Roseanne Barr, Diablo Cody, Mary Tyler Moore and many, many more. The discussions range from broader ideas about how women's roles have changed in the home and at work from the 1950s through present day, and wow, how times have changed. When you look back at how Lucy Ricardo was spanked by Ricky if she disobeyed him by trying to participate in show business and then compare it to »

Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius dish on Jackie and O'Hara's close friendship

1 August 2011 10:53 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

On Saturday at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Beverly Hills, Nurse Jackie creators Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius were present for a panel for the upcoming PBS documentary series America In Prime Time. The four-part series, which airs in October, looks at four different archetypes of television including "Man Of The House," "The Crusader," "The Misfit" and "The Independent Woman."

In the “Independent Woman” segment, Wallem and Brixius talk about how the television housewife has transformed from model housewives (think June Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver) to the complex and sometimes controversial women like Rosanne Barr in Roseanne, Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown and, of course, Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton in the Showtime series Nurse Jackie.

Post-panel, AfterEllen.com grabbed a few minutes with Wallem and Brixius to see if there was anything gay included in the documentary and, of course, if they had any »

TCA: 'Raymond' Creator Slams TNT For Axing Ray Romano's 'Men', 'Jackie' Ep Talks About Pitching To 'Roomful Of Fear'

30 July 2011 4:43 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline's TCA coverage. On a lively and colorful afternoon TCA panel promoting the fall PBS four-hour series America in Primetime, Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal blasted TNT for its recent decision to cancel Raymond star Ray Romano's latest series, dramedy Men of a Certain Age. "Those idiots put six episodes on in November and then waited until July to schedule the next six as if they were trying to make sure the audience didn't connect to it," Rosenthal said. "Then they cancel it because the audience doesn't connect to it. That's why I say the only thing I hate about this business is the business part." Rosenthal's zingers often punctuated the discussion, in which he, Nurse Jackie co-creators Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem, Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman and America in Primetime exec producer Tom Yellin delved into what makes primetime tick. 24 June 2011 11:36 AM, PDT | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

There are various cornerstones of a person’s childhood.  Be it singular moments such as the first day of school, or much broader entities like your first favorite album or the first time you see a movie in theaters, nothing quite impacts a child quite like the things that they do during their free time.

Some may spend it playing sports or practicing an instrument; others may be studying or reading.  One thing that everyone has in common are their favorite childhood cartoons.  And now, thanks to Shout! Factory, one of the ‘90s most interesting cult cartoon classics has just made its way onto DVD.

Shout has released the first season of the classic cartoon, Rocko’s Modern Life, and while the supplements may be nonexistent; the quality is more than there.

Rocko’s Modern Life began its run in 1993, and followed the story of a wallaby named Rocko, as »

Nurse Jackie Season 3: Expect More Drugs, Lies and Relationship Mishaps

28 March 2011 7:26 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Nurse Jackie Season 3 is officially here, and viewers have a lot to look forward to in the 12-episode season.

Season 3 picks up right on the same scene where Season 2 left off – Jackie (Edie Falco) staring into the bathroom mirror after Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best) and Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) confronted her for abusing drugs. As co-creator Linda Wallem stated, this season will not be the season of “Jackie goes to rehab.”

Instead, viewers can look forward to more drugs, lies and relationship mishaps. The 12 episodes will delve further into Jackie’s drug addiction, while simultaneously opening up the show to the supporting cast. We’ll see drug dealers of the past show up to stake their claim in Jackie’s downward spiral of a life. Yet, she still keeps All Saints working like clockwork.

TV Review: Edie Falco Returns to Emmy-Winning Role of ‘Nurse Jackie’

28 March 2011 8:59 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Showtime has a patented formula of hiring great stars (William H. Macy, Michael C. Hall, Toni Collette, Mary-Louise Parker) and building series around them. It has worked well enough that the last two Emmy winners for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series have been won by the network — Collette for the first season of “United States of Tara” and Edie Falco for the second season of “Nurse Jackie,” both of which return tonight, March 28th, 2011.

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

Like a nurse managing multiple patients with a variety of illnesses, Jackie Peyton (Falco) has spent many of her recent days trying to keep a house of cards from collapsing. It sure looked like that’s what happened at the end of season two after her husband Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) and her friend Eleanor (Eve Best) confronting Jackie about her disturbing pharmaceutical bills, ones that made clear that Jackie has a drug problem. »

Blu-Ray Review: Latest Seasons of Showtime’s ‘Nurse Jackie,’ ‘Weeds’

1 March 2011 12:00 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – One of Showtime’s former best comedies and one of their current best both saw a season land on Blu-ray in the last few weeks and we’re here to give you the details. Lionsgate owns the rights to “Nurse Jackie” and “Weeds,” two of the more acclaimed cable programs on the air right now. Sadly, the once-brilliant “Weeds” is a shadow of its former self, but “Nurse Jackie” continues to deliver.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Showtime has carved a cable niche by casting incredibly strong actors and actresses in lead roles and building programs around their characters — David Duchovny (“Californication”), William H. Macy (“Shameless”), Laura Linney (“The Big C”), Toni Collette (“The United States of Tara”), Michael C. Hall (“Dexter”). Two of their most successful results in this should-be-patented formula are “Nurse Jackie” and “Weeds,” built around award winners Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, respectively.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."

That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy

For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category. »

After an extremely messy, very public divorce from her wife, "Popular" star (and phenomenal Voguer) Tammy Lynn Michaels, rocker Melissa Etheridge has moved on to her longtime friend Linda Wallem, who, incidentally, was the "best man" in her wedding to Michaels. (Ouch.)

Aside from being besties for a decade, Etheride and Wallem, both 49, share a birthday - May 29, 1961. Sounds like they're star-crossed... unfortunately, Michaels may not agree.

Never one to sit quietly, Michaels made a very public, and very clear statement on her blog on January 18. Though People claimed the couple hooked up three months after the divorce, Michaels »
