Jsyn’S Ten Favorite Special Makeup Effects Movies:

Hey gang,

Robg asked me to compile a list of a few of my favorite movies featuring some of the most jaw-dropping special makeup effects around. Please keep in mind that not all of these will be horror movies per se, but if you dig the craftsmanship of transformation through makeup, this list is a good place to start.

I am aware that I’m omitting some very important and well know work by some very important and well know makeup artists, but these are just some of my personal favorites that sparked my interest and influenced my pursuit of special makeup effects. There really are too many talented artists and great films to mention in one list, and I’ll try to cover as many as I can later in another list (or three).

Cronenberg double feature at UCLA

As part of its Melnitz Movie Series, UCLA is holding a free David Cronenberg double feature on Thursday, October 30 at the James Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall (on the campus at 102 East Melnitz Hall in Los Angeles; call 310-825-5761 for directions). Starting at 7:30 p.m., the show will consist of two of the Canadian visionary’s best from the 1980s, Videodrome (pictured) and The Fly. For both the uninitiated and Cronenberg cultists, this is an excellent chance to experience these two modern classics in 35mm on the big screen. Videodrome, starring James Woods and Blondie’s Deborah Harry, was ahead of its time in its depiction of pervasive and invasive violent entertainment; The Fly reworked the 1958 Vincent Price film into an Oscar-winning (for Chris Walas’ makeup FX) benchmark in modern horror. The free tickets (only one per person) will be available at the Melnitz box office an hour before showtime,
