16 Years Later, That Song From Donnie Darko Still Makes Me Want to Cry on a School Bus

  • BuzzSugar
Next to certain smells, nothing triggers my memory faster than a song. Like most people, I imagine, I'll find myself going about my day as normal when, all of a sudden, I hear it: a song that rips me out of present day and dumps me back in a memory I'd all but forgotten about, like some sort of audio time capsule. Hearing a certain Kate Nash song is a one-way ticket to the foot of my college boyfriend's bed, the spot where we broke up for the sixth time. One note of Carol King's "Where You Lead" and I'm in the passenger seat of my parents' rusted Honda while my mom spills Diet Coke all over the cream-colored leather. That same visceral sensation of memory rushes through me anytime I hear Gary Jules's "Mad World," which I keep running into because of Donnie Darko's 16th anniversary.

The Great British Bake Off 2017, episode five – as it happened

It’s pudding week! The proof of the pudding is in the eating, but also in the being sent home. Who triumphed?

9.18pm BST

Wowzer. That episode was quite tough watching at times. My loyalties feel as slippery as an unbaked steam pudding. In the end, a fair result: Sophie’s military precision earns her a trip up ze Treifel Tower, while James…I don’t think they’re ready for his jelly.

Stephen’s been slipping, hasn’t he. Would we now rank Sophie higher? She’s consistent, a quality sine qua non in bake off champions.

9.13pm BST

I love those Portugese pasteis de nata. Next episode, pastry week, looks buff. And Liam will still be with us! I hope you will too.

9.12pm BST

Hurrah!

But we lose...James, as suspected. Julia sobbing. ‘My time has come’ says James, like something out of A Tale of Two Cities.

Mariah’s World: stilettos and meme-friendly meltdowns

Between the stilettos, sofa soliloquies and meme-friendly meltdowns, Mariah Carey’s new fly-on-the-wall show is rewriting the rules of reality television

Related: Why I love… Mariah Carey

Queen of everything Mariah Carey is tottering her way on to reality TV in four-inch heels. But Mariah’s World is no bog-standard fly-on-the-wall affair – as the trailer promises, it’s an “eight-part event of global proportions”. Spoiler alert: this diva doesn’t do things by halves. With X Factor bereft after Honey G’s exit and Carol Vorderman braying on about her “bush cock” in I’m A Celebrity, escapist (or as the haters might call it, trash) telly needs an intervention. Make way, then, for the sedan chair hoisted by half-naked dancers. On it lies Mariah’s World, rewriting the rules of reality TV. Here’s how the one-woman show is revamping the genre…

Strictly Come Dancing 2015: Carol Vorderman backs 'brilliant' Carol Kirkwood

Strictly Come Dancing star Carol Kirkwood has received the backing of a former contestant - Carol Vorderman.

Vorderman took part in the show in 2004 and told the Daily Express that she loves watching her namesake.

"She's doing brilliantly, isn't she?" she said. "Also with Carol, she hasn't been trained in a stage school and is such a lovely lady. I think it's unfair that you have stage school graduates... there should be some handicap somewhere.

"You just can't compare! It's like having someone that has swum for their county and another who hasn't swum before and telling them to have a race."

And while Kirkwood hasn't quite managed to win over the judges yet, Vorderman added: "She's very gracious when it comes to criticism. She shouldn't be criticised though - people should be encouraged."

Kirkwood will be attempting to pick up high scores with her rumba to The Partridge Family

DVD Review: 'Grace of My Heart'

  • CineVue
★★☆☆☆ The 1960s were chock-full of fascinating musical figures, many of whom with larger-than-life tales to tell, yet director Allison Anders uses a fictitious counterpart (said to be loosely based on Carol King) as the basis of her follow up to failed anthology comedy, Four Rooms (1995). Now released on DVD for the first time, Grace of My Heart (1996) might have benefited from using a real-life template to inject a little more personality into what is an unremarkable, if well-meaning, pseudo-biopic.

The interior designer made the admission to Digital Spy at the Pride of Britain Awards in London last night (September 28).

"It's happening," Hoppen said of her role in the highly-anticipated movie. "But my lips are zipped for a while. So you'll have to wait and see!"

It's not known what role Hoppen will take on, but she was mentioned in the 2004 special when Jennifer Saunders's Edina Monsoon admits that Bettina - her much-mentioned fellow interior designer friend - had been admitted to Broadmoor Hospital for "stabbing Kelly Hoppen with a glass shard at the Design Awards".

Joanna Lumley, who will reprise her role as the beehive-sporting, chain-smoking Patsy Stone, ended months of speculation earlier this year by revealing that the script for the film is done and production will kick off in October.

Two hours before Cilla Black’s coffin arrived at St Mary’s church, the streets of Woolton started to swell. There were pensioners making a day of it with flasks and biscuits; shop assistants in tabards; workmen in hard hats and high-viz jackets; wheelchairs, pushchairs and 71-year-old Tony Biggs, who had come in his leathers all the way from Stoke on his Suzuki Intruder because “Cilla was one of the lads”.

Jane Richardson had come from Huddersfield in her best dress. “I like going to celebrity funerals – I’ve been to Reggie Kray, Princess Diana,” said the 49-year-old. “But I did like Cilla. She was a good northern lass.” Val Fawcett, 71, was in her Tesco uniform with her daughter, Angela. “It feels like the end of an era,” said Fawcett. “We
